Why does hair stay the same length?

If you need a touch up
your hair is growing

If you need to retwist your locs
your hair is growing

If its time to rebraid your weave
your hair is growing

All the time
your hair is growing.

some people can grow an inch in two months
some can grow an inch in two years (I find this very hard to belive though if they are getting touch ups every six weeks but what do I know?)

I think honesty is the key here. Honesty with ourselves and with our friends.
I repeat, if you have to get a touch up because you have 1/4 inch of unruly newgrowth that means that you have been blessed with an extra 1/4 inch of hair--from the top
but if you fail to take care of the 1/4 inch on the bottom  your hair will apppear to stay the same lenght! wow! Its that simple.

its a fact--protective styles work. Maybe those who put their hair in protective styles aren't being so protecive in other areas. Retaining length is about total hair care.
It really doesnt matter if you wear your hair in a bun or wrap or anyother protective style if you flat iron it every other day or if you use harsh shampoo or are too tired to tie your hair up at night.
As for the growth rest shed cycle, if every hair was on the same growth cycle, youd be bald for some months.

The factors that affect length retention are simple---less heat, less harsh treatment, total tlc

The factors that affect growth are more complex---genetic, diet, individual cycles, seasons (hair is said to grow faster in the summer)

to retain length and gain length requires the blending of those two factors.

I'm in total agreement with you.

My hair is 4b and I never had a problem growing my hair. My hair isnt the fastest growing hair around, but I retain almost all of what I grow which is what makes all the difference. I know people whose hair grows way faster than mine but it's always breaking off from damage or rough handling. Even when I had a relaxer I was able to achieve a nice length. I just think that some people want to do everything to their hair -- treat it rough, always apply heat, touch up every 4 weeks like clockwork, never wear protective styles -- and still expect it to grow.

At the same time some peoples hair is very fragile and it's just not going to grow very fast. I'm saying all that to say that in most cases no one should have a problem growing their hair. It's growing all the time on it's own. -- jainygirl

I believe there are several factors that contribute to how long you can get your hair. Good care is essential to retaining length but even with the best care not everyone can grow hair to the the brastrap and beyond. Hair grows in cyles of 2 to 7 years based on genetics and and somewhere between 1/4in to 1in per month in most people. So somebody who has a higher growth rate coupled with a longer growth phase is going to be able to grow longer hair than somebody who grows 1/4" per month for 2 years before the hair is shed naturally. Most of us fall somewhere inbetween the extremes so it would seem reasonable that you could grow at least 12 inches of hair before natural shedding causes wispy ends.
Personally, my yearly growth rate has slowed down as my hair has gotten longer and I'm still not sure how much of that is from natural shedding and how much could be from breakage. But all my life my hair has grown like wildfire to a certain point then seemed to stop gaining length all of a sudden. Since my hair care regimen remains the same I can only assume that I've reached the end of my growth cycle and my hair is shedding. For me that is about 3 to 4 years.

Very well said. I agree with you.
