What is the hair situation in your city?

From STL:

A mix of everything and most of it isn't good.

Tons and tons of braids, especially micros. A lot of dredlock extensions on the fellas and they look rather ugly. Most of the loc'd ladies are natural and they keep their stuff together.

I think there are more naturals here than we know but most of them keep their hair braided. Warmer weather can be quite refreshing because that's when I see the most extension/weave/wig free naturals. You'll see a few twa's on the ladies and they do them extremely well. A twa is one of most amazing styles a woman can wear if you have the confidence to wear it  .

Bss here are making a major mint from the sale of hair and bonding glue.

When the summer hits, ladies lose their freakin' minds with crazy colored hairstyles. It's almost like they're spraying their hair with cans of spray paint. I'm talking about unbelievably tacky hair. Even more pathetic is most of these freaks are the first ones to complain about not being able to find a decent job. Heck I wouldn't hire you either if you looked like something from The Fifth Element movie.

Maybe she's going through chemo and experiencing hair loss? No one knows what any one's going through.

The Question mark..Question mark dot dot dot..( ? ? ...) lookin ones where ujust have to wonder if she should just trim or go bald...and how on earth did her hair line get so far back ..lets not forget the loud bright hair colors, matchin weave and clothes... ladies..Oh it's a bit of everything down in the 7citites..

I'm seeing more of a variety in Chicago, at least outside of Da 'Hood. A lot more naturals than than were back in the day, a lot more healthy relaxed heads, quite a few past SL actually, a lot of clip-on ponytails and phony buns. Da 'Hood is still looking crazy, on the other hand. :look:
yep yep...but don't forget still the number one style...micro braids holding on to disappearing edges. But there are LOTS of phony ponies and buns!

Hopefully all of this "unknown" protective styling will get some of these ladies to realize that they may be on to something...

You are right:yep:.

but her roots where thick and curly/kinky!!! with all these terrible straight pieces, some short, some even shorter! she looked like she could have rocked a full, thick fro!! but noooooo, some of these women still want to hold on to the relaxed strings in the back. i dont get it.

Well, I'm transitioning, so I can't talk, lol! But, I hear what you are saying.

I'm out in the country here in GA...and really, most ladies I see seem to not care at all about their hair..it's usually torn up no matter what the length.:pullhair: Not even tryin' to hide it w/ a weave:look: Just old-fashioned "i-have-no-one-to-impress-so-git-outta-my way...."

The other day I saw a little girl (maybe 3-4 yrs old) with her 4" hair sticking straight up w/ bald patches (from an over-processed relaxed job:nono:)
The sight broke my heart, & I say all this to say that it isn't only the grown women with hair issues...it's startin' young...:wallbash:

I'm in the midwest. I can count on two hands the amount of obviously natural heads I have seen, not counting my two sisters and my mom. I have seen probably two twa's.

Most of the ladies around here wear roller sets in a style they call "roller wraps." I don't care for it,but i guess it allows them to retain length, because I see a lot of women with below shoulder, apl to bsl hair. I do see a lot of thin ends too though. The struggle buns,as *E* calls them:lachen:,are plentiful too though. As well as are bad, tacky extensions. I would say there is a mix of everything except naturals around here. My natural hair is definitely a head turner.Negative or positive,I don't know, but i'm in the vast minority.

actually YOU CAN TALK  becuase i could surely tell that she was no cousin of niko! im sure yours looks nothing like her's, after all you are my cousin:grin:. she was just another IRL sista that thinks her see through relaxed ends looked good, i guess.

:rolleyes:i really wish all black women were familiar with this website.

haha too funny but true! :lachen:

In Atlanta, we've got the whole spectrum from very beautiful heads of natural and relaxed heads to fabulous weaves to horrible weaves/wigs, to chewed up hair!

I am in the DC , MD, VA area. I would vote for a mix lots of naturals like my self. Very cool styles they have too! I can't help but stare. There are also though many bad bad wigs and weaves. Often on the bus if someone sits in front of me with something on their head that just is not right I stare a tad , look away and stare again.

Reporting from Oakland, CA

Nice mix of everything. Relaxed, naturals, braids, weaves are found here though I'm noticing an increasing number of weaves especially among teenagers. As for hair length, those who don't wear weaves I see all lengths but not many past SL though.

Austin, TX.
At my job, lots of beautiful black hair. The longest I've seen is almost waistlength relaxed (I suspected that she was a cousin but she could not even tell me what hair products or techniques she uses when I asked since she wears her hair down everyday and has gone from APL to an inch to waist in 1 year). I've seen midback length on a straightened natural and healthy, scrumptious fros. Lots of ladies are APL. (This is my goal and I am one of the few (blk) that does not wear my hair out because of PSing).
There is a guy at the job with APL dreadlocks, juicy, thick and healthy. I wanted to ask if I could take a pic but was worried he may think I was a (hair) stalker.
Have seen weaves and braids here and there in the city but also long hair with ends hanging on for dear life (at Big Lots this week).
Sometimes when I wear braids to work and people think it is my real hair since most of the black ladies have long hair. Then when I wore a short wig post braids, they thought I had cut my hair. I choose not to say anything different.

Ladies and gents in dred..some are nice and some a hot mess.
Also, a lot of lace fronts with hairlines that resemble the characters from the Planet of the Apes.

Here in Montreal it's nothing but pure weaves or wigs. Very rarely do you see a woman with well kept hair past SL. Kinda sad really .... :ohwell:

Former Home: Houston, TX

Home of the Wigs, Weaves, and Super-Duper-I-can-see-your-scalp relaxers. To find a natural you have to search for one. To find a healthy relaxed head.....their in like Sugarland, Mo City, or Stafford.

:ohwell:

I live in Chicago, IL (Far west subs)

Short relaxed heads (semi healthy)

alot more natural heads (or women with curly weaves)

My

Houston has some ladies rockin gorgeous natural hair dos. The relaxed heads are probably half healthy half unhealthy no matter the length. I'm not good a spotting a good weave mostly bc its a good weaves but the weaves I can spot a mile away look plastic, matted, tracks showing, and non matching textures. I live in the burbs and don't mind driving into town but I have yet to find a stylist I really like in houston.

You might as well retire your search because you won't find one. Believe me, they lie. Most will tell you that their clientele is "full" or that yes, they can do the style you would like but when you get there...they do what THEY want to do on your head. I don't believe the client list is full tale because one woman I called to get my hair done told me that straight up when I asked her. I waited like 2 hours to call back but this time I made sure to sound like I have been knowing her my whole life. "Hey girl what are u doing, can u do my hair tomorrow?" Her response..."Oh is this so and so yeah girl come on I put you in first". I just hung up and said wow.

Reporting from Kingston, Jamaica. It's bad, really bad. Edgeless wonders and thin ends abound.

I visit JA regularly (St Elizabeth) and i see alot of lush heads of hair. I put it down to the soft water and the sun.
They also love to rollerset and love going to the salon.

My parents moved there 3 years ago and Mum's hair is past APL and natural. My Dad had hairs sprouting where he is bald.

philly:

ravished hair lines, fried, over processed relaxed hair and mounted on top are either extensions, weaves, wigs, sew-ins, glue-ins and chew-ins, ....the women and children...it's terribly depressing...

I'm waiting until I have something GOOD to say about the majority of hair I see in NE Ohio...I hope LHCF is still around when that happens.

Well it depends on what side of the city you are on.

There is a lace front side, where every woman looks like a half moon around the hairline.
Then you have the " I paid money for this weave, I'm never letting it go."
Then you have stringy wet hair with no style
Then you just have the plain old puck it section. They put a bonnet on the head and call it a day. These individuals always see crime happen and are given the opportunity to tell us about it on the evening news.

Seeing several women in one day with pretty moisturized, shiny, bouncy hair is like finding a leprechaun throwing gold coins in the Mississippi River.

You made me laugh out loud at work.....:lachen::lachen::lachen:

Here in the bay area (In San Jose at least) it's rare for me to see anyone with straightened hair anymore. MANY MANY naturals and if they are not natural they are maybe texlaxed?

the half moon hairline, LMAO. that is hysterical and so true!! you should do comedy!

In Richmond you have a lot of everything.

Lacefronts that look worse than wigs. There is no hairline left out it looks a hot shiny mess.
Weaves with unnatural colors ie blue streaks.
Chewed up NL relaxed hair that looks weighed down by grease.
Ghetto styles that include finger waves on one side and thick flat twists going into a ponytail thats on the side. I see this style a lot and don't know what to call it except for a hot ghetto mess.
There are A Lot of naturals in the area and some have healthy hair and some walk around like anything goes...
:orders: PSA- Just because you decide to go natural doesn't mean you dont have to do your hair anymore. This is coming from a natural. Just because you are relaxed doesn't mean you can neglect your hair either.
