What is the hair situation in your city?

Heyy everyone, Lurking newbie here . So since joining, I've paid more attention to hair, and I realized that the hair situation in my city, NY, is actually not bad. I see a lot of people with hair past shoulder length and some armpit lengths - beyond, nice looking natural heads, and maybe the chewed up look twice a day when commuting. But then again, I'm bad at identifying weaves. But yeah, what is the hair situation in your city?

Not trying to hate but its black girls clinging to sketchy weave and white girls with dry, over processed, heat abused, straw-like APL do's in RVA. smh

I don't see very many black women on a day to day basis but when I do their hair looks nice. Lots of relaxed hair at varying lengths. Lots of weaves. A few naturals with twists, chunky fros or maybe it was a type 4 wash no go not sure. A few with damaged looking hair. The one lady I used to see regularly with damaged looking hair went and got 5 lbs of weave on her head. She went from ear length with thin looking ends to hair down to her waist. It looked nice. Obvious but nice.

I have seen some great looking heads of hair too. Nicely styled and healthy of varying lengths. Also, I have seen a few BSL+ lengths that appeared to be real and not weavealicious.

In Detroit, it's mixed reviews. You have your weave heads that get it whipped up by a bangin stylist and then you have the girls who don't do jack to they heads at all. Split ends, uneven hairlines, broke off edges, and dry damaged hair. When it rains it pours here, so there is usually no inbetween. Either your hair is cute or its jacked up.

I'm in Atlanta, GA. There's a lot of variety here... lots of naturals, relaxed, good weaves, bad weaves, tapered twa's and even women rocking bald heads:grouphug3:... it's a hair melting pot.

Paris:
A lot of young Black girls with horrible weaves; a few nice braided styles, an increasing number of natural heads. Most BW have relaxed hair, it is nice sometimes.

As for the white women, usually the hair is natural (or looks like it ) and just brushed, healthy. On the other hand, you also have dry bleached hair with 3cms of black roots, other girls with multicolored tracks and what not.

Arab girls: either natural and curly or blow dried to death.

You can see many different styles, and various states of health.

That's cool! I wasn't expecting that. My friends from the South often remark how going natural is taboo and you're more likely to relax your hair, so it's nice to hear something different.

Northern Jersey = The girls and women go for the over processed relax hair + a good pound of weave. But! I've seen some beautiful locs on men and women around here too. Rarely see a loose natural like me, though

:lachen:That always cracks me up!

Anywho, in Wisconsin I see a little variety of styles.....where I'm from (back home) around Pittsburgh it's awful. Lots of slicked back ONY tails....ponytails so small the P won't fit with missing edges.

I'm seeing more of a variety in Chicago, at least outside of Da 'Hood. A lot more naturals than than were back in the day, a lot more healthy relaxed heads, quite a few past SL actually, a lot of clip-on ponytails and phony buns. Da 'Hood is still looking crazy, on the other hand. :look:

Reporting from Jacksonville, FL and my view may be skewed because I work on a college campus, but a lot of the young black girls have APL and BSL hair. Not sure if it's heat trained or relaxed, but it looks good. Again, I work on a college campus so most of these people probably aren't from Jax.

Outside of work, it depends on what side of town I'm on. If I'm on the North side, I see a lot of weaves, so not really sure what the hair underneath looks like. On the Southside I see a lot of beautiful naturals and relaxed SL and APL lengths (not so healthy, not so unhealthy). At the beaches where I live, I don't see many black people at all, but I do see a lot of bleached-blonde whites with SL or NL hair (no offense). The white brunettes usually have APL+ hair in all areas of town (can you tell that I'm REALLY observant of women's hair?).

ETA: The only time I see chewed up relaxed ends is when I go in the Asian-owned black hair stores. Go figure!

In lower Alabama, we got ate up edges and lace fronts with a little too much baby hair. A lot of chewed up relaxed hair and too tight braids.

But there are sprinklings of lovely natural puffs and well cared for relaxed hair. It's a mixed bag really.

Pittsburgh: A lot of weaves. A LOT of weaves. Lace fronts are slowly catching on, although synthetic wigs are used.

Now I'm starting to see some women sport the Willow Smith look- shaved on the side with a design and the other side long and combed to the other side. It looks a super hot mess if you don't keep up with it.

It's rare to see a Black woman with natural hair. My guestimate is that they make up 5% of the naturals I see around here.

Well it depends on what side of the city you are on.

There is a lace front side, where every woman looks like a half moon around the hairline.
Then you have the " I paid money for this weave, I'm never letting it go."
Then you have stringy wet hair with no style
Then you just have the plain old puck it section. They put a bonnet on the head and call it a day. These individuals always see crime happen and are given the opportunity to tell us about it on the evening news.

Seeing several women in one day with pretty moisturized, shiny, bouncy hair is like finding a leprechaun throwing gold coins in the Mississippi River.

I'm in northern va (fairfax county) most of the young black adults have jacked up hair weaves and chewed up edges! Sometimes I'll run into a few heathly heads but none really longer than full shoulder length. Now if you have around the college then you see the good the bad and the ugly!

Northside chicago - quite a few naturals. Some with no edges (lost a war with braids?), some gawjus.

Downtown - pretty weave, bad quickweaves, BAM look at that HAIR *must be a lhcfer! cuzz?!?* :thud:

South burbs - woo thatsa lotta weave.. and woo that is jacked up, i saw one natural once :look:

quite the variety. I'm all over the city during the week

hey:) i'm a new yorker too. i feel like it depends on where you go. in low-income neighborhoods, it's pretty bad (in terms of black hair care) and in some of the "artsy" areas, some of the white girls have some damaged hair from dye jobs but otherwise yeah, it's pretty good here

Lots of ladies in Houston rocking gorgeous natural hair dos. The good weaves I can't tell are weaves so I can only pick out the bad ones and they are bad. Plastic looking, matted, comepletely different texture that the rest of the hair, see through edges, etc. I see a mixture of healthy and not so healthy relaxed hair whatever the length.

In North London. It's mostly a mix of weave and braid extensions with different colours. A few girls have the short, shaved sides cut. Most of the older african women have no edges and the sticky uppy relaxed freshly relaxed hair.
Occasionally I'll see some longish (apl) relaxed hair,
Haven't really seen any loose(4 type) naturals with long hair. But on the bus today I saw a lady with taillbone length dreads, and her hair was in a highish pony tail. Never really seen that before unless it was a white person with dreads.
Loads of the older carribean women have their texturisers.

Reporting from NYC (Bronx) - Here's there's an interesting mix, because you can really see it all. There are definitely tons of bad weaves and bad lacefronts, but then there are some good ones too. Like my co-worker, who has an MBL weave. It may have looked okay a long long time ago, but now it's tattered, you can see she has no edges, and she doesn't even bother to blend her hair anymore. But then I was on the train the other day and this lady with flawless BSL hair was in front of me. I thought it was real until she tilted her head and showed her closure. If I wore weave, I'd have asked her where she gets her hair done.

Also there are lots of chewed up relaxed heads....see-through ends, dry hair, broken off bits, no edges, no napes, hair looking dull and ashy. But at least three times a day, I see gorgeous relaxed heads...they usually have about APL hair, and it's soft looking, shiny, and flowy. Another one of my co-workers is like that...I'm getting up the courage to ask her if she's a cousin. It's also very common for a relaxed lady to be rocking a fierce short haircut.

Finally, I have noticed quite a few more naturals too and even some ladies that I think are transitioning, because they have a ton of new growth. Some of them are rocking juicy and soft-looking braidouts, twistouts and puffs. But just as many have gelled their hair within an inch of its life and/or look like they need some Care Free Curl.

I do notice that I see more and prettier natural heads when I go to Manhattan and Brooklyn than I do here.

I second that :) Alot of diff hair types and styles, some of my friends in high school were BSL ish, very thick healthy, relaxed though. One thing I will say is that where I live particular, I haven't seen too many naturals.

When i ride the train or use the bus, walk around or whatever.. I notice women really don't take that great care of their hair regardless of race. (NYC)

La-La Land:

Weaves, weaves, weaves! Shellacked gel to flattened bad edges and "baby hairs".

Once in a while, you will see a natural getting their hair pressed, sporting cute braidouts/twistouts or a twa.
