To answer this question, take this test: http://bellaonline.com/articles/art5877.asp

Here's my results:
1. Porosity Test----failed
2. Elasticity Test---failed

Back to the drawing board

I didn't exactly take the porosity test but I've always noticed that my strands don't feel smooth. They feel as if they have ridges in some places. So I didn't even bother with that and assumed I failed that.

As far as the elasticity is concerned, my hair almost always if not always snaps when I try to do that test. I

I just attribute it to being relaxed. Is it possible to pass these tests with relaxed hair?

At any rate, I don't think I care anyway--at least my hair LOOKS good...who cares if it isn't really healthy? I don't think no one else really knows.

I think that test is flawed for the porosity test. I thought the cuticle is layered in one direction and will feel rough if you move your fingers in the opposite direction.

My first thoughts were that at that microscopic level it would be close to impossible to feel that difference. However, this website seems to agree with you, so you could have a point.

I passed both tests but I was thinking if your hair has good elasticity, why would you REDUCE the amount of time you deep condition it, wouldn't you deep condition for the same amount of time so that your hair maintains that elasticity? 5-10 sounds like a short time. What do you guys think?

Why did I pull I hair out for this test and now I'm sitting here obsessing over that itty bitty hair because I want it back?

You shoulda done what I did: test it while still firmly attached to your head.

porosity: good
elasticity: good

i never deep condition though. i wonder if it's because of the all the moisture that i give my hair? do you guys think that moisturizing products can make up for not deep conditioning?

Yes. The authors are assuming that the reader is not washing/rinsing/moisturizing their hair daily like most of us here at LHCF. If we only washed our hair once a week with no type of moisturizing in between, then we would definitely need to deep condition every week.

My porosity is ok, but not good. I failed the elasticity test though. My hair breaks really easily. I didn't even have to take that test.

I'm working on that though.

Hmm, I'm not sure but I think I failed but maybe I passed??

1. Porosity - My hair felt smooth in one direction and more rough in the other, think I failed that one.
2. My hair stretched but then I went too far and asked myself how far I could stretch it before breaking and then it broke. So, does that mean I failed? Eventually, it WOULD break, right?

I've got some conditioning to do!

Hairlove, you are right eventually the hair does break. It is only supposed to stretch a certain percentage. I think like 35-45%. If it stretched well and then broke I think you passed that test. It's like pulling a piece of thread, it is strong but if you pull long enough it will break!

Hairlove...

I had the exact same questions...aren't "feeling smooth" and how much you stretch the hair relative/subjective concepts? Cuz how far do you stretch? And how smooth is smooth - are we talking not a chink whatsoever in the armor? And what if basically smooth to me is rough to them? Or vice versa...?

I always do this to myself. Overthink EVERYTHING!

Hairlove,

same here.

*My hair felt rougher in one direction. But it's my understanding (as mentioned above by Champagne Wishes) that since the cuticle layers lay down in one direction that it will be smoother in that direction. Even a stylist told me that the hair will feel different moving up the strand than down the strand.

*Elasticity test--The hair stretched pretty well, but eventually it did break.

They didn't mention protein. I would think that protein would help with the elasticity test.

I understand you, really I do!

Hi all,

I'm very amazed at my results

(IF the test is accurate of course). My porosity was good and my elasticity was good. However I am still getting split ends. I think it's time for me to do another search on how to prevent splits.

Because I failed both tests, I use that as an excuse to go spend $51 @Ulta:

Nexxus Ensure Acidifying Cond & Detangler
Kenra Moisturizing Shampoo
Kenra Moisturizing Cond.
Kenra Intensive Emollient Treatment

For some reason I stopped doing my pre-shampoo oil treatment, I'm starting that again.

I just used Aubrey's GPB yesterday and when I took the tests I got Good on both. I actually do the elasticity test every once in a while anyway because it helps me determine how well a certain new conditioner or moisturizer is working and lets me know when I really need to deep condition. I've never done the porosity one before but my hair felt the same in both directions. GPB is fairly acidic if my memory serves me so I bet that has something to do with it.
