What have you realized since being on LHCF?

My hair sheds A LOT in summer

I have learned my hair type is thin and fine, I learned too much protein will damage my hair, I learned to educate myself and do research on all product before putting in my hair. I learned what is best for someone else hair may not be good for mine. I learned not to run out and buy all product.

I learned to just let my hair be and to stop demanding it handle according to my expectations. I have to handle it according to its needs, which are ever-changing. The grow-out phase isn't really that taxing, it was just in my mind and I was making excuses to cut it, over and over again, like an addiction. 3 years to reach full waistlength? Good, then by the time it's fully there, the rest'll be to my knees. I can handle that. No cutting. Absolutely none. My hair is a prayer.

I am still new here, but I have learned so much!!!

-Co-washing is the best ever! I do it three times a week.
-SLS was the culprit on my stripped hair.
-Glycerin, shea butter, mango butter, and vitamin e oil is all i need.
-I am 18 weeks post and I never thought I could get here.
-I have used heat three times in five months. I used get a blowdry AND flat iron weekly. No wonder my hair was snapping off!
-Stop wearing my hair down all the time!!

Recently- to stop giving hair advise to those outside LHCF - even if they ask because they will often not take it because -


many are too lazy to put the time into caring for their hair

some expect a miracle product, one that will work overnight

or do not believe their hair is capable of growing or looking beautiful or being soft

etc etc

I realized that my hair CAN grow long

We don't "need" grease.

Heat is a no-go for my hair.

Moisture is the key.

Love this question. Being a newbie I have been doing everything wrong for years.
I've learned:
1) What co-washing is and that my hair loves it everyday.
2) DC often
3) Wash more frequent
4) no heat
5) Keep it simple, I was a PJ in the beginning however I had to find what worked for me.
6) stay out of the doobie shop
7) And best of all, to love my hair the way it was intended, natural and all mine. I used to hate my hair curly now I can't see relaxing maybe texlax but I'm retaining my growth and on my way to WL (even though I'm SL)

My new Reggie: Co-wash daily, DC overnight in plastic cap, Baggie and bun daily, use natural oils to moisturize, try new products sparingly( my PJ recovery plan), Grow my hair to new lengths to prove African American women can have long hair without weave, I do plan on using half wigs and phony ponies for summer protective styles. My sister seems to believe we are set on a certain length of hair and that's it, that began my hair journey to prove her wrong.

I do need to jump on every bandwagon that comes along...it's best to KISS!
Every product does not work for every hair type.
There is extreme value in protective styling.
Once you have a solid reggie...stick with it

1. To use heat protectant
2. Leave in Conditioner actually exists
3. The difference between moisture and protein conditioners
4. It's a good thing to use a heat protectant
5. To speak up for myself when others are not treating my hair tenderly
6. That I didn't know anything at all about hair
7. My hair hates hard protein
8. That I can't try EVERYTHING listed on this forum

I have learned that Brilliant and wonderful women are members here........

I have learned that most 'hair professionals' still give people terrible advice and service...that helps me when I think about not doing something myself.....

I have learned that when you find a Holy Grail.... Keep it! Bow down to it! and Love it!

I have learned a great deal of science behind the hype or practice...........

I have learned to understand when 'less is more'...

I have learned how to tell a great story with Smilies.....
