What dries out your hair? And how do you fix it?

Prepoo with heat really dries out my hair. (I cut the heat)

I have Fekkai Protein Rx Anti-Breakage Treatment Mask and it smells delightful...but DRY!!! And since it wasn't cheap I still want to use it. I used it for 10 mins with baggie. I'm thinking about using it for like 3 mins instead. :perplexed

I use a moisturizer, etc. etc., but it's the next day when the dryness really happens. I'm trying to do the protein/moisture balance thing. :ohwell:

What are the worst drying culprits!?!

(so I'll know better next time! :look:)

cones! (simple little products like ntm silk touch leave-in will leave my hair like straw for the rest of the week.)

Henna and hardcore protein treatments (left in for longer than a few min).

Henna used to do good for me, but for some reason now my hair gets really dry. As a result I have not done it in a while.

Also, Aphogee and other hardcore treatments dry my hair. I don't care what anyone says, I can do a moisturizing deep condition afterwards, but my hair takes weeks of this to return to its normal balance. Even "mild" ones left in too long dry my hair out.

Believe it or not, some protein does help me get my moisture back. Light protein. I will use a mild mixture with pure marine collagen, pure wheat or soy protein and a nice natural oil and do a hot oil rinse with it followed by a moisturizing deep condition. But honestly, it takes my hair a few weeks to really get back to normal.

As a matter of fact, that is how I get my protein now. Just light rinses. You say that you want to do it for 3 min? That is pretty much how I get my protein now and it has been working for me. I am not going to bother with that hardcore stuff. I guess my hair just does not need that.

Setting lotions. Hair is straw the same day until I apply a moisturizer.

Coloring- I have a whole field of straw a week later

I also have to really watch the shampoos used by my hairdresser. I now will take my own products-Aubrey Organics.

true!

Since I went cone free my hair just does better all around. Well I do use a silicone based serum sparingly when using heat, but I stopped using them in my shampoos, moisturizers and conditioners. I can tell a difference. It helps too because I don't have to use as much shampoo, which I am sure helps, too.

For me, it's too much protein (I'm very protein sensitive). Excessive cones over time will dry my hair out, too. It usually requires clarifying for me to resolve it.

undiluted shampoo- I always dilute shampoo and prepoo
biosilk silk therapy serum- use in summer on skin
silicone sera- try not to use them if I do, keep moisturizing
setting lotions/foams--only will use them occasionally in summer
petroleum in deep conditioners-try to avoid
not chelating regularly-do it
liquid leave ins- moisturize like crazy until next wash, or rinse it out and start over, basically avoid them.

Wow! So much great info. Thanks ladies! Yeah, I am starting to believe my hair doesn't like protein all that much.
:violin:

I have also noticed that reconstructors really dry my hair out too.

I have never heard of pure marine collagen - where do you get it?

Cheap shampoos and conditoners :nono:---I have to use a good moisturizing shampoo, conditoner, and moisturizer for my hair to get back right....Thats Sauve, White Rain, Tresseme

Protien---My hair is really sensative to protien, the only ones so far that havent made my hair dry and tangly were Aphogee 2 min keratin, and the Green Tea & keratin, and Elasta Qp serum (but they dont stop breakage at all)
Eggs, Aphogee hard treatment, yougurt, Henna, ect. All leave my hair really dry

Motions products as well

Poduct overdose. Buildup of oils, leave ins and condish.

My fix is that I no longer use regular poo and I regularly wash with water and baking soda. I make sure I scrub the ends too. Hair has been more soft and fantastic than ever since I've been doing this.

Cones and oils, mostly. Henna, interestingly enough, doesn't - but then I put enough cheapie conditioner in my mix that it really shouldn't.

Not moisturizing regularly is usually my biggest culprit.

shampoos, lots of protein, gels, setting lotions, some oils,

i just dont use them, i stick with just using conditioner and that it.
