What changed your hair for the better? (Name one thing)

Going natural

I couldn't maintain relaxed hair, (Didn't know how to I spose) my relaxed hair was shoulder length and thick but so so damaged.

I have to repeat what a few others have said. Going natural. Relaxed hair works well for many but for me, I just experienced years of shedding, breakage and overprocessing. The beginning of the better for me was ending relaxing.

Quit obsessing over growth. I put my hair in a low mani style for a whole year so i can breath and stop obsessing over growth

These two go hand in hand so I count them as one:

Stretching my relaxers to 12 weeks while learning how to care for the two textures on my head. Once I got the hang of how to moisturize and manipulate my hair without snapping off tons of it, it took off and is now thriving! :yep:

activator gel. keeps my hair moisturized and supple (and tangle-free).

it's really a three-way tie, though. cowashing daily/shampooing often, wash-n-go's, and plenty of gel. even though there is a lot more, these three things have made a huge difference for my hair.

It's really hard to choose just one, but if I must, I'll say finger detangling. I have gone back and forth with detangling methods over the years, but I always return to finger detangling because it allows me to keep more hair on my head.

I definately believe for me it was eliminating using shampoos with sulfates in them. Its been almost 2 yrs since i have been using sulfate shampoos. At 48 yrs old my hair is longer than it was when i was 18 yrs old. Every time i see my mother she says "I have never seen your hair so long"

Protein! My hair was SO over-moisturized it wasn't even funny...I had never even heard of a protein conditioner/etc. I started using Joico K-Pak and my hair did a complete 180.

Co-washing!
My hair was a fried, dried, and highlighted mess before I discovered the magic that is co-washing!

......This is hard lol, but if i had to pick one its figuring out that I have fine strands, but alot of them.

I know that may seem crazy, but I always figured I had thick coarse hair, when in reality I have fine dense hair . Tangles are now a thing of the past :).
EnExitStageLeft how did finding out you had fine hair change or affect your regiment?

tomnikids3 what shampoo do you use?

As for me, low manipulation has been the single best thing that has helped my hair to grow and remain healthy. The more I do to my hair, the more it hates me.

I stop treating my hair like it was made of steel and started treating it like the delicate lace it resembles. I also did my research and found out finer strands are prone to damage which lead me figuring out I had EXTREME heat damage. Which then lead me to learning about the hairs porosity and the different levels. Which has definitely been a game changer. However, without finding out my strand size I would have probably never learned any of this.

Using a small amount of castor oil on damp hair. It makes a huge difference with my retention. Even though my hair is fine. :yep:

Verifen Complex Hair Line Products

I really want to revisit these products to see if they work as well now that I'm natural. I loved the Hairline Essential Cream, the oil, and the product for the ends when I was relaxed.

Henna changed my hair for the better. At first I didn't think I was going to like the fact that my curls were elongating. but now it really is giving me what I was looking for all these yrs that I kept trying dry curls. now I don't have to worry about using a chemical on my hair and my curls are permanently elongated and I have gorgeous color. with making sure I use the best henna my hair has shine and bounce with the very best curls.

Creating a goal!!!!
I found a picture of my goal/ hair inspiration and it's on my vision board. Seeing it daily reminds me I must moisturize, deep condition, protective style, stretch relaxers, etc...in order to reach my goal.....it's working

EnExitStageLeft Thanks for your response. Ok last question. How did you find out your hair had fine strands? I really would like to find out if my strands are thick or fine.

Deep conditioning. It didn't matter if it was mayonnaise or a salon quality product, that is something that will always stay in my regimen.

Detangling, then washing hair in medium braids -- changed my hair care life. No more long wash days trying to comb through tangles. Less time in the shower, low manipulation.

I simply took my strand and put it against a white sheet of paper, I could hardly see it without squinting, so I knew then it was fine. I also read around about the different types of hair and how they behaved. Fine strands tangle up quite a bit, prone to breakage and LOVE some protein. After I learn this it solidified my findings with the sheet test. My strands are def. fine.

Greenhouse Effect HANDS DOWN....

This is the only thing that helps with my moisture problems when my hair is natural. Everything else I do just builds off of this.
