What Are You Paying?

Dominican Salon:
Wash, condition, deep condition, Dominican Blowout (blow dry and flat iron) = $50 add $5 for trim + $14-15 tip for stylist and shampoo girls = about $70 for natural hair.

When I use to color which was a custom color plus all the above it came out to $85 + $20 tip for the stylist and shampoo girls brings me to $105 total for color and blow out on natural hair.

I go to a salon in central NJ but I think I'm about to start flatironing my own hair and have my friend who just finish beauty school dust my ends.
 
I only go to the salon for my relaxer touch-up.
My stylist charge $60 for the relaxer/wash/dc/blow dry/flat iron and trim if needed. I usually give about $20 to $25 tip.
 
It came to me yesterday that I don't think I'm respected as a loyal client by my beauticitican. So I usually wear wigs but when I do wear my real hair I wear it in a puff that I just do myself.

So with the wigs..I have my stylist wash, condition and blow dry my hair. And then braid it in a beehive pattern. Total comes up to 57 with the tip included. I've been a faithful client since our college days (where she first started doing my hair) and she's never failed me so even tho that's pricy for the service I'm still a loyal client. and I kno this ain't college where she's doing my hair out of her apartment lol. She has booth rental fees now lol.

So yesterday she was super booked and only had one, one hour slot open at 8am. on styleseat. So I booked it and then washed conditioned and blow dried my own hair cuz I knew with my slot being only an hour I would put her behind schedule if she had to do all that with my hair. So I got there and all she did was braid it. Took about 40 minutes. Good timing and kept her on schedule for her 9 o'clock.

She still charged me the same price!!!!! So I was like girl all you had to do was braid it. I did everything else because I wanted to respect my one hour time slot and not put you behind. she was like I know...it's still 50 (or however much it was) so I was like girl I know u ain't serious. So she took like 8 dollars off.

So I paid 40 somethings dollars for her to simply braid my already washed and blow dried hair. I was upset. Especially cuz all I do is just put them wig on and keep it moving. So i don't care that much about the size and super neatness of them. And it's messed up because I have been a loyal and consistent client since college..so it's been almost 10 years of my business (minus 4 from when I moved to LA after we graduated lol).

I jonestly think its time to start looking around for a new person. Shoo..if I want someone to just braid my already washed and blow dried hair I could go down to Clark Atlanta, Spelman or Morehouse (oh the shade lolol) and pay a student 20 dollars. I just thought was rude of her.

There are some salons in NYC that will charge $50 to put in cornrows on clean hair, just to put on a wig afterward.
Not to say her price shouldn't have been lower since you normally get full service for $50.

I had a standing 20% discount at my old salon (used since I was a teenager). She even added it to the computer once she switched over to computerized appointments and billing.

Oh wow! But are these nice braids? Like to wear as a style? Or something that doesn't really have to be all that neat because I'm bout to put my wig on for the Next month and a half.

Interesting. That's crazy. But yeah. I have no problem paying that when she's doing everything. But since all she has to do this time was braid it up I was like uummm how much? Lol. I probably won't even end up going anywhere while I'm over here talking lololol. I just know for next time
 
Wash/deep condition/blowdry/flat iron = $35 at a Dominican salon I went to + $5 more for a trim. Loved the results! (I'm natural btw)

Silk press at a different salon + trim = $65. Pretty good results as well, but my results with the Dominican blowout was better and it lasted longer. I'm in NYC

I don't go to a salon regularly because I can do my own hair but when I do go it's more money than before but I haven't been to a salon since I got my Bob in 2012.
And I went to aveda hair school with a 20 off coupon and paid maybe 10 15 dollars.

$40 in tips because I give each stylist (my daughter and mine) and their assistants $10. Now that I think of it no wonder whenever we need to come they will move hell or high water to make sure we get in. it doesn't matter if there is a waiting list. I was there the last time and I asked for a price list for a friend. The girl was like well I don't know about this price list because we are moving to a new location. So I'm thinking the prices are going to change when they get the new location. I don't see that ending well for them because I pay a pretty penny for me and my daughter now. I would definitely have to find someone else.

Are you implying that $20 is a low or high tip for almost $200 worth of services? To me that seems kinda low, since 15-20% is customary for services.
 
Wait....So $20 is considered low even if you bill for services run you $200? I guess I didn't know how much you are supposed to tip. I'm thinking if you are already getting $200, an extra $20 is great!

I saw a recent survey that said 10% was the lowest while the high was 25% for hair care tips. Some people tip everyone separately (shampoo v. stylist).
20% is the average for personal care services which is odd to me since people balk at tipping 15% in restaurants to the people handling their food.

Yeah, I try and tip 20%.

I'm a Devachan person considering Dickey for my cut next time. The salon, not him. I like my colorist at Devachan.
 
Forgot to add, I pay about $18 + tip for a trim at Supercuts.
A lot of NYC salons charge $75 - $100 for a trim (and some do not include a shampoo/blowout).
