It depends...Certain cities are more intrigued women with natural hair. How it is styled really does not matter in some places. When I was natural, I would just get stares from men. Women seemed more interested in the idea of me being natural. It really depends on where you live...
I guess I live in the more shallow end of the pond.:perplexed

I think it depends on the person. There is girl at school who has SL natural hair. She is very happy, bubbly and an all around good person. I don't think people could see her as threatening. They may initially think she is that stereotype that you mentioned, but after talking to her, I know all of those preconceived sentiments will dispel.

I think it would be totally hilarious if someone could find me militant, or even bold. :lachen: Actually, I'd like it. I wish my afro did give me magical powers that made me more assertive. I think with or without a 'fro, I don't have the overall demeanor or presence to carry off militancy or boldness (unless you happen to press the wrong button). I'm working on that, though.

But there are men who like kinky hair. If you wear it, you attract them (lawd, just wish I had the social skills to know what to do once I do get their attention). I think how you feel about yourself also shows. If you feel more bad@$$ with "long swanging hair," as the term around here goes, that will show and your confidence will attract people. But if you feel glorious with your fab 'fro like I do, then that is what will show. Whether that gloriousness will be intimidating, well that's another question. To the weak, I suppose . . .

I agree with the bolded! :yep:

Where are these men? :look:

I'm not saying I don't agree with you, but I have yet to see a man who loves, or prefers, natural hair.

:yep::yep:

ITA, maybe it's a Cali thing, but men on the west side of things do not prefer the natural look; but when I'm out here on the east coast, I find that men (and women) love it...IMHO

If that's you in your avatar, I can see why. :yep:

@ the bolded, that's really good to hear :yep: I wish I can actually see this for myself (where I live) and hear this a lot more.

Yeah that's me. It just really compliments my facial features better.

I think it comes from where (some) natural ladies put ladies with relaxers down, calling them "permies" and insulting their usage of relaxers - "creamy crack"... it's fine to want to go natural, but you don't have put down the people that choose to do so. So they come off as bitter or militant and that's where that comes from. Luckily all natural haired women are not like this... thank the Lord.

I don't do this because you know what I hope I don't lose my natural card but some people look better with straight hair (relaxed and pressed) and they should keep on straightening it if they choose. It just seems to suit their style and facial features. If they decide to stop doing so for their health or whatever great but hey I really have seen some ladies who looked better with straighter hair.

ahem, pardon me ms lala but is that the twist version of an updo thread posted not long ago?

the pic is sooooooooo tiny but from what i can see, it looks beautiful!!!!

I am not natural but my mother is and has been since 1969. She always got the most attention from men and women when she would wear her hair out in a fro.

I think it boils down to looking good period. Just as you can style your relaxed hair to look better with your personal features, the same goes with being natural. I don't think men are extremely picky, I just think they are very visual. If it looks good it looks good, if it doesn't it doesn't. With that being said, healthy hair regardless of state, always looks better than unhealthy hair.

This is true. I've had a lot of my guy friends say they wish more women would just wear their own hair. They say they're tired of the bad weaves. Most of them aren't feeling short hair though. :ohwell: A woman has to be extra pretty if she has short hair before they'll approach them. I really think it's just a matter of if it looks good and compliments the person's features.

I would agree with this too. I think the northeast cities are more accepting. I see naturals here all the time. Same thing with NY and DC.

I'm in the Midwest, I know there are a few naturals here based on the gatherings I have arranged. Usually, I feel like I am the only natural here.

I think ppl view some women with afros as militant b/c some women with afros are, just as some ppl percieve women with natural hair as beautiful, non-confrontational women because that is what they are.
I have been through so many hair phases, and what I think it really boils down to is natrural attractiveness. I have had weaves, and attracted men. I've worn my hair short, like the pixi cut in my default, and attracted men. And finally, I'm wearing a TWA and I still attract men. I think physcial features and body type really play a large role in what hairstyle ppl can pull off.
I do agree with some posters though that the region of the country one lives in really plays a large role in perception of a hairstyle. I'm in Tallahassee, a college town, so ppl here are used to variety and women experimenting with different things with their hair. So here, as long as a woman is confident I think that seals the deal.

i agree with the ladies that say it's about confidence. i felt confident with 2 inches of hair and men flocked to me like there was no tomorrow. :lachen:

it comes down to what looks best on YOU, but also what you FEEL you looks best on you. me, i could care less so i almost always feel confident. (i'll admit at first when i BC'd i was a little self-conscious though... i'm not Superwoman... :look: )

actually i don't think of myself as militant at all. I also find that i get comments and compliments from guys and girls, especially black girls who reveal to me they've always wanted to cut their hair but their not in a place to do that now. good question to ask

I definitely got more attention when I had my boycut. But both my husband loves my new found length :drunk:

I've had compliments and sly remarks. I have never had anyone say anything stupid or mean, at least not to my face anyway.

Someone said "There goes Jill Scott" when I walked by. It didn't bother me at all, they were with some raggedy weaved up chick, trying to talk.:nono:

But, one time this white lady, she was older, came up to me all excited and was like "I am loving that style!" She was beaming from ear to ear, I have to admit I was shocked, but she was saying it was really pretty. I just had it in a fro with a clip in the front, I think.:look:

Thanks, it's just some big twists pulled into a bun.

I am from the Midwest. It is kind of a mixture here, also. I thought there was more weave, but no. There are natural haired gals, too. My cousin in law is verrrry pretty, and wears a natural. She just gets those men every time.:fishslap:
