Yeah, it's real. I can take most anything, but my mom winces if you comb through a small tangle.

Mi mother is very tenderheaded even if someone is washing her hair she starts yelling it hurts. I can have someone tear through mi head with a comb without detangling and it won't hurt at all. When I was transioning the middle of mi head was so tender to touch it would hurt but it's not like that anymore.
 
No I don't think it's a myth. I think the term, in some cases, is being used to cover up poor hair practices, but besides that I think it's very real. My mother is tender headed and it doesn't matter what you're doing or how gentle you're being with her hair. Her and I have very sensitive skin (I have eczema also) so it wouldn't come as a surprise if her scalp area is uber sensitive. Couple that with a very low tolerance for pain and that's tenderheadedness
 
Definitely, it's real. Scalps don't lie. But I'm sure the degree of pain could be minimized with better detangling techniques.
