I'm a well-preserved 37 and I have no limits on goal length. Although I never wanted super long hair anyway. During the relaxed days, I would get annoyed when it brushed my neck too much so I would just pull it up into some kind of updo.... So as it grows out and I can pull it up into a big, poofy BAponytail, it's all good to me.

Nah ah, you lying, you ain't no 37!!!

My husband use to say that older women with long hair look like witches. (His mother instill that in him). But now with me growing my hair out his friends are always saying how beautiful he says my hair is.

Wow! That is a gorgeous head of hair...

i12sitonmyhair, how do I post a link to this on my thread about 40+ women?

Well, I am 35, and I'm growing my hair to wiast length. Haven't you all gotten the memo? 30's are the new 20's, 50's are the new 30's....we aren't old! The key is how you carry yourself and wear clothing appropriate for your body type, etc. We gain class not age. I prefer a fuller hairstyle to the straighter styles. This is just my taste (although I will rock the straight look as well on occasion). As long as hair is healthy and not thinning in noticeable places, I think long hair should have no age limitations. Think of Lynn Whitfield, Dianne Carol (although she uses Botox and plastic surgery)....but you get the point!

Happy growing!!!

Tthreat, you are another one that's lying about her age! Girl, get outta here with that!

All of you all are some savy looking sistas!!!

I'm 35+ and age isn't going to stop me from reaching waist length!

OT: 2cute2B4gotten, I can't access your album. Could you update the password in your profile, please. Thanks. :)

Miss Tress,

I am so sorry. I do need to update my profile. In the meantime, the password is: n2itall.

There aren't very many pics...I need to update. I will try to add some more soon. The last one I took is my avatar.

So that means I'm only 26! :D

Over the past few years I've developed a love of wearing my hair in a ponytail, and recently, in a braided ponytail, like Sade. I actually prefer my hair in a ponytail to wearing it down. I just can't wait to have a BSL-MBL, poooofy afro-ponytail! Can't wait!

Not the age range yet...but I can't wait to be in my 40's, with long hair...I really want to be a sexy mama with long thick hair

i hesitated in posting in this thread because I have issues with age. I'm .....35 going to be 36 in a couple of weeks and think we can grow our hair long at any age.

I'm aiming for SL and then APL. I am partially at SL anyway just waiting on the top/front of my head to catch up.

Most folks think I'm 25 anyway until they see my kids!!!!

Dont' let that stop ya!!!

I'm 35+ and waist length hair is not a goal of mine however if it grows
that long. Great! I do think waist length hair styles for older women, I'm talking 60+ is quite boring. Most of the time it is in a bun or a long braid.
When you are in that age range the last thing you want to do is mess with your hair all day.

I saw this woman who was maybe in her late 50's. She had an absolutely beautiful salt & pepper mane!. Her skin was smooth and she really was gorgeous. I had to tell her how beautiful her AND her hair was. I think she'll forever be an inspiration as many of our mothers, aunties, sisters, etc. are.

What a gorgeous head of hair! The bun with the flower and the curly pony tail are especially luscious. You know I'll be bugging you for updates because your avatar shows your hair to be longer now. ;)

I'm 38 and length is not an issue for me. Grow on! My issue is the gray hair. I think it's beautiful, but I'm not ready for it. I tried, and failed.

I'll be 47 next month and my hair comfortably covers my brastrap (about 2-3 inches longer than the pic below). I haven't really decided how long I'll let my hair grow, but I think the length flatters my face. I love having the versatility that comes with long hair. I think it can age you when your face starts to sag. The hair just pulls it down further. But we black women so rarely have that happen. I think long hair can work for us at any age.

I totally agree! I've thought about this a couple of times, since I plan on growing my hair to waist length, and wondered if that would look "too young" on me (I'll be 37 the end of the year). We as black women do have the advantage that we age better, so to me, as long as the hair looks good, healthy, etc., length should not be an issue, regardless of age.

BTW, I had no idea there were so many women on here in my age group, that's great! There are times when I feel very old on this board amidst all the young, beautiful whipper snappers!

I'm ova 40 and I think confidence is the best look ever. So I will let the hair flow as long as I like and as long as it suits my face and lifestyle. I will add that some do cut their hair due to the night sweats that can acompany menopause. Perhaps I will put it on top off my head.Good protective style in any case.

I'm not 35+, but from what I've seen I don't think long hair on black women ages us the way it does on white women, jmo.

Me too. Nice to see us old (wait, young--30 is the new 20, remember) farts on the board. :D

I am 38 if someone wants waist lenght go for it. I do not desire hair that long APL will be good for me. We are like fine wine we just get better with time.

I have read that in the old days women always grew long hair and maintained it through old age, and that it was only in the "Flapper" times that women began to cut hair short.

IT was liberating to them to finally be able to both work and to cut their hair and wear pants if they wanted. Back then cutting the hair had nothing to do with age, but with liberation (and ease at their new found jobs).

I think the hairdressers keep older women dependant on salons and capitalize on them by telling them they have to keep hair short, and that it makes them look old.

To me nothing is more beautiful than an older woman with beautiful long silver hair in an elegant updo. I think it is feminine and beautiful.

Wow, you ladies have been reading my mind. I was wondering if I take all this time to grow my hair long, once I got 40, would I want to be bothered.

But I see I'm not alone.

Okay, Jazzy. I'm going to count on you to keep blogging and tell me how you're going to deal with having all that hair.;)

Girl, I’m a certified aerobics instructor at the age of “almost” 47. When I teach, I give those 20 somethings a run for their money. I took an aerobics class last night and a younger woman came up to me and said she was feeding off my energy. :) Thanks for the compliment.

The point about the Flapper days makes sense because of the sense of rebellion around the nation re. war, Prohibition, and then by the time the Great Depression hit, there was no money to maintain all that long hair! LOL! That's a good spin-off thread topic: during financial challenges, do you get more creative/innovative with hair care?
