For those of you who are mid to late thirties and growing waist length hair, what are your thoughts on aging and hair length? I have been thinking about this lately and just wondered what everyone else thinks? Does anyone here feel that they are just too old for waist length hair? And if so, why?

Girl go for it, I am 37 Praise God and I am trying to grow my hair at least to APL. If you want waist then go for it. I know someone who is in her early 40's and she has BSL. Do what you are comformable with.

Maybe it’s just me but I think an AA woman with long hair shows she is accomplished and she knows how to care for herself.

Our counter part have very little issues with hair. We on the other hand have to strive for it; it just does not come naturally for all of us (especially 4B like me).

Time and great effort is put forth and that is why I feel an AA woman with waistlength hair is an accomplished woman!

By the way I am 38 and going for WL!

My goal is to grow my hair as long as I can... I wore the short and sassy styles in my mid-twenties until now. I don't think waist length is too long for the (older) :look: lady. :)

Well I just made 39!!, and I want to see just how long my hair will grow. I usually keep it braided and it grows pretty fast.

I also don't feel that it is as much of an issue in our community. We don't age as quickly, therefore, no one can ever really tell how old we actually are. I feel that a person should be able to wear their hair however they please...whether it be long, short, kinky or straight - no matter what age you are.

Any other thoughts?

I am 35+, at BSL and planning on growing my hair very long. :) I love seeing women my age and older with long hair. I plan on living to a ripe old age, with a very long braid down my back.

I am 37 and I too just want to see how long my hair will grow, I am not aiming for WL, but if it gets there its all good!!

I have a 65 year young aunt who sports BSL, bleached/very light sandy brown, relaxed, thick 4b hair and has done so for years. She looks very classy and she has her hair styled weekly - updo's, long spiral curls, pin curls, you name it! She is such an inspiration. She treats her hair like gold and proclaims it to be her crowning glory. I don't think having long hair should be exclusive to "youngsters", however, I do think as you get older, styling your hair in a way that is appropriate for your stage in life is important. I'm 38 and I plan on growing my hair to BSL as long as I have no health issues (God forbid).

I'm a well-preserved 37 and I have no limits on goal length. Although I never wanted super long hair anyway. During the relaxed days, I would get annoyed when it brushed my neck too much so I would just pull it up into some kind of updo.... So as it grows out and I can pull it up into a big, poofy BAponytail, it's all good to me.

Well I just turned 34 so I think I qualify to answer! I grew up always hearing that any woman over 30 should have a "short do" because it maintained a look of youth more than long hair. My mom had hair down to her waist until I was 5. Then kept it very short. I have had a very short style for years until I married my husband. Since then, I have felt differently and believe all of us can have long beautiful hair. My ultimate goal is Midback length. HHG ladies:lol: !

I don't know her ethnicity, but her hair is beautiful to me:

I completely agree. I just came from a few fotkis in this thread and I must say we Black women got it goin' on!! BTW I'm also 35+ and trying to grow to at least BSL.:)

I'm not going for super long hair, but especially as a natural, I can easily see myself with brastrap length hair, stretched. I want to have long twists/braids without extensions. My hair seems to be growing about as well as it did when I was in my teens and 20s, so why not?

Well first of all 35 isn't old :)
I'm 35 and I get carded every chance they get LOL
I think part of it is because of my curls and long hair.

I'm growing my hair super long and I don't care about what people say. Long hair was perfectly natural on old and young women in another day and age, but the last 100 years women were told to have short hair as the age.

Besides, if your hair is natural you always have to factor shrinkage into the equation too. Your hair may be waist length, but look like BSL.

After menopause my hair may become brittle and thin, then I might cut it but not before that happens. I'm sure my younger relatives/children will let me know when it's time :D

I'm 44 and I'm going for it. What ever I can grow I plan to keep!!

I still cannot believe that I have gotten it this long, so I am going to keep at it and just see where it goes...I totally agree, whatever I can grow, I plan to keep, too.

In the past, I have seen some older women with short, sporty, and chic hairstyles and they wore it with pride. I have always said that I would just cut all my hair off and go natural at 40. However, as I get closer to 40 (I am 36 now), I keep thinking, "no the heck I won't!!"

I saw some women on Oprah a while back that were all 40+. They were both white and black women and the whole point of the segment was showing how these women looked in their 30's b/c they took care of themselves. (although most of them were in their 40's-70's). Some of the AA women had beautiful hair, short and long, but seeing the long haired ones dispelled the myth for me that AA women don't have to limit themselves to having short hair as they age (so they can look younger).....As someone mentioned, AA women don't age that fast anyway, so I should be good to go as I get older and not have to worry about how I am looking regardless of what my hair length is!

I think usually what works against an older woman with longer hair, is the hairstyle that she has. Wearing an outdated hairstyle will tend to make you look older. So, I think as long as you keep it current it shouldn't matter in regards to age/hair length. :)

Results, I have decided to keep my twists but cut 'em shorter.. a bob of some sort...

* great to see so many 35+ LHCF 'ers *;) Guess I need to visit this forum more often...:lachen:

Girl, you and your hair look GREAT. That is exactly what I meant by 'us' and aging. We just don't age at the same rate as our caucasian counterparts.:)

I just turned 35 and I'm bsl going for mid back. I don't think 35 is old, hell I don't think 50 is old either so its onto mid back for me. Why let all the "youngsters" have all the fun?

Blackbarbie,

Your hair is beautiful! Keep it growing, girl.

I don't understand why you CAN'T have long hair after 35? Who said so?
I'll be 39 in 2 weeks and my hair is teasing waistlength (it probably would be WL by now, but I trimmed a few inches off a while back).
My hair will reach the floor by the time I'm done!

I always thought that long hair makes people look younger? Maybe that's just me.
It does. Long hair invokes images of carefree feminine youth.
For me anyway.:D

Well, I am 35, and I'm growing my hair to wiast length. Haven't you all gotten the memo? 30's are the new 20's, 50's are the new 30's....we aren't old! The key is how you carry yourself and wear clothing appropriate for your body type, etc. We gain class not age. I prefer a fuller hairstyle to the straighter styles. This is just my taste (although I will rock the straight look as well on occasion). As long as hair is healthy and not thinning in noticeable places, I think long hair should have no age limitations. Think of Lynn Whitfield, Dianne Carol (although she uses Botox and plastic surgery)....but you get the point!

Happy growing!!!

Well I'm 37 and I plan on growing my hair until it stops growing! I'm at BSL now and my goal is waist! As long as I'm able to take care of it properly, I will be a long haired granny !!
