Hey Ladies,

This is a spin off from the thread asking what your length was when you started and what is it now. It seems the majority of the ladies started off at least SL.

I just wanted to know if there are any ladies that started of as a shortie like me and is now APL or BSL? If so, how long did it take you? How did you wear your hair when it was short?

TIA

I started off at neck length. Not one strand touching the shoulder. I'm right at APL now. It took me 14 months and I roller set the entire time. See my fotki.

well i started from a 2-inch twa... of course that's because i switched from relaxed to natural. so i had to re-learn almost everything i learned about hair and change my whole mindset.

i guess it is not helpful to know i just wore a fro most of the time... :look: i focused on moisturizing my hair as much as possible and became a religious co-washer. as my hair grew out i learned to detangle it in sections, only when my hair is loaded with conditioner.

i like the idea behind the Crown and Glory method, i bet i could've maximized my length retention that way. i did it one summer successfully, but have never made it thru the fall/winter... :nono: i start to miss my hair too much.

i started off 2004 with 3-4 inches of hair after a huge hair disaster.

3 years later feb 2007 it had grown to midback length.

when i first started off i just wanted my hair to grow, so i honestly didnt care about styling, i just brush it down and once it grew long enough for a mini ponytail i wore a phonypony for a year, then moved on to buns and ponytails( with my own hair) till it grew out. :)

The pic in my avatar was taken May 2007.

I started off with bad looking neck/ear (I think on the sides) length hair. Now a year later I'm almost touching APL. Click my myspace link at the bottom of this.

That first pic with the Eiffel tower in the back was taken almost a year ago (to the day literally). I relax after 13 weeks on Saturday, hopefully I'll be touching APL!

i shaved my head almost bald april 1, 2006

and now coming up on 2 years later

i'm APL in the back
and moving closer on the sides

the front is only chin length, though

Some of my hair was ear length, some was neck length, some was nonexistent...like my front hairline and nape. I started in Jan 06 and was between APL and BSL by May 07. I chopped 6 inches at that time and now I am 1 inch from BSL (see siggie).

I start off with the above length. I keep this length for years.

This is a picture from August I believe

I've even been shorter than the first two photos.

I worm my hair natural at the time:

I would get it straighten at the salon for special occassions.

Once I got serious about growing my hair it took me a long time to get from neck to APL BECAUSE I kept trying everything someone would post instead of sticking to what I knew worked for me.

I can post picture for days so tell me when to stop.

Now I'm trying to stop cutting to get to MBL. I don't know why I can't stop.:wallbash:

I started with a 1/2 - 1 inch TWA.

I stayed in challenges like the protective style challenges where you were allowed to comb your hair once every 2 weeks or so. So I would do twists in my hair, wash and style with only my fingers.

I kept my hair moisturized.

My hair has been growing going o 4 years now.

I started of with the TWA in my avatar and it took me a little over 18 months to get APL. I did and still do daily wash n gos. Good luck.

hEY Wannabelong, i started bald natural (chopped everything upon joining this board). i chopped a lot of my progress last year
i would first wear it bald like that and after a couple months just do either cornrows or little braids

then braidouts twistouts and fros

6months after being bald:( the hair is straigth with no heat because of high doses of msm 12,000mg daily that made all my natural 4 b hair like that)

then i grew it to armpit, texlaxed and permed

and cut it 2 days later dec 28,07

So i m basically almost back to square one. with all my progress chopped. but i now have a sound regimen and i m now regrowing my hair with vits.

i know sometimes it sounds discouraging starting from lower than shoulder length and see lengths you consider already long as starting out but be encouraged to know that your hair will grow no matter what. The key is to retain it. And i also thought before that i did not have growing hair, and my friends even told me that if i chop it bald, it won't grow anymore. i'm glad i did not listen, and now that i see my hair thrives, i know without a doubt i can reach my goals. And even if you start with short hair, and shave it countless times it will grow back healthier and longer, with proper care.

I started at chin length in January '07 thanks to a crazy stylist. I was barely touching APL a few days ago...before I trimmed off an inch or two :lachen:. I REALLY want my healthy thick ends. Now I'm about an inch or two above APL and my hair is thriving.

I started off with a TWA about one inch long (as shown on the left in the pic below). The pic on the right is of my hair pressed a couple of months ago (December 07):

03versus08.jpg

As a natural, the first year - year and a half I wore my hair in a TWA and puffs w/headbands. I also got individual braids (weave) off and on for a while. From a year and a half natural to a little over three years natural, I wore mostly twists, twistouts, and braids, but only got braids a few times. From a little over three years natural to now, my staple style is a BUN, but I get it pressed on occasion.

HTH! :drunk:

I started w/ a 1" in TWA and am now between APL & BSL. I didn't really get my hair regimen together until October 07 (my big chop was in Sept 04). I now DC on dry hair twice a week, shampoo w/ either diametress or cream of nature, I moisturize daily (sometimes twice daily) and I focus on my ends A LOT. I also started adding SAA to my conditioners and jojoba oil. Another thing that's been helping me retain length is not detangling in the shower. I know it works for some people, but it took me 3 years to figure out it doesn't work for me. :wallbash:

I spent most of my time wearing ponytails, puffs and buns...once I figured out I wasn't retaining much length this way, I started wearing twistouts most of the time. I straighten from time to time (maybe every other month) but I rarely do this since I work out and it is sure to revert.

wowwwwwww that s beautiful and inspiring Dlewis!!!! lol i m getting even more resolute and encouraged:grin:lol:yep: u rock!

I've been bare bottom bald 3 times in my life...and something that I have noticed is that with good hair care and protecting ends... almost ANYBODY can go from bald to below SL or right to APL in about 2 years.

Right now I am BSL...I say BSL because I have some pieces that touch waist...and some peices that are just past APL...but most of my hair is BSL I was bald in Jan 2003.. grew out th BSL by early 2006.

I'm not relaxed...but I am color treated. Color treated x a billion :nono: Which is why my ends are the way they are.

It does happen, it can happen, it will happen. Find out what YOUR hair likes...and keep doing it.

I totally understand what dlewis was saying about trying new things...cuz that was SO me.

This is a great thread. Thanks everyone for posting their before n after pics. Its like a light at the end of the tunnel, very inspirational.

When I started trying to grow my hair (before I found LCHF) I had a buzz cut. Several cuts, mistakes, and catastrophes later I'm a little past SL in the back, and almost SL elsewhere except for my bangs.
