Sally's (Silk Elements) version of Mixed Chicks

Thanks for the info and review ladies! I'm a Mixed Chicks user, so I will be bringing my Mixed Chicks containers into Sally to compare ingredients/ smells/ etc! Since I use MC a lot, I'll do a review of Mixed Silk once I've used it!

I picked up the Nourishing Deep Conditioner from this line and I'm sitting here with it in my hair right now. It smell good (its strong actually but its ok), I've never used MCs so idk if its a similar smell. It instantly made my hair feel extremely sift and has alot of slip. Your supposed to detangle your hair while its in, leave it in for 3 mins and rinse. I'll let you know how it works. My curls have been wack due to heat damage from my CHI so I really want to see if this will help to revitalize them. If there seems to be a difference I'll post comparison pics.

INGREDIENTS
water, cetly alcohol, behentrimonium chloride, glcol stearate, amodimethicone, glycol distearate, cetrimonium chloride, trideceth- 12, propylene acetate, citric acid, dmdm hydantoin, methylisothiazolinone, methylchloroisothiazolinone, fragance, benzyl benzoate, hexyl cinnamal, alpha-isomethyl lonone, benzyl salicylate, linalool

@NaturalDetroit- I can't wait to hear your final review!! I really want to go back and pick this up if it gets good review.

Its not a bad product, it left my hair feeling manageable and soft. Its a great detangler. Honestly it did seem to revitalize my curls *some*. And I probably will repurchase this product, I want to try the leave in as well but I'll pass on the shampoo. I used my Taliah Waajid Black Earth Shampoo and used this once as the instructions told me, when I saw how my curls were trying to regain life I went ahead and mixed up this condish with my Organix Coconut milk Deep condish, castor oil and argan oil intense condish and sat under the dryer. Not a blow your mind product tho but it could be a staple, I'll wait until a few more uses to decide if it will be a regular part of my collection.

:look: went to sally's and fought myself not to pick this up. will wait till next month for a promo or something

I was in Sally's returning a few items (that I'd been overcharged for) and to my surprise Mixed Silk was plentifully available, so I picked up a bottle of the leave-in and the conditioner. Will use it tomorrow and let you know the results.

I've never tried Mixed Chicks and decided that I needed to try that as well, so I placed an order. I'll try that when I receive it and then I'll be able to compare the two lines.

Whether or not Mixed Silk is comparable to Mixed Chicks doesn't really matter, as long as the product is good. If it is, then I'll look forward to the up coming sale.

Update: Bought the poo, leave-in and deep con this evening. Planning to try out the leave-in tomorrow. I use Mixed Chicks 3-5X per week (as I cowash daily), so I'll give a great comparison review for you all tomorrow on the leave-in. When I DC this weekend, I'll review the deep con. First 5 ingredients are similar/ same on all 3 products with their Mixed Chicks equivalent. I'm hoping Silk Chicks will be a keeper. Each product ran me $7.99 before my Sally discount.

More info soon! ;)

Wait a MIN! made my review yesterday after I DC'ed with the product. And I thought it was ok, but today after I took my flat two strand twist down, my hair feels great. I used ORS gel and Cantu Shea butter hair dressing pomade while it was slightly damp and this morning my hair feels and smells sooooooooooo good. I've used these products before on my twist and it never felt like this. So, yeah I'm def going to repurchase this and use the mixture that I used under the dryer. My hair feels awesome, My roots are silky.

I know how you guys feel about pics, I havent added anything else to my hair. It feels great :yep:. Will be repurchasing and getting the leave in. Also i dont know if I said this before but my hair as it grows has been getting so tangled when I wash it and when I rinsed my hair out I was able to part and comb it with NO TANGLES, I didnt lose any hair. Ok, I'm done. Mixed Silk has my vote

Ok, ladies! I tried Mixed Silk in my routine this morning. Here is my review:

First, I shampoo'd with the Moisturizing Poo. I just poo'd this weekend, so I was a little scared to poo b/c I only poo 2x a month or so b/c poo REALLY strips my hair. But I used more Ecostyler than usual yesterday, and I didn't want the build up. Time to see if it really lived up to its name!

Verdict: I squirted about a 1/2 dollar coin sized amount into my hand and worked it through my hair. It smelled pleasant but not overwhelming and lathered up pretty decent. After rinsing, my hair felt clean but not stripped or squeaky. Major :D ! Usually, no matter what, when I poo, I hate the way my hair feels. This was truly moisturizing and dare I say it, it actually kind of detangled my tresses! *Mr. Brown voice* WHAT THE WHAT?? I've NEVER had a poo do that!!! I will be keeping it as my staple poo! FINALLY! :yay:
Grade: A+

Next, I conditioned with a combination of HE LTR & HE NOYF, my normal cowash conditioners. I normally let the conditioner sit on my hair to sort of sink into my curls and make them easier to detangle. This time, I detangled immediately with the conditioner in my hair. NO TANGLES, NO STRANDS LOSS! Gold star for the poo! I love HE products too! I pinned my hair atop my head and continued with my regular shower routine. After showering, I let my hair down and rinsed with lukewarm water. I squeezed the excess water out of my hair with my hands.

Upon exiting the shower, with hair still dripping wet, I pumped some Mixed Silk into my hand. Immediately, I noticed that the texture/ feel of it was like the poo pretty much. I expected it to be creamier. So much so that I had to check the bottle to be sure I wasn't about to put a hand full of poo back into my hair and have to get back into the shower. Nope, it was condish! Go figure! The texture was so strange to me that after working the initial few pumps of product into my tresses, I ran and got my Mixed CHICKS leave-in and my phone and put them in my hand side by side to see the difference.

Here's a pic, with the smaller dab being Mixed CHICKS and the larger amount being Mixed SILK:

picture.php

Mixed CHICKS is more creamy and a bit thicker...Mixed SILK is more of the consistency of poo and easily spread around my hand and fell through my fingers!

I put the Mixed CHICKS back into its bottle (that stuff is EXPENSIVE and I'm not wasting!). :) I then worked the rest of the Mixed Silk leave-in into my hair. I IMMEDIATELY noticed that my curls were starting to look "skinnier" (if that makes any sense) and very defined! In short, they popped...a lot like with Mixed CHICKS, but with a little difference. At first, I was a little afraid b/c my hair was feeling kind of "hard"...not super moisturized...but I kept going like I would with Mixed Chicks.

I then put my FAVE...Shea Moisture Curl Smoothie on top of the Mixed Silk as I would with the other product. I layed my edges down with GF Wax and EcoStyler gel and applied my EZ comb. Sometimes I Denman my curls for more definition or if I am going to do coils for a coilout later. I didn't need to. The curls were pretty defined and I wanted to see what it would do on its own, much like I wear it with Mixed CHICKS. I tied my edges down with my scarf and went on about my business.

Once I got to work and it dried about 75%, I took a pic of my curls and felt my hair. This is what my hair looked like:

picture.php

My hair was VERY shiny and SOFT towards the back, but the hair up toward my EZ comb had more hold. I don't think I applied enough product in the back.

Verdict: I like the leave-in too. I'm going to use it a few more times before I decide to kick Mixed CHICKS to the curb! There's a learning curve with products, ya know?
Grade: C-/D :perplexed
*** ETA: UPDATE: With the leave-in, I experienced the same thing as kim posted later in the day and evening. Once it dried 100%, it REALLY dried my hair out. IDK about the leave-in's after effects. :nono: It looked great wet and as it was drying, but I lost the shine and my hair felt dry and stiff the rest of the day and evening, to the point that I almost did an overnight DC last night, but I got tired and went to bed. I'm going to lower my grade on the leave-in from my original B to a D. The only reason it isn't an F is b/c my hair got re-moisturized during my cowash this morning without damage or excessive tangling from the dryout. I think whatever makes Mixed CHICKS more creamy is what caused the dryness. I will likely be taking the Mixed SILK leave-in back to Sally but keeping the poo.

I think the poo will likely remain in my collection with heavy rotation.

I will use the Mixed SILK deep conditioner this weekend and let you all know what I think.

SORRY SO LONG! :)

Here's a pic of my wash n go (just with a headband) with Mixed CHICKS for comparison:

Oooh ladies, thanks SO much for the reviews and pics. Sally's is quite a hike from where I live, so i'll wait for the sale, but I'm definitely going to give it a try and review after Feb 1st. I just use MC leave-in so that will be my only comparison to make, but at the mixed silk prices, I'm going to try all three products. Love the detail of your review Diva_Esq! I'm getting anxious!!!

You're welcome! I'm such a nerd...too detail-oriented at times! :spinning:

I'd love to read your review once you have a chance to use them!

I used the DC and it's really good! Has nice slip and detangles very well. I have to say that it moisturizes okay, could be better. Overall, it's a keeper!! But, after giving my review on the leave-in. I'm now having issues with it. I've tried to play with this several different ways, but it's still too sticky and giving me dry hair. After my hair dries my defined curls are gone and I have to re-wet my hair and use my knock-off denman to define my curls again. I just realized that it has wheat protein as one of the first several ingredients. My hair does not like wheat proteins. Does anyone have any ideas on how I can get this product to work better. Should I try mixing it with another product?? HELP PLEASE!!!!

Dang I wish I could buy it but my hair hated the mixed chicks line. I'm not mixed but I couldn't pass up a free sample. I think that it's cool that Sally's has a Mixed Silk line.

I'm back after having used the Mixed Silk products. I cleansed my hair with Hair One Cleanser with Argan Oil. Then, rinsed out and used the Mixed Sik (MS) deep conditioner, which really is a conditioner that you leave on for 3 minutes according to the directions, no heat required. I probably left it on for 7-8 minutes. I liked it. I spooned out about 3 tablespoons (plastic spoon) and that turned out to be just a bit more than I needed.

This stuff is pretty thick! It detangled quite well and once rinsed out, I didn't need a rinse or anything else. I didn't blot my hair, just added the teeny bit that was left and then added the leave-in. I put in what I thought was a lot of leave-in because I wanted to see if it would flake or become extra-crunchy. None of the above happened. My hair is defined and shiny and no crunchier than when I use conditioner as a leave-in or other leave-ins. I just scrunched out with my favorite-- Argan Oil. I didn't experience any sticky residue or any residue for that matter. It is a clean product. I air-dry my hair and one of the best things about it is that it cut my drying time by about 3 hours!!!

So, Mixed Silk is high on my list. I'm forever switching up products, I have no loyalty to any brand, my staple list is very short. But because of the drying factor, this has made it to the staples list. I can only hope that the Mixed Chicks line performs as well. By the way, even though I used a lot of leave-in, I didn't make a dent in the bottle. This will be good stuff for the hot and humid summer days. One more thing, these products smell nice but they aren't over-powering. So, if there is a sale next month, I will grab a few bottles and jars.

Hmm... well first of all the leave-in feels sticky to you, so that in itself isn't good. I did not experience this, but to cure the stickies, sounds like you need more water. Did you apply leave-in to soaking wet hair? Did you apply enough leave-in? Once hair is dry, curl definition is gone. Is this immediatey upon drying or next day hair? How do you dry your hair? Air? Diffuser? And you do not touch your hair until it is completely dry? For better curl definition, the only thing that I'd try is adding a bit of conditioner to hair before adding the leave-in. Provided that leaving conditioner IN your hair helps to define your curls. I'd then comb through with the knock-off Denman and leave hair alone. See what happens. You said you scrunced out the crunchiness with Sunflower oil and ended up having to re-wet hair. Maybe you should scrunch with a moisturizer and only use a little of that. Or scrunch with a different leave-in. Also, how do you put your hair to bed using the Mixed Chicks product and how do you revive your hair the next day? Follow the same technique, assuming that you mean your curl def is gone by the next day.

Anyway, if adding a bit of conditioner to the mix before the leave-in is aplied doesn't help you maintain your definition, then I'd lose the product. What is the purpose of saving money if you have to add 5 other ingredients? Do you add to the Mixed Chicks? Don't give up yet. Work with it a little longer, get some more ideas. Mixed Silk could save you some serious dollars if you can get it to work. Good Luck

@Kellistarr- Thanks! I'll try using some other moisturizer first. I have never used the Mixed Chicks products. I've been applying the MS leave- in, to wet hair. And then I air dry. I may try to keep working with this product. Thanks for your help!!

@bolded, many of us are chronic mixers. I know I am, especially when it comes to a DC. I doesnt feel right unless I made it into my own special formula

trying to hold off on purchasing them until next month right before my move so I can already have established a bit of pjism at my new abode...lol. man I want to sample the leave in first.

We tried it on my kids's hair. works well when hair is wet, dry brittle mess when their hair is dry! I only used the leave-in. :nono:

Grade D

From the reviews I will pass on the leave in I already struggle to keep my hair moist an soft I don't need anything making my hair dry and crunchy afterwards. I will try the deep conditioner I called my Sally's they have it in stock. I swear the more I fight it the more I can't resist trying new products; however I'm more selective in what I try.

Taking my leave-in back. Keeping my poo. Idk if I'm returning the DC.

i could have sworn i posted in here. anyways, i purchased the deep conditioner and leave in today.
the smell of the deep conditioner to me smells like a very strong chemical:nono: it stayed with me all day. it made my hair soft but it wont be a repurchase because i dont like the smell or the ingredients. the leave in took away all my curl definition. i dont really care too much about added definition because my hair curls on its own. but this products took it away, not what its supposed to do. so i dont like this either lol.

ill stick with kckt.
my hair is soft though. just frizzy, dry looking.
