Rollerset Disaster--Frustrated Vent (long)

So I tried to do the right thing and give my hair a deep protein treatment this weekend. I used aphogee for damaged hair (the purple bottle). Everything was going great until after I washed it out. My hair felt a little hard and brittle. Ah well. I just deep conditioned again (MNT--this stuff is the Truth), and it was a little better, but not as soft as I would have liked. The real problem came when I tried to rollerset my hair. Usually after I aphogee (this was my first time doing it on myself. I have done it for other people and had it done in the salon), my hair does not break or even shed as I am combing it out. This time was really different. I saw long strands everywhere, and I was trying to snatch that little comb thru my wet hair like they do in the salon. So anyway, I manage to get some rollers in my hair, none really very tight or even stable, but by this time my arms are tired and my shoulders are numb and most of my hair is dry anyway because it has taken me so long. I sit my happy self under the dryer, not really knowing what to expect, but hoping for the best. Well of course my roots were a disaster. Very thick, as if I had air dried them. I tried to blow out and have come to the conclusion that I just dont have the coordination to do this. Trying to manage that brush and blow dryer, by the way my hair came out you would have thought that I had been using my feet instead of my hands. It was just really bad yall. So I am at work today with a cute outfit and poofy hair that I ended up having to use the attachment blowdryer and a pressing comb to make my hair look decent while losing even more hair in the process. It was just really depressing. I could really use some help here before I go running back to my stylist--

Why was my hair hard/brittle?

Is there a more potent moisturing conditioner that could have made this better?

I tried to find some rollersetting albums and there was a thread with some tips that I looked at before I did this, but I still look like fraggle rock today. So, is this rollersetting something that gets better with practice or can I pinpoint obvious things that I did wrong?

How, how, how do you all who do your own blowouts manage to hold the dryer and round brush? How do you do you do it without feeling that you need physical therapy afterwards?

I have not mastered roller sets, but I know what you mean about the Aphogee.

I don't get my softness back until I do several shampoos and deep conditioner and a week or so later. I have had 2 Aphogee treatments, both followed by deep conditions and I had the same result each time.

It makes me wonder if Aphogee is really worth it. I mean I know I am getting the protien, but the hardness seems to cause some breakage, as well.

I did an Aproghee treat for the first time on Sat. I was trying to stay away from using any hard. My spiral rollerset turned out pretty good except the one that did not dry. I was impressed. I've done the rollersets I am getting better but it takes so long to dry.

Why was my hair hard/brittle? I had this same problem but it wasn't unbearable. I took a bit more time to rinse it out.

Is there a more potent moisturing conditioner that could have made this better? I used Keracare for the conditioner along with a little bit of the Sauve conditioner.

Spray your hair as you rollersetting then wrap the ends around the roller. If you need more instruction look in the Newcomers Guide to StartingOut.

Practice, Lots of Practice. I am still not a pro at it but you learn. Best thing you can do is training yourself to use both hands. I know easier said than done.

The hard, brittle hair is due to the intensity of the protein. I haven't used Aphogee because I haven't needed that much protein yet, I use a milder reconstructer like Keraphix. I always follow the protein treatment with a good moisturizing conditioner like Humectress for 30 minutes or so under a plastic cap.

I learned to rollerset using the ponytail method, originating from one of the ladies here. I make several ponytails after putting in my leave-in and detangling and using safe hair bands soaked in olive oil (like Scunci Hair Hosiery). Rolling my hair up this way is very easy and doesn't take as much time.

Yes. It does get better over time with practice. I make sure to use the plastic rollers that come with covers. I'm not too skilled at using the ones you pin in. And like andreab said, definetely keep a spray bottle handy. I try to keep my hair as wet as possible when rollersetting because I get a better result. (I may have to stay under the dryer longer, but it's worth it.)

I cheat with the Ionic hot air brush (see link below). It comes with some really cool attachments to smooth out those roots easier with one hand!

I would agree with what the ladies have already posted. Rollersetting gets much better with practice. When I did my first rollerset it was disastrous but I kept on going and my rollersetting technique is much better. I am trying to learn how to use the clips now.

As for the Aphogee treatment...I use it every now and then...to make sure my hair is not hard I make sure to rinse it all out and use a very moisturizing conditioner like Elasta QP DPR 11, Nexxus Humectress, etc. afterwards for about 30 minutes with heat.

HTH :)
