I'm texlaxed now and I like my hair just the way it is. It does seem like more women are wearing their hair in its natural state on the boards and that's great. Not seeing that much where I am IRL though. Still see a whole lot of weave and damaged relaxed hair. The few heads of natural hair I see are nice though.

However, I think it is unfair as a transitioner to be placed in the relaxed cateogory as well because I'm basically caring for it like it is natural. I've switched up products and changed how I work with my hair. Also we as transitioners don't want to be relaxed. I think we are our own cateogory.

My thoughts exactly! I'm more of a baby natural.

I'm relaxed and have no intentions of going natural anytime soon. I know my natural hair well enough and sometimes even get frustrated with my relaxed hair

However, my sister has always been relaxed and her natural hair texture is beautiful; softer and looser than mine. After so many times of vowing to try the natural route, she is finally transitioning (her last relaxer was in march) and right now she has a sew in but plans on BC'ing Thanksgiving weekend.

I'm natural. I definitely don't think natural will be the majority IRL any time in the near future, and it is mostly because a lot of BW are scared, unfortunately. (NOTE: I said some...not all BW!) Many people have voiced their (unsolicited) opinion on going natural to me, usually after complimenting my hair, and they will say something like "your hair looks great, but I could NEVER do that"....followed by some comment about being bald, their hair being nappy/hard to manage, or their head being the wrong shape. :perplexed What's worse is a lot of them admittedly don't know their natural texture -- they just assume it will be dry and rough like a brillo pad.

Re: classification of transitioners -- I did not claim to be natural till after I BC'd, since the very presence of that chemically-altered hair on my head, the ends that behaved nothing like my curly roots, meant I had to treat my hair like silk. I do have a few friends who proclaimed themselves natural just as soon as they decided they were transitioning -- one friend posted on twitter that she was "6 months natural!" and felt sheepish after being asked by a few followers when she BC'd and why she continued to wear her hair straight (the truth being she had maybe 2-3" of non-straight hair that she continued to press every 2 weeks).

I feel so dumb for having relaxed my hair for so long (or rather letting my dad make that decision). I've been natural for year and a half and my hair is almost BSL already. (transitioned for 8 months)

Where I live, I see lots of natural women. The other weekend I saw this chick rockin' a huge sculpted afro....I was drooling!

Natural since 02. In my area (DMV,) we're everywhere. But I'm sure it's not like that in other cities.

No, I'm not saying my hair is all natural but it is definitely not behaving nor does it look like relaxed hair. It doesn't even feel like relaxed hair. I consider it the dead portion of my hair because of the way it is. I just feel that transistioners should be put in a separate cateogory from relaxed hair. I am doing twists, braidouts, twistouts, stretch styles, washing in sections, attempting to rollerset... dang it. Give us some credit. :yep:

Everyday month I celebrate the fact that I have been without a relaxer and that I don't plan on relaxing anytime soon. So going 23 months, 10 months, 6 months, or even 2 months means a lot to transitioners who were in the salon every 4 to 6 weeks. I understand I'm not completely natural but this is a whole nother ballgame from being relaxed.

You are a baby natural. There's nothing wrong with that at all. Yes, it's a celebration to see yourself months and months without a relaxer and going the natural route, especially when you never thought you'd do it. Celebrate! Just don't do it too loudly. Some of us are trying to catch a nap, though.

Yea, lol...although they aren't full natural, I have to give the transitioners credit, especially the long term ones. A lot of them have more NG than I do! I didn't really transition and BC'ed about 11 months ago, so all of the ladies transitioning for YEARS then snipping off the relaxed ends...yes...I give them credit! Natural Jr?

I don't think so.... At first I just planned to do a six month stretch and relax again. Then at about the fourth month, I decided to go ahead and transition. I am at the fifth month today. I will admit that I am still vacillating; however, this is due to my not having a flat iron and my periodic desire to wear my hair down and straight.

I think she meant that a transitioner is just someone with new growth. So, their really not different from a relaxed person.

I knew more clarification would be needed!

It's all technically dead, but I do get that the relaxed and natural sections of a transitioner's hair behave differently. Yes, I do appreciate and recognize that third category of transitioners. You guys (and even me at one point in time for 12 whole months) are not quite natural, but definitely not quite still relaxed -- a natural in training is a perfect description!

I'm a transitioner!!:woot: I think i've seen a lot more transitioning heads as well lately though....but it could be bc i'm only focusing on threads for transitioners:grin:

The difference is the intent. A transitioner doesn't have the intention of relaxing again and is making the "transition" physically and mentally to natural. In addition, the transition is set by the individual. It can be a long or short transition. Someone's who is relaxed or texlaxed, even during stretching, isn't doing either of those two things as they have the intent to remain relaxed or texlaxed. So, yes, it's different.

i think women who wear their own hair regardless if natural or relaxed are the minority.

weaves, wigs, extensions, lacefronts are the majority

I agree with Sylver, since there is no thank you button for comments. I'm natural and don't care to be in majority or minority it all about good healthy hair natural or relax.

I'm a baby natural (transitioner with no intentions of relaxing) :D I love playing in my NG! It's so kinky and coily!

Here In Baltimore I'd say the vast majority is relaxed/weave. But when I venture to the DC area, I see way more naturals.

Im natural an I used to be relaxed. On the forum I think there are more naturals I think a lot of the ladies start out as relaxed and achieved their goals at least close to it. Then they decide I can do this as a natural and BC. I know I did.

I see a lot of naturals in NYC. I was on the train the other day and on one train there were 6 fros and I was one of them. LOL.

Its funny that I came upon this topic. Because I was noticing the same thing in real life (as opposed to on the forums). Whenever I go out and its mostly white people, the few sistahs I see besides myself are natural. A few times I've looked around and been the only relaxed head in the room. No hate, just an observation. I was kind of happy to see that though. Variety is the spice of life.

Everybody around me is relaxed. I think that's the majority of women out there. I run into another natural from time to time but not very often.
