I'm texlaxed and I use Vitale Olive Oil No Lye. I've used lye before but always seem to come back to no lye.

My hair could take either or.
But my scalp prefers no-lye. Long gone are the days of me :burning::couchfire:for straight hair.:nono: It's not that serious *to me.*

I just realized when I was getting a perm yesterday that my creme of nature herba riche is no lye. It works really well. I deviated from it to a kiddie perm and I think that is what messed up my hair. Sorry.

...when i relax with a no lye relaxer my hair is very dry and needs more moisture. i can see the difference with a lye relaxer...

ITA!!!

I use lye now and my hair just looks and feels better.

I don't how true this is, but years ago when I used to frequent hair salons, one stylist told me that no-lye relaxers make "your hair swell (puffy)" (She gave some scientific reasoning behind it, but it's been awhile.) I kinda think it may be true; my hair doesn't "swell" as much w/lye. Maybe it's in my head.:spinning:

ITA with whoever said that. I assumed relaxed hair was supposed to be puffy when you relaxed until I used Lye.

my last two relaxers have been lye.... before that, I had been no-lye for years. I will say this was the best change I have ever made for my hair.

I've just always used no-lye, can't say why

I've been relaxed for 11 years. I've used....

Just for Me (first relaxer)
African Pride
Soft & Beautiful
That brand with all the Olive Oil
Pink Luster's
Dark 'N Lovely
PHYTOrelaxer (I had $ then :lachen:)
Mizani
and I'm sure there are others :look:
Now I'm sticking with Mizani b/c I get my relaxers done professionally and every salon carries it. I might try Affirm.

IMO, as far as relaxers in general, it makes absolutely no difference which one you use, as long as your hair is healthy enough for the process and it's applied and neutralized properly.

Did someone already post Sistaslick's article on lye v. no-lye relaxers?? Which one is best for you? http://www.associatedcontent.com/article/352470/is_lye_or_nolye_chemical_relaxing_better.html?cat=69

Damn you all convinced me to switch from no-lye to lye for my next relaxer, but i have a question, will my hair break off because of the switch? I've been using No-Lye for years and I'm just nervous of how the switch could affect my already no-lye relaxed hair.

I have the same question. My hair is currently dry and very damaged especially at the top in the middle.. I have alot of broken hairs so I cant part my hair in the middle because they stick out:nono:.. I just changed to AFFIRM NO LYE from OLIVE OIL NO LYE because my hair was dry and breaking horribly and im still having the same problem.

So from reading this thread I am conviced to change my perm back to lye. I used to use optimum(the old formula) once they changed I noticed I didnt get the same results so I switched to MIZANI NO LYE and thats when the horror happened and its been down hill from there..

So is it safe for me to switch AGAIN in my current hair state?

I have had both lye and no lye over the years. I know that my hair has stayed thickest and grew longest with the no lye relaxers. I actually have been getting Phyto for 1.5 yrs now, and over the Labor Day holiday couldn't get into my stylist. So my previous stylist put a design essentials lye on my hair. Now I know the difference The lye relaxers do not keep the ng at bay for very long, at my usual 8 weeks my hair was dry and unbearable. With my Phyto I have gone up to 10 weeks and my hair was much more manageable. My hair is super thick and if it isn't relaxed well, I end up relaxing quicker, which weakens the hair.

With no lye as long as you moisturize and dc, you will be good. With the lye I had to use protein treatments for weeks to get my hair to feel as strong as it normally does.

HTH!

Currently texlaxed, used lye but it did not take. I blame the brand... SE, as it seems to revert plenty of people.

I'm going to try Vitale before I go to no lye (which seems to overstraighten)

You all are going to make me switch to lye. I've used no-lye for years. Wonder if that's what caused some of the dullness.

No Lye relaxers generally overprocess hair - over time.

I wonder if the comments about SE lye reverting people are because you're trying to switch to LYE from NO LYE?

I stop using no lye about 13 years ago.

I voted for lye because that is what my hair prefers, but I have a sensitive scalp so I have to use no-lye.:ohwell:

The Phyospecific Index II is the best no-lye relaxer I have ever used and I don't have the problem of dryness like I do with other no-lye relaxers.

Lye relaxers DO NOT dry out my hair like the no lyes did. My hair has grown to the longest length ever with lye relaxers. My hair also feels much silkier because products penetrate better.

When I used no-lye boxed kits, my hair would be as dry as the desert, even with numerous moisturizing techniques. Now that I am used the Mizani Butter Blends System, I am loving my relaxed hair. It is thriving and growing quite well. :yup:

Now that I self-relax (for 2yrs now) I've only used No-Lye, my hair likes it so I can't really compare :ohwell:, before who knows what the stylist used, but it wasn't working for me, for sure.....:perplexed

I voted No Lye. No matter how much I based with Lye I always burned. In the past I had dryness issues with both lye and no lye, but I didn't have the best hair practices either. I didn't know anything about chelating. Now that I chelate once a month, DC weekly, and keep my protein/moisture balance in check I don't have any problems with dryness.

Now I use lye. When I used no-lye, my hair was dry, frizzy and had a lot of build up. When I switched, the difference was very clear. I use Vitale life and body.

When I initially responded to this thread I was using ORS no-lye. I have since switched back to lye (mild) because the no-lye was really drying my hair out.
