Okra and hair growth

Lush has a hair conditioner called Okra. The description says:

"Okra and nettles restore softness and shine to mistreated hair. Okra, the vegetable, is that pointy green one with ridges on the outside and soft white seeds like little peas in the middle, also known as ladies' fingers. It always tastes delicious in Indian restaurants but it's very difficult to cook because if you boil it for too long it turns to a soft mucilage. Fortunately this makes it wonderful for softening your hair, even when you've treated it so badly you think you're going to have to cut it all off because you'll never get it back into shape! We add nettles, grapes, vinegar and rosemary oil, everything you need for getting your hair shiny again. Its scent is a lovely, strong, fresh, herbal, minty mixture. This is our very strong conditioner; use it with care to restore cruelly mistreated hair."

I could (and have) eaten okra soup for days
It didn't speed up my growth rate
But it was delicious

IDK but this was posted by Infojunkie in the Best Speedy Hair Growers thread( I still don't know how to copy thresds(sorry)

A lot of us would want our hair to be longer or have more volume. Nowadays it is easy to have longer or fuller hair, you can easily add weave or use a wig. To have your own hair reach the desired length feels fantastic and natural. This is the way we do in the Caribbean: we use okra. You’ll be surprised. Okra functions as a substantial that makes your hair roots strong and will let it grow.It also gives a special glance to your hair.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Things You’ll Need:

Your own hair, never use okra on weave, even if the weave is human hair young medium size okra’s for each treatment (must be young and not hard)
Time:4 – 5 hours to let your hair wind dry (don’t use a electronic hair dryer)

Step1
hair Wash your hair, don't use conditioner, the okra will work as a special natural conditioner .Towel dry it
Step2
Take 3 okra’ s (very young ones) ,place them in the refrigerator for 2 hours ,take them out , of the refrigerator ,put them in a bowl of water for 15 minutes, take them out of the water, remove the stalk and rub the okra' s to a lotion in your hands with a little bit of salt until completely smashed and slimy .
Step3
comthrough Spread the smashed and slimy okra in your entire hair and comb through.
Let the okra dry in your hair, and then comb through with a big comb, taking out all rest pieces of okra-skin out of your hair.
Step4
okra When your hair has dried completely ,comb through and style as usual after you’ve washed it: with hair styling lotion, grease or gel.
Do not wash for 3 weeks and you will be surprised that your hair will grow 1-2 cm in length and will have more volume. The okra is a natural way of strengthening your hair roots and helps it to have more length and volume. It will give a special glance at your hair. Repeat as desired

So who has really left Okra in for 3 weeks? I'm trying it tonight, but I think I'll apply it daily since I'm a daily (or every other day) co-washer.

Not sure how to store the leftover goo in the fridge for use later in the week, though. Sure, it will spoil.

I used okra last week for 15 minutes under a heat cap but then I rinsed it out. My hair nevertheless was smooth and shiny -- much better condition.

This will be my first time using it as a leave in. Wish me luck.

I'm about to do a quick trim too and then hopefully finally be able to upload a sig pic in a couple hours after air drying -- that is if I can get a comb through the gooey leave in.

bleh- i could never eat okra. it's the consistency of snot. but i could see how it'd be a nice conditioner. tomorrow's wash day. i'll give it a try.

Well I tried this today. I sooo want/wanted for this to work. I still have bits of the okra in my hair after rinsing.

I have read different versions on how to do this. One says to not wash your hair afterwards, and leave in for 3 weeks(on ehow.com). Another one says to leave in for 30 mins and wash out.

Well the fresh okra was a little hard to mash up. I thought it would be easy. I was waiting for it to be really slimy but it wasn't. I think I should have picked softer okra. So I put it in hot water for 15 mins and the slime started to come out more. Overall it wasn't nearly slimy enough. I let it dry in my hair. I had to keep taking the okra bits and squeezing the slime out and wiping it in my hair. about 2 hours later I rinsed it out and applied conditioner.

I will try this again but with softer okra and I may cook it first. The jury is still out on this.

interesting... i usually eat it but i seriously have never heard about the usage of okra on your actual head...

as mentioned earlier, member sweetcashew's family used it on her hair with great results so she created an okra conditioner on her site shescentit.com. i REALLY want to purchase but i also want to try using it naturally. i've had so many ridiculous horror stories using food on my hair, i'm afraid though

I am too frugal and cheap to buy the 8 oz bottle of okra conditioner for 12.00. I have thick hair and i would just go through it soo quickly. The ingredients look very good but I just can't. I would rather make my own.

growing up in a Haitian household we always ate okra...at least once a week. I did have thick long hair, but I think most of that is genetics. I haven't had it in a while, and thinking bout it makin me hungry. My favorite is when its added to cubed beef stewed in a sauce and eatin with white rice...yum!
