No hair washing during mensturation?

I have decided to follow the lunar timer for trims since I have tried everything else on the planet. However my brother (of all people) brought up how many women believe you shouldn't wash your hair during your period.

I do not know the logic behind this but it seemed to have worked for these girls because they have beautiful hair. Has anyone else ever heard of this? I don't necessairly need a scientific explanation. I just wondering. I have always believed there was a certain degree of truth to old wives tales.

I think that was the belief because you would get sick. Like the tale my babysitter told me that if you walked around barefoot while on your period, you would get bad cramps. Same goes for swimming and horseback riding.

Hmmm, I've never heard of this. Maybe there is some truth to it, but I always wash my hair regardless. I've been o.k with it.

Speaking of this, has anyone been advised to not relax during menstruation? My scalp was on fire when I had my touch up a couple of days ago, and my stylist if it was that time of the month for me. It was, and I have never experienced burning so quickly! Has anybody experienced more sensitivity during this time?

In my teen years, a stylist once told me not to relax it during that time and I told her to heck with it, i needed a touch-up. I cannot honestly remember there being any side effects b/c my scalp always gets irritated when i relax.

I can't relax when I'm menstruating. My scalp is on fire within minutes. I wouldn't beleive this was true for me if I hadn't experienced it first hand. Often. I wash whenever tho.

I've heard a TON of wives tales. Some I've found to be true, some not. But I think caribbean ancestry will mean that you DEFINITELY hear a few of these no matter what! LOL!

My mother and my titi STILL holler at me when I lift anything remotely heavy when I have my period. And my Mom (as well as most of the females on my Mom's side of the family), as level headed as she usually is about most things, still has a special bag for period underwear and a speacial garbage bag that contains the hair from our brushes - Santaria  .

I've never had any issues with my hair during this time (washing, relaxing, etc). However, back in the day when I had a stylist, I would over hear other stylists & customers speaking of this.

That is funny because my mother always told me to put my hair in a bag but she never told me what to do with it.

I REALLY care about) at the same time.

My only guess would be that during your period you are at your lowliest (at least I am) and your horomones are a mess and

My family doesn't beleive in combing your hair and leaving the hair lying around. We are not of carribean descent, I think,. However, we leave in the country and people believe in spells around here. My family believes people can put spells on you from using your hair.

Yea, this is I think the "truth" in the old wives' tale. I've heard it before.

Apparently, now, it's been proven that the "low period" in terms of your immunity is 7-10 days before your period, rather than the actual period. Strange because I can remember my mom telling me that growing up..."take special care the week before your period to avoid the bugs".

My former stylist used to recommend that relaxers be avoided if at all possible the week before your period. She said that that was when your scalp was most tender.

Aside from chemical processes, I've found it to be true about scalp sensitivity generally. I also feel that my hair grows more during this timeframe, too. As someone else mentioned, I think that's hormone fluctuations, too.

I'm a licensed esthetician (skin care therapist) and I do remember being told that women should avoid waxing a week before their periods because this is when they are the most sensitive to pain... hmmmm

I don't throw the hair from my brush out in the garbage. I usually flush it down the toilet.

I don't know about the menstruation and shampooing though..I'm usually not in the mood to do so during that time anyway..Cramps and sitting under the dryer for a long time don't mix for me..

I don't do it simply because I don't feel up to it, the hopping in and out of the shower the million times to rinse out my conditioners and sitting under the dryer! During that week I just chill with my hair it can wait till I feel better!

Girl I did this too..my scalp was sore for 2 weeks...so this is definetly true as far as I'm concerned...

My bajan mother used to tell me that. Folk tale or not, but it is true. Whenever my hair is washed or curl and I have my period, my hair does not come out right. I wash and twisted my hair 2 weeks ago when I had my period and my hair looked like a disaster.

I don't know what your mother's reason was. But in the caribbean whenever you cut your hair or comb your hair, always collect all you loose hairs and burn them. That way no one can practice obeah (voodoo) on you.

That was a rule of my mom's when I was growing up in the 70s. She's from the south - Georgia.

I never really understood why though.

If I relax my hair during this time, my scalp will start to burn before its all applied. Its very sensitive at this time. My hair doesn't act right at this time anyway. Thats pony tail time.

This has nothing to do with hair but my mother used to say that you should never try to plant or transplant any type of plant or flower during your period because if you do, it will die.

I was born and raised in Louisiana, and I was told not to leave my hair lying around for the same reasons that Sbaker gave. Still today, if I comb my hair at work, I put the loose hairs in my pocket.

My mom told me that too...only instead of during your period, she said while you're pregnant.

The only thing I notice about my hair during my period is that it frizzes a lot easier and it's harder to manage. It's like for that week, it's thicker or something. I've had no problems with washing or relaxing.

I wish I had read about this relaxing thing, yesterday! I had a virgin relaxer applied yesterday (Elucence brand) and I timed it, I started burning in 4 minutes! I hadn't even got through my whole head yet and I didn't get to smooth because I washed that bad boy out at minute 7 and my scalp is still sore. It's good though because it kept some curl in the back of my head even though the front still got bone straight. I wanted a texturizer but I think I can work with this (as is getting a curly look) still.
