Naturals: What do you say when people tell you "you should relax your hair"

My response:
"I just press or flat iron it whenever I feel like wearing it straight."
And don't forget to add a smile...."more flies with honey". Once they see how much your hair has grown whenever you do wear it straight, they'll be singing a different tune. I know this from experience, AA women will try anything to grow some hair. lol

I'm sorry that you have been getting such negative comments about your hair. Me personally nobody has said anything to me about getting a perm. I love and talk about my hair so much they wouldn't dare say a word.

:lachen:

Me too! People know I have a lot of answers, but by now they're afraid to even ask. lol

No one has said that to me yet. But usually when someone tells me to do something I have no intentions on following, I sort of just "Hmmm" in a disapproving manner and then continue on with what I was saying. Gets the point across. I am also non-confrontational though.

You should say (whilst looking at her hair) a lot of people don't know how to realax hair properly so they end up with damaged hair and you prefer yours healthy and natural! :)

This is soooo true. When I was natural before and I would wash my hair and the shrinkage factor would kick in, everyone would ask "Why did I cut all my hair off" white & black mind you:ohwell:. Then when I would straighten they would ask me how my hair grew so fast.

I would give them some off the wall answer like I was raised by wolves and we learned to keep our fur:lachen:and that pretty much ended the conversation with them saying Toni you are so crazy. Now when asked why I'm going back to all natural I just say because I want to be an example of how beautiful natural hair can be.

I have not had someone say that to me. I probably would just keep it moving and not even dignify their comment with a respone.

No one's ever said that to me. I've been asked if I would ever relax again I tell them that I highly doubt it since I'm allergic to them. I remember one time my youngest sister told me that she was gonna wait til I was sleep and slap a relaxer on my hair so that she could see how long it was. I gave her a :angry2: and a:fistshake:. She hurried up and said that she was just playing. My father laughed because he knew that I was serious.

Someone told my friend that her hair was nappy ans she needed to get a perm and put some weave in it........:naughty: She said she pretty much ignored it. If that had been me...I mighta lost it. That is so RUDE. I would've looked at her like she was a :creatures and said been there done that, not going back. I would've TRIED to leave it at that..and not be a :badgirl:

Can I spin it off and ask,

What if that person had some healthy relaxed hair?

If natural person is out of their mind with tangles, splits and knots and a relaxed person asks that question it is more understandable.

Its the situation where there is nothing to spur the question or insistence other than it bothers some to see a woman with nappy hair and it needs to be straightened in order to look nice that annoys me.

No one has EVER said this to me BUT.....if they did....I would look sideways at their hair and say real slow

"Well, I prolly would if I ever saw a relaxed head, ***sideways, up and down looks again**** that I really liked!"

No one says this to me. Just tell them this is the way God made my hair so if you have a problem with that tell Him.

This is the reason why I went natural in the first place.. People tell me all the time that I need to press my hair.. No thanks!

I say something along the lines of your unsolicited advice for my hair is as rude as my unsolicited advice would be for how you dress or your need to loose weight, or (insert whatever issue you see blatantly wrong with them)... And when they say they're just trying to help.. Say, yes, you know, and so would you be... just trying to help

I just say "If you'll pay for the relaxers every 2 months and maintenance every 2 weeks I might consider it". While thats not my reason for being natural reaching into somebody's pocket is a quick way to get a subject change.

Yup, I've never had someone tell me (to my face) that I needed to relax but it's true that some women are really bothered by having to look at nappy/natural hair. They just need to get over it - maybe you should just give them a blank stare and just walk away next time someone says that to you ...
