Naturals/Transitioners- No Heat Challenge

I'm not 100% natural yet, but close! My texturized/relaxed hair actually looks like a natural texture. :p I'm gonna transition out of it and b/c. I've been heat free since 1/1/05. I know I can go longer once i'm fully natural.

I had a itty bitty slip up. I blowdried my hair last week before I got my hair braided. I didn't want to take the time to wait for my hair to dry. But I just took the braids and im back to the same routine I had before, CW 3-4 days a week and wear my hair in either a ponytail or braidout.

Are you napptural heads up for a no heat challenge? I am trying to not press my hair for at least 6 months. I finally understand the pre-warnings I got about pressing my natural hair but I did not heed the warning. :( Now I am trying not to press it for at least 6 months and I don't blow dry it either. Hopefully, my hair will only get better.
im in!!! i been hesitating, but im gonna do it for the health of my hair!

i have my hair in extensions and they will probably remain so for the summer (unless i start missin my naps too much!) but i vow, here and now, that i will not press my hair before my birthday! (dec. 18th)

if any of ya'll see me with a blow dryer or flat iron, i give you permission to knock it outta my hand like im goin for a layup!

I'd like to join. I rarely used heat anyway even when I was relaxed. Now if I want a straighter style I'll just slap my wig on lol

I'm in too! I've been experimenting with my flexi rods on air dried hair. I'm happy with the results. I think I can do this for the summer months especially since i'm transitioning. But, I still plan on purchasing a Maxiglide in the future.

I will pimp smack you if I see any heating appliances near your beautiful naps.

I was very tempted to use my blow dryer with comb attachment. I saw this asian girl with very pretty hair today and that made me wish for straight hair.

I did not give in though...

I slipped a bit last week and used the blowdryer. After the curl pudding disaster I was looking for a quick fix. This week has been much better because I'm now in box braids and since I love the style I'm going to try to wear then in 3-4 week intervals for the six months.

Haven't used heat since I've been natural and don't plan on using it in the furture. Heat damages my hair. :(

I'm in. I haven't used heat on my hair since I've BC'd. I've got a question though: what happends if/when you use heat on your natural hair? do the curls go away...permanantly???

I don't know about dryers but pressing combs can be damaging to your hair if not performed properly. I had someone press my hair and they went overboard on the heat. My hair texture is curly like a little pig tail but the some parts are straight without a wave. The stylist said I would have to do a boy cut to make the hair all even but I opted to just let it grow out and hope my texture returns.

So for the ladies that have been heat free:

What does that mean? (No flat irons or pressing combs, does it include no blowdyers)

Do you feel that your hair has benefitted from having no heat on it?

Has having no heat on your hair help to keep your curl definition?

i am one that has been heat free since i have been natural. i have not pressed..i dont blow dry...sit under a dryer..dont even own a heat appliance for the hair.

since i have not used heat since being natural..i dont have anything to compare it to..but i can only imagine that my hair has benefited from being heat free. my hair thrives quite nicely and i dont miss the smell of hair mixed in with heat.

I would love to join the challenge. I too am transitioning but rarely used heat on my hair when I was relaxed. Once a week under the hair dryer to do the roller set. I just got a blow out and am tired of the stick straight hair.
I am worried about the time it would take to air dry rodsets and roller sets. I am also limited since my hair doesn't do the wash and go style....yet
Its currently 95 with a heat index of 103 so I could live without the heat.
Just need a little help and encouragement.

What about wearing twists? I do mine so anyone can do it. It is great during the hot summer months. I was sporting a wash and Go but tired of the look. I felt like my hair was feeling too dry so I am sporting twists. My head feels cool. I don't have to worry about my hair as much in the twists. It's like do and forget it hair style. :sekret: I almost cheated and sat under the dryer for five minutes to set my hair after twisting. I didn't do it because of the challenge. See what I do for you lovely ladies.

Umm, I need to get out of this challenge. I want to get my hair blow out.

I'm still in the challenge. I haven't used heat. I'll probably buy a wig so that I can change up the do sans heat.

I'm in!!! I don't use heat at all..ever. The last time I used heat what back in January for a quick at home blow out with the hair dryer but it was low setting so it was'nt really heat.

I am assuming that not applying heat would help your hair maintain health and gain growth. Natural hair tends to be more drying so I think adding the heat would take away some of the moisture. I know during the hotter days, my hair does not do as well. It feels more dry.

I tried to do twists so I could wear the twist out. First mistake was I went to sleep with them. For me that means flat twists. :lachen: Secondly, since my hair is so fine, it doesnt dry big at all...it looks kind of funny. The next time I'd have to pay some one to do it. Thanks for the advice though....I'm pondering bantu knots & braid outs since that worked...It'll just have to be done cute so I can still leave the house without it being dry.

Yes, that's the beauty of a wig you can change your look sans damage! I was mad though when we had that heat wave in MA cuz it was too hot to wear mine

Ok so um I have to start over again. I got my hair cut this weekend and I wanted to see the layers so I curled my hair. I don't know what my problem is, last year I did so good not using heat so I don't know what's going on. But it was a hassle straighten my hair this weekend and one that I don't intend to endure for a while im really starting this time.
