NATURALS: ROLLERSETTING Challenge!!!!!!!

Hey Ladies. Thank you all so much for joining me in this challenge. Sorry I have not been able to respond until now. Life has been crazy lately.
These are not the ones I wanted to post...my current pics are taking forever to upload, but till then....

So, I prefer to wear my curls in a ponytail to keep my edges off my clothing... Oh, and these are flexi rodded. I cannot do the regular roller sets my hair comes out too full for my liking because my hair is so thick.

Click below!
Your hair is beautiful and your rollersets are on point. Look forward to seeing more for the next three months:grin:

Okay I’m I the only one this enthused about this challenge:perplexedlol??? Well anyhow, here are the current pics I was referring to in my last post(s)…. Ok no more post from me till I see at least five others.
Hey, so that there was not much action over the last few days, but I think we have a few more people who are interested now.

butting in a sec: question to the ladies who may have had a TWA. did you try using rollers on your shorter hair? this has been something I have been thinking about for 2 weeks now...just not sure if I go and actually buy the small curlers/rods if it will be a waste of money b/c my hair will be a hot mess...
but if I can get my hair to get around a curler- I'd definitely wanna join this challenge!

any thoughts, comments, suggestions?
I have done rollersets on my TWA, my hair is difficult to set on magnetic rollers so I use a different kind of rollers. I will post pix later.

I'm making a tutorial vid this weekend on how I do my ponytail rollersets so I'll post pics and the vid then.
Hey, can't wait to see your rollerset and the video. That will be very nice of you to share that with us.

I'm in! I rollerset once a week!

2. Share your method, products used and result with the group
(you don't have to do this everytime you rollerset, but atleast
once a month).

I wash my hair (co-wash or clarify w/ baking soda)
Apply protien treatment (sometimes on dry hair)
Rinse
Apply Aussie Moist conditioner to detangle
Rinse
Apply GVP Conditioning Balm
DC (or steam treatment if needed) 20 minutes
Rinse
Apply leave-ins and serum
Rollerset with black & purple magnetic rollers
Sit under soft bonnet dryer for 2 hours

My hair came out really straight this past weekend so next weekend I'm attempting the Silk Wrap
Thanks for sharing you routine. Very helpful!

Hey Mandy!

Great challenge. I am SO in but it's going to be difficult for me to participate since I only check in here periodically. Also, I am thinking of braiding up my hair for convenience and time. Other than that, I will be doing this challenge every opportunity I get.

You can use the very tiny rods with end paper. That works.
Mystic, girl you are the inspiration for this challenge. I am happy that you are in and checking in as often as is possible for you is fine as long as you keep up with the challenge:grin:

A few things

1. OP Would you request this challenge be added to the sticky with all the 2009challenges. (Wheezy)
2. Challengers. How long do your rollersets stay? Do you use direct heat on your roots.
I am trying to avoid direct heat. The front roots are a little frizzy. I used a little almond glaze this morning. Anybody using Sabino moisture block.
I will check into adding the thread to the sticky.
I am new to rollersetting my natural hair so I will see how long they set lasts.
I have not used SMB for rollersets, umm I should try it next time.

I just braided my hair last week, as well. I'm trying  to keep them in for a month. You'd think after two days of braiding I'd want to rock them for a while, but I just miss my hair. That's not something I was ever afflicted with before LHCF. I was one of those folks that could keep retouching and loving my braids for 4 months at a time! Sigh...

I'll lurk, for sure, though. Have you all seen CrownofHisGlory's roller set and silk wrap on youtube? GORGEOUS results. Here's the link I'm so in love with this vid that I made my bf watch it. :drunk: I'm SO trying this in April/May when I'd planned to straighten for the first time.
I saw that video, very helpful!

I wish I could I join this challenge, but I can't because I'm doing the wig challenge.

However, I have a tip for you ladies. I rollerset my friend's relaxed hair this weekend and tried the idea below for the first time and it works. (I didn't remember to take pictures until after I'd removed the rollers. Next time I will.)

The tip: When using mesh rollers, use slip-in hair clips instead of the pins, which can be difficult to master. (Slip-in clips are the metals clips you usually use with magnetic rollers, see image.)

Note: Mesh rollers are great because the hair dries faster. It's important that the "mesh" is good quality. Sally's sells the best mesh rollers (IMO). They are covered with a stiff plastic-like material. The mesh rollers that I saw in the BSS were covered with a thread-like mesh that wasn't firm enough to keep the hair flat and smooth.
THank you so much for the tips and the info.

I appreciate the tips, you guys~ I sooo want to try this...I don't want poofy frizz, though...those smooth rollersets are the bomb!

Just checking in to say my hair is going strong (although it's only day #3 LOL), but I wasn't sure what to expect.

I want in! This is all I do...as I only have EL length (Ear length) ... I cant braid ... so I just rollerset...my avatar is a roller set ... hahah. Im a 4a/b so I use Oyin Whipped Butter or grapeseed oil and chi silk to roller set... my hair is THIRSTY...I sleep in sponge rollers... very rarely do I straw rod under the dryer since I learned my type 4 hair doesnt do good w/ water based products.

I'm in, I havent mastered the rollerset unless with curlformers well enough to actually wear out of the house, but I do them to stretch my hair for other styles. I'm hiding my hair right now anyway so they will still be wrapped up under some type of wig.

Here is my first try!

Yall (you can tell where Im from) dont know how excited I am about this challenge. I am so grateful to everyone on this board who has shared their knowledge. I never would have known that a set on a natural head would even work!

Since I have more length to my hair, I am planning on wearing it in its natural state this spring and summer. This means that I need to keep the heat at a minimum to keep straight ends at bay, so this challenge has come right on time.

Anyway - here goes:

3255021556_bc1f834bd9_m.jpg

Rolled on hard mesh rollers (it was a bear trying to find them), praise God I did. I rolled them pretty tight, and I noticed as my hair dried the rollers tightened.

Under the dryer for 10 more minutes on medium.

Wrapped and added 2 layers of saran wrap

One more pic because I am so psyched!!!

My hair is very straight and is full just like I like it!

WOW, your hair came out FANTASTIC!!!

Very nice
job:yep:
I tried those rollers on my 4a/b hair and they did not work too well. I was so mad because I had high hopes for them. Maybe I will revisit them in the future.
They worked really well for your hair. I am yet to find the best rollers for my hair. I think I am very close because the ones I used this past weekend did a pretty good job.

I am in! I love the idea of this as a style change. My first attempt even with help turned out okay but not great. Staying under the dryer was torture :nono:

Looks like you were having fun under that pibbs:lachen:

What kind of rollers are those?
good job with the set!

I'm officially in.

Yay..welcome.

Count me in on this one! I've been doing roller sets on and off on my natural hair since 2006. Question:Are Twist n curl sets included in this challenge also?

Momi, your hair is the business!!! :thud: Omg, girl, if my roller set comes out anywhere near that fierce, I will roller set every week until my hair comes to my booty. :yep:

Soooooo where did you find the hard mesh rollers?! I've only seen the soft ones. And, if you don't mind, what did you use as your setting solution? Good to know that they'll get tighter as the hair dries. Thanks for doing the roller set and silk wrap with pics. And congratulations! You just saved yourself 50 bucks with salon results to boot! :congrats:

Thanks for all the nice comments ladies

I am telling you - I am so excited about the possibility of setting my hair at home. All of my rollers, setting lotion, and extra roller pins costs me about $17.00. I usually spend $45 at the salon. I have my own steamer so I figure I will only have to go to the salon for trims and special occasions! I will alternate between sets and wash and go's.

I used Lottabody wrap and tap lotion (extremely diluted) mixed with Kenras straight serum. I added leave in to my hair during the detangling process. Finished up with Design Essentials silk prior to saran wrap. After these pics were taken and before church last night I added a little creme which really helped with the shine factor.

I found these rollers at a BSS in Atlanta on Candler road.

Okay I now must purchase a Pibbs. I will then officially be out of control.

So what's everybody doing at night...wrap? scarf? pin curls?

Me, I'm old school so I put a little coconut oil on the ends and roll it up.

I use Oyin whipped pudding - no direct heat. I leave them in over night... w/ a scarf around it (not the best scarf either) ... The weather is getting warmer, so Im hoping to stock up on some different oils... but if I did a DC before I set my hair - I use grapeseed oil

I'm a frustrated natural 4A.

Im in search to find products and styles that doesn dry or puff.

Last night i was doing twists and decided to try to large magnetic rollers in the very back of my hair.

i used ORS lock and twist for both the twist and the rollers.

well I didn't like the twists but I DO like the hair that was on the rollers.

I had NO IDEA my hair would set on rollers!

Today the roots are a little puffy but I see potential.

I am trying to use natural products, avoiding cones is possible and that dont break the bank.

Can anyone suggest what i can try to use to set/smooth my hair?

thanks!

Hey, Lwilliams, try something light. And if you can, try the rollers that have the little grips on them, like the mesh rollers. There's a great tutorial for natural roller setting done by Hairlove here. There's also a great vid done by CrownofHisGlory here

Most naturals who rollerset say that less is more when it comes to products. A light water based leave-in like Giovanni direct mixed with water (mostly water) and a touch of setting lotion, maybe. Hairlove also seals her ends with castor oil to help the hair stick to the roller.

I don't know from experience because I'm in these darned braids. But I've been doing copious research, just biding my time til it's time for my braids to come down. In the meantime, I'm practicing! I'm doing a friends relaxed roller set this weekend. If it's cool with her, I'll take pics! :yep:

Momi your hair came out lovely, I use coconut oil also at night. Its the best of both worlds because I dont want anything water based when i'm trying to keep a straightened/sleek look but I need to keep the moisture up. Coconut oil is one of the few oils that actually penetrate the hair shaft. Olive oil does also but its a bit heavy for my hair to do too often.

Does anyone know who makes "Straight Conditioner" that CrownofHisGlory used in her youtube video? I want that. I've searched and can't find who makes it. TIA!

Yes I have but I had to flat iron afterward because it looked kinda grannyish. I used the smallest magnetic rollers I could find.

ETA: I'm in BTW:yep:

Ladies...Anyone rollersetting this weekend?

I think I will be rollersetting this weekend because I am out of town next weekend and I can't rollerset during the week.
