Rollersetting 2025 (Challenge/Hangout)

2 product reviews from my last two sets: Design Essential Compositions foam wrap and BB foam wrap lotion. I have no real reason to be trying all these foam wraps :look: but I indulged my inner product junkie so that I won't get bored with wearing the same style. Nairobi is my 5/5 foam, so these reviews kind of hold it up as the gold standard to see how close they get to that.

Design Essentials Compositions foam wrap ($16 at Sally's): Detangles the hair easily and smells good. The curls are crisp when dry, but quickly soften up once you start to fingerstyle. The hold is indeed medium, as advertised, and it didn't hold up that well to my cardio session. 4/5 overall experience.

BB foam wrap lotion ($6 at my local BSS): Smells nice, but doesn't comb through as smoothly. The curls are soft when dry, but it actually turns out to be a surprisingly firm hold. The hold is probably medium-strong, and the curls seemed relatively undisturbed after cardio. 4/5 overall experience.
I'm doing a challenge where I have to straighten a smaller section of hair for length checks weekly. I'm thinking of roller setting the ends. I don't have bonnet dryer or a blow dryer. I only have RevAir. If you have any ideas of how to get smooth ends without a blow dryer or bonnet dryer in 3 hours or less please let me know! I might experiment on how I can do it with the RevAir since its a small section of hair

With the Revair put it on the highest tension/suction setting. You will do it like the comb chase method when you flat ironed. Use whatever comb you want.

Do this when the section is dry or as close to dry as you want it.

Pull the nozzle away your roots enough to slip to comb between your roots and the nozzle. Keep the comb taught to the nozzle and slowly pull the nozzle away from your roots.

It will give some extra tension and smooth the hair as it goes.

Thank you for this detailed explanation!

I really enjoy the results of the RevAir without the flat iron, but since I flat ironed at the beginning of the challenge I need to be consistent. I want to avoid using the flat iron on my ends weekly if possible and want to roller set the ends and flat iron the roots

I'm not sure how to dry the ends with rollers without a dryer. I probably shouldn't have said "smooth ends" apologies for the confusion!

I want to know how to dry hair with rollers or something like it with the RevAir

My explanation is how to get smooth ends with the RevAir. I wasn't giving instructions on using the flat iron. I was just saying it is a similar principle.

Are you saying you want to put your hair in rollers and then use the revAir to dry it? Not sure how that will work. If you are just doing that small section and using 1 roller, I'm guessing you can just put the nozzle over the entire roller and let it sit there for a while.

You could also use the RevAir to dry the section and then put a little foam on the end, roll it up to stretch it further.

"Are you saying you want to put your hair in rollers and then use the revAir to dry it?" Exactly! :)

"You could also use the RevAir to dry the section and then put a little foam on the end, roll it up to stretch it further." This is what I was thinking of doing, but I wonder how long it would take to dry?

I'll be experimenting this coming weekend, will let you know how it goes :)

OMG, blast from the past. I LOVED her hair so much--hers is probably one of the only heads of hair that would tempt me to relax. So gorgeous and bouncy!

I think I'm going to challenge myself to achieve a good rollerset (for a straight look) on my natural hair by the end of the year. I feel like my last attempt was good, but I could be neater. TressedtoImpress on Youtube has similar hair to mine in terms of it being fine and lower density, but with a looser curl pattern. Her rollersets are inspiring to me. I'm going to keep working at it. :yep:

IM CONVINCED. I’m doing a rollerset next weekend

@faithVA The experiment was a fail, rollers can not fit inside the RevAir. When I saw the width/opening of the RevAir, I was like what was I thinking???

I ended up flat ironing. When my hair can wrap around a large enough roller (I like loose curls) I'll start roller setting then

I tried roller setting for awhile maybe 10ish years ago, but I never got that good so it always took me a long time. How long does it take you guys to set your hair - not including the dryer time?
It takes me no longer than 25 minutes for every type of set that I do.

Fastest= purple flexirods using traditional “sausage curl” rolling, 15 minutes—this is what I do pretty often when I start the process at 8 pm and I’m trying to get to bed by 10.

Medium= orange, blue, or red flexirods, 20 minutes

Longest= mohawk method traditional rollerset, 25 minutes of feeling so uncoordinated lol (I just have to keep working on these!)

I’ve done this kind of set before and it comes out pretty nice. My only gripe is that it is hard to get those roots dry.
Now I understand why she was under the dryer for 45 minutes and left them in overnight. I was like why leave them in so long when she used a dryer. Maybe you should try this to see if it's a "fool proof" method

A few random thoughts from me:
- my flexirod set comes out significantly smoother when i use a deep conditioner vs. regular rinse out, even when all of the other variables (products, weather, ways to preserve it) are equal.

- i just bought some of the Ethiopian tension rollers because I'm convinced they might be key to a super smooth set for natural hair. I'll try to post about my experience when (if! I really hope that was a reputable Amazon seller cause if not, yikes lol) they arrive.

- i'm in the mood to wear some buns for a few weeks, so i'll do less flexirods and more rollersetting as a means of drying my hair and then bun. I'm inspired by old posts from Traycee, an OG member here, who had such beautiful buns.
Here's a link to a cute messy bun. Here's one of a very elegant side bun that she did. Another one with a braid in the front--so easy and cute! And another picture of her daily bun--seems to be twists pinned up.

That is an interesting finding about the DC. When you DC are you just leaving it in for a certain period of time or are you using heat or a cap with the DC?

I am too lazy to get out and go under the dryer, so it is just an in-shower DC for 5-10 minutes while I do my other shower tasks. I usually intend to at least put on a cap, but I always forget to bring it in the shower.

I really like both of the products under comparison: the MoKnowsHair DC and the redken all soft mega curls conditioner. And my hair feels great after using both of them. So it was kind of shocking to me to realize just how different those results are between the two flexirod sets I did last week.

Do you leave the Redken on as long? I was just wondering if the time difference was a factor or if it was truly just product related.

I got my tension rollers. I'm going to try them tonight and hopefully it comes out good, otherwise I'll have to wear a bun for Saturday.
For some reason, I had the impression that they were flexible and not rigid, but we'll see how that works out.

My hair actually still looks really cute from this flexirod set done on Monday. I did smaller rods and I haven't done much cardio this week (shameful!), so it's less frizzy than it usually gets. I plan to shampoo, put in my DC and run at least 2 miles on my home treadmill, then rinse it out, and rollerset with the tension rollers. I may flatiron afterwards, depending on how it comes out.

The tension rollers work really well, and I think that’s one of the smoothest sets that I’ve ever gotten. I think with longer hair and more practice, I could get a wearable style with just the rollerset. For now, the easiest thing to really do for my Saturday plans was to just flat-iron it all out.

here are a few pics if I can get them to attach. Taking a pic of my back really motivates me to be more consistent with other my weight loss lol—I want my back looking way slimmer than it currently is.

Your hair looks beautiful, thick, and healthy! :)

What method did you use to get your hair straight after the roller set?

Aww thank you so much! You are too kind.
After rollersetting, I added serum, wrapped it, and went back under the dryer. Then I did one pass in medium sections with my ancient Conair Infiniti pro flat iron at 375 degrees. MoKnowsHair has a couple of videos with this process, called the silk roller wrap.

It’s probably not as bone straight as doing a blowdry first, but I think it’s a decent lower heat path to straight enough hair for me. :yep:

Thanks for sharing! Not a fan of "bone straight" - this is perfect :)

This method also seems to protect your ends, which retains length

Waiting patiently to get longer hair to join you in incorporating roller setting in some method. I like using larger rollers, it may be awhile

Would love to know the Ethiopian rollers you got

I’m contemplating getting on board with this, but I always sucked at rollersets . Maybe I can become more coordinated.

Do I need a hooded dryer? I have one of those bonnet attachments but not a real hooded dryer (not opposed to a real one in another year). I just want a better way to protect my freshly trimmed ends but also make it look styled
