I've been a natural 4a my entire life, 27 years, and it's been a crazy journey. I've always loved my hair, but I've had no love for the knots, the detangling the matting that come with it. I purchased palm red butter from www.camdengrey.com about a month ago. After using it for a week, I nearly cried because I realized that washing and detangling my hair would NEVER be the same.
First time I used it, I conditioner washed with Elucence and detangled with my fingers, my usual routine. While my hair was still soaking wet, I applied palm red butter throughout its length and bunned it up. The next day, the residue from the butter made detangling again in the shower unbelievable. My fingers just glided through. I used to wash my hair once a week. It would take about an hour to wash and detangle. Now, I wash every day and it takes about 10 minutes. And you're going to think I'm lying, but I've had knots literally glide off of my strands since using this product. And when my hair's wet, the butter gives me a curl pattern that's out of this world (though I don't know how to maintain that when it dries.)
I can't swear that the product will work the same way for everyone. Some people swear by shea butter, and it seems to matte my hair. Same with CD Healthy Hair Butter. I also experimented with sweet almond butter, olive butter, jojoba butter and sunflower butter from the camden site. (somehow i knew a butter would be my hair's salvation). But the palm red butter is what has worked for me. Downsides: It's a colored butter. It's got a subtle buttery smell. And shipping is a beast. And I don't know if this is correlated, but when I first started experimenting with all of those butters, I briefly got a small rash on my neck. It only happened once...though honestly, I don't know if a rash would make me give this product up.
I've been on LHCF for forever. Gotten tons of tips/inspiration from so many of you. I never post because I'm insanely risk-averse. I would feel so guilty recommending something that didn't work for the same people who have helped me so much. But this time, I felt more guilty about not sharing this. I hope that those of you having trouble with matting/knots/detangling give this a try and have as much success with it as I have. And it's probably too early to know for sure, but I could almost swear that my hair is inching past what I thought was its terminal length. I guess that's what happens when you rid yourself of the knots and marathon detangling sessions.
