It seems HIGHLY unlikely that ST is a type 3c/4a. I'd say 3a/3b. But like the other posters said, your hair will have to grow out more.

Otherwise, isn't Mestiza is the type 2 category? not sure. Perhaps you two might have similar textures.

Hey SouthernTease,

Contrary to what others have stated in this thread and after seeing this picture http://i10.tinypic.com/53ftz4j.jpg and the pictures of your hair when you were younger, I think your hair IS type 2b/3a. It looks more wavy with no actual helix formation or spiral curl definition.

In other words, your hair doesn't look like this:

After checking out the album, I actually retract what I said. The hair actually looks 3b in the back and around 3/c-4/aish in the front and crown.

Poohbear you really did some homework didn't ya? The above link really looks like 2b/3a to you? It's even wet and being pulled and it still screams 3c/4a. I guess I'm just using my type 3 daughter as a reference point and I'm not seeing it. :ohwell:

Chicoro and zzirvingj is what I consider 3C/4A...

I would consider my hair type 4A with a mixture of 4B. 4A is a nappy texture with a tight curl/coil pattern.

Okay, I wasn't paying attention and didn't bother to look at the photos closely. The front definitely looks 3c/4a! It even looks tighter than my newgrowth in that area while I was transitioning and I'm 4a. Interesting mix of textures.

ST, you're definitely going to have a lot of textures to work with, so what's best is finding what's going to work for YOUR hair. Keep us updated on how your hair changes. Transitioning is definitely going to be an enlightening journey.

BTW: The pics of your hair as a child are GORGEOUS! Such thick and nicely styled hair! Can't wait to see your hair after the transition!!

If you believe that you are 2x or 2z, then your are definitely a 3.

You will only know when you transition enough. Stacey is a 3...I guess she relaxes her hair now. I remember seeing her natural hair on the Cosby Show, and it was very curly. She was Denise's friend that need to see an OBGYN.

I believe that Sally Richarson is type 2...not Stacey.

You are definitely a 3. I would say 3a/b...or 3b/c...whatever. You will see. Are you transitioning?

Also, judging from your pics as a little girl, neither is your natural curl. One looks like it was braided and/or rolled...and the other was rolled. They're both manipulated. If you had an air dryed pic then you could see for sure.

I know that it's confusing.

Type 3 hair can look wavy too!

Also, keep in mind that chemicals from relaxers changes hair texture...so let it grow out and you will see.

My story is similar to yours...but my stylist didn't want to put a relaxer in my hair, but I cried for one. :ohwell:

This hair typing stuff is only about learning what works for your hair. Since her texture is like a type 3, but with 2 waves and no curls, she can benefit more from what works for type 3 than a type 2...because of her texture.

Really PoohBear? I know our hair types are similar. I don't have as much shrinkage as you do though. Do your B pieces act different than the A pieces? How can you tell the difference? I have 3c bits all through my hair. I can feel the difference in the size of the coils. The 3c coils are bigger. If I airdry, the 3c pieces stick out all over the place bc they have less shrinkage.

To the OP: You won't know for sure until you chop, WE can't tell you anything for sure because WE haven't seen your natural hair (only transitioning pics, which are misleading). Since YOU have seen your hair and says its a wavy 2 something, who can tell you different? Good luck with your transition. I'm sure any type confusion will be cleared up when the relaxed ends hit the floor. As for other 2 type members, Poohbear's list is a good tool.

Well lemme throw my 2 cents in. I'm a 4a, but mostly b. I have a huge chunk of 3c hair in the front. It detangles the easiest and growns the longest. I'm 4a in the crown areas, and 4b everywhere else, including edges.

I can tell based on how certain parts of my hair looks, coils, poofy clouds, waves.

Yep. I have more 4A pieces than 4B pieces though. And yes, the 4B pieces act differently than the 4A pieces. The 4B pieces do not form those tiny tight clumps of coils. The 4B pieces have a tight coil pattern but these pieces are undefined. I don't have any type 3 pieces on my head. You having 3C pieces is probably why you have less shrinkage than me. :yep:

I never even thought about that. I get big clumps all through my hair. I think I'm finally getting used to the shrinkage. I'm just glad I don't have tangles. Thanks Pooh... And Thanks StrawberryQueen too. I'm gonna let my hair airdry with no product tommorow and see exactly how many textures I see.

Yes, but man! She posted some pics of a bad, bad breakage episode she had where the whole middle had nearly broken off to APL. It was almost like a Macherieamour kind of story. And she slowly grew it all back out with good old fashioned healthy hair care! Seeing those pics was so inspirational to alot of people. Her hair was still lengthy, but like us all, she was showing us that it wasn't immune from damage.

I remember when she was having problems with tangling during her washes and we told her about washing in sections-- and reading her site, she still does this to this day. She was such a sweet person with very interesting ideas about things. I always loved to read her posts, always something to learn from that wise one. Ahhhh memories . . . :drunk:

The exception to the rule!
Usually the looser the curl, the less textured the hair and the softer it is. But that is not always the case. This is a perfect example of loose curl with highly textured hair. It is thick, fairly course and dry, but has big loose curls and waves. So each hair type can come in different textures. Sometimes type 4 hair can be very fine and silky, with super tight kinks.

I have Type 2 hair. I used to put a relaxer in my hair on average 2 times per year. I used to love wearing my hair straight all of the time and felt that a relaxer would be less damaging for my hair than using a lot of heat.

In Jan. 2006, I started my transition back to natural and it's the best thing that I've ever done for my hair. I had healthy relaxed hair, but I just prefer my natural hair.

I have no intentions of doing a big chop. I will cut small amounts off at a time. My transition will be a long one.

I'm going to look for some links that may help you w/ hair typing.

Fia's Hair Typing System

FIRST CLASSIFIER - Your curliness (or lack thereof)

The straight ones
1a - stick straight
1b - straight but with a slight body wave, just enough to add some volume, doesn't look wavy
1c - straight with body wave and one or two visible S-waves (e.g. nape of neck or temples)

The wavy ones
2a - loose, stretched out S-waves throughout the hair
2b - shorter, more distinct S-waves (similar to waves from braiding damp hair)
2c - distinct S-waves and the odd spiral curl forming here and there

The curly ones
3a - big, loose spiral curls
3b - bouncy ringlets
3c - tight corkscrews

The really curly ones
4a - tightly coiled S-curls
4b - tightly coiled hair bending in sharp angles (Z-pattern)

SECOND CLASSIFIER - What (most of) your individual strands look like

F - Fine
Thin strands that sometimes are almost translucent when held up to the light. Shed strands can be hard to see even against a contrasting background. Similar to hair found on many people of Scandinavian descent.

You can also try rolling a strand between your thumb and index finger. Fine hair is difficult to feel or it feels like an ultra-fine strand of silk

M - Medium
Strands are neither fine nor coarse. Similar to hair found on many Caucasians.

You can also try rolling a strand between your thumb and index finger. Medium hair feels like a cotton thread. You can feel it, but it isn't stiff or rough. It is neither fine or coarse.

C - Coarse
Thick strands that where shed strands usually are easily identified against most backgrounds. Similar to hair found on many people of Asian or native American descent.

You can also try rolling a strand between your thumb and index finger. Coarse hair feels hard and wiry. As you roll it back and forth, you may actually hear it.

THIRD CLASSIFIER - Your overall volume of hair

Put your hair in a ponytail with as much hair as possible in it. Don't bother with the way it looks - the goal is to have most/all of your hair in there. If it means it sits smack dab on top of your head, put it there.

Measure the circumference of the ponytail. If you have bangs and/or you can't get all of your hair in there adjust according to how much of your hair you have measured.

i - thin (less than 2 inches/5 centimeters)
ii - normal (between 2-4 inches or 5-10 centimeters)
iii - thick (more than 4 inches/10 centimeters)

Very Very True. I LOVE her hair. Shows that relaxed hair can be long and gorgeous if properly taken care of.

i agree with the other ladies...
you won't be able to tell the true texture
of your hair until you fully transition,
and also, your hair texture is probably not
the same as it was when you were a child
our texture changes as we get older
due to hormones and some external factors
but in the meantime
you can browse the albums that
poohbear mentioned to get an idea
of what to do to your hair while transitioning
and what to look forward too....
