Natural Hair Becoming Trendy

I live in the D.C. area and I have noticed since I first moved here that alot of people wear natural styles like twists, afro puffs, locs, etc. My mother lives in Florida and when I go to visit, I notice that there are not very many people with natural hair, so I stand out more; I have only seen one natural hair salon and the stylists do not seem all that experienced to me. At home, in D.C., I feel like I blend in because it is not uncommon to have natural hair here.

yes, youre right....if our hair was anything other than nappy, that is....in this country, wearing your hair natural is fine and dandy for other races, but OUR hair is considered ugly and "undone".....so, yes, there are a lot more people going natural, but whos to say why theyve gone natural....it could be because they think it'll look like the chick in the mcdonald's commercial (and when it doesnt they get disappointed and go right back to whatever they wer doing before) or it might be because they are interested in what their natural hair looks like....there are tons of reasons why so many people maybe going natural, and there are also tons of reasons why many wont STAY natural....and once you stop seeing so many natural heads in the media (if that happens) you will probably stop seeing as many natural heads in real life....because for a lot of people, its just an accessory.

I totally agree...

it shouldn't be a trend but quite possibly it is....

ITA!!
Whats going to happen when or if you stop seeing it on tv, commercials, videos etc..

I agree with shatani. when the natural hair bandwagon dies down, how many naturals will still be standing? While i agree everyone goes natural for different reasons, for some people its only a trend and as soon as the next fad comes along they will be the first ones ready to slap the relaxer back on. This is why the concept of going natural goes much deeper for some folks than just doing the bc and cutting out the relaxer. There is a certain degree of "mental transition" that has to go on when one decides to wear their hair natural, because all your previous notions of beauty and acceptability will be challenged.
