I have noticed a lot of natural heads in the DC area. It seems as of late it is trendy to be natural. Have you noticed more naturals in your area?

I would say yes. But it seems that most of the naturals hail from the north side of town. Must be the "bippie" vibe.

I have noticed that too. What is Bippie? Do you mean Buppy?

Yes I am noticing it much more lately, and so many people telling me they are considering transitioning.

No I mean bippie as in Black hippie and I thought buppy was a Black yuppie.

ETA: I guess it means the same thing. BTW I don't mean anything negative by bippie or buppie.

Well ladies, have you noticed the increasing numbers of natural textured black models in advertisements lately? Finally natural hair is being embraced in all its glory and has truly gone mainstream. I love it.

Definitely! It seems like 80% of the black women I see in commercials are sporting fros or curly fros. I love it too!

I used to be self conscious about wearing my natural hair out, but it's not as uncommon as I thought. At my school, there are plenty of natural around. It's very encouraging.

I have noticed this as well.

I have been noticing a lot more woman wearing short afros here in Chicago. They look beautiful!! Personally I don't consider something wearing natural hair to be trendy. It is the way the most of us were born. :)

i have been noticing it too. Even at work, 2 ladies have gone twa style. they were the ones that gave me the courage to go natural. And there's also a lady that wears hers out everyday. people make fun of her which isnt fair. I notice a lot of natural ladies everywhere now. gas stations and stuff.

Florida. No. Straight relaxers. Everybody like they hair fried, dyed, and freezed (literally) to the side. I thought about going natural after seeing my daughters texture in its natural state but Im still on the fence.

this isnt my traditional area (translation: im not from around these parts) so i cant judge if its more....but theres a lot! and not to mention every other commercial is chock full of natural heads! its definitely a trend....

im ambivalent about it....like when youre REALLY into a local band....and you love them...and no one has heard of them....and then all of a sudden theyre famous! and now everyone loves them and their on the bandwagon now....youre happy for their success, but you long for the days when you had them to yourself....

thats kind of how i feel about it....im glad to see so many natural heads, but i dont wish to be seen as part of a trend or something....

Man I Hope This Ain't A Trend, its Nice Seeing Alot Of Black Women Sporting Natural Looks,i Love It Oooohhhhhhhh Soooooo Much!!!,big, bushy, kinky ,frizzy, coily, thats The Kind Of Hair I Love The Most Out Of All Hair Textures!!!!!

ONLY TIME WILL TELL,IF THIS IS A "TRENDY" THING OR NOT.

I haven't noticed any surge in natural haired women in my surrounding area. Many black models have always been show in the media with natural hair because it makes them look more "exotic." The online boards are the only place I have seen a surge in natural heads.

I definitely think it's a trend for many. They are usually the ones who are never happy with their hair and always complaining about one thing or something else. That's a dead giveaway of a 'trend nappy' to me. It's like they were expecting something else than what they got. On the other hand most non trendy naturals are just glad to be natural and are learning and enjoying their hair.

I'm in Atlanta and there are so many naturals here that we dont stand out much. In my office of 14 people 4 of us are natural. Then there was a new girl who started last week and she started asking me questions about my hair and then told me she was transitioning out of the relaxer and hadnt touched up since December. I just gave her some quick advice on transition styles and stuff. The natural girls at my job wear puffs, twists, fros, twistouts just whatever. It's nice :).

Sure I still encounter a few black women who make faces and act like they've never seen a napp before in their lives. Those people just make me laugh because i'm thinking.... "Come ON now be serious. You just better hope Bronner Bros don't go on strike" :lachen: -- jainygirl

I've noticed more natural folks too. Part of that is because I'm transitioning (just like when you get a new car, you start noticing all the other cars like yours), so I look out for natural styles more. I have noticed a huge push in entertainment for the natural look (commericals and music particularly (except videos, of course)).

Whether it's a trend? I sure hope not, although certainly some folks are doing it cause others are doing it--like jainygirl said, those are easy to spot, cause as soon as they realize their hair is not going to look like the gal in the next cubicle's hair... Some look at being natural as just another option of hairstyling (and if that floats the boat, that's cool too). Some are temporarily doing it to repair from damaged hair. I hope there will always be a growing number of women who go and stay natural though--the more people see natural hair, the more they will get used to natural hair being the core of the black hair lexicon instead of only as some sort of militant alternative lifestyle statement.

definately noticing it more on tv and around. Most of the people I know who have gone natural absolutely love it and would never go back.
I love my relaxed hair though and am not interested in going natural right now...Maybe in future.

I think it's more of a trend on TV than in real life. Many women have been natural for a few years now. But then again, I'm a naturallycury.com old head.

True but at one point I didn't see nearly as many naturals. Especially 4a/b.

I feel you on those behind the times folks that don't embrace natural hair. You should show them your pictures with all that long relaxed hair. They would sound like my grandaddy "why you cut off all that pretty black hair:.

Maybe I am just noticing it more too becasue I am natural. I am just happy to see more blacks taking advantage of different looks. When I go places I am normally not the only natural. In my office we have like 4 or 5.

very commmon in nyc especially Brooklyn and SoHo .

One of my New York girlfriends was telling me that. I was telling her some of the comments I hear and she couldn't believe it. She thinks this area has too many busy bodies. I guess New Yorkers tend to mind their own business more.

I too hope that it's not a trend. I hope that many more will choose to wear their hair naturally, what they were born with. But most of we naturals know that you have to change you mind/outlook on naps before you'll embrace your own natural texture.
But from at least one comment in this thread, some of us still have "good hair" "bad hair" issues.

I don't think it's a trend for the most part, simply due to the proliferation of natural hair care products that we've never had before. Every time you turn around there's a new product for natural curls, waves and kinks. Such products can help make it easier for naturals to remain so. And let's not forget the natural hair styles that offer so many more beautiful options such as twist outs, bantu knot sets, etc. Even relaxed heads are rocking these styles. I'm one of only three naturals in a large office full of whites and I know we stand out, and beautifully so. One of my relaxed co-workers approached me the other day with questions about transitioning and instructions for doing a twist out. Of course I was only too happy to help her out. ;)

I wore my own natural texture for 17 years. For me, its not about embracing my own natural texture. Its up to me and I'm doing what I want with my own hair. So far healthy and still thick and good. I definately don't knock anyone for going natural, if anything I praise it.
I just don't want to right now.
