My patient burned her face while relaxing.....

Lawdy this is something my step-mother does without a blink of an eye!

My patient was self-relaxing when she decided to light a cigarette while she waited for the "perm to take". I am not sure if it was the actual creme or the fumes but she said a big swirl of flames burst when whe flicked her lighter and her face and some of her hair got burned badly...I mean severe 3rd degree burns. She was a very pretty woman and upon seeing her face for the first time in the last 3 weeks I just can't believe it. I wanted to cry because her face looked so terrible and it looked extremely painful. My stepmother has no problem lighting a cigarette while she let's the relaxer "take". I told her about this and she won't be doing this anymore....

Yes it wasn't very wise at all. She is however a "mental health" patient and it's just sad, because although she is suffers from mental illness this woman takes extreme pride in her appearance.

No unfortunately she was burned really bad, there will be discoloration and some slight deformities........

Part of me still can't believe this happened. WOW. Hope she recovers well physically and emotionally . I can...or maybe I can't, imagine how shocking and depressing this would be.

This is just terrible...I would never think (but then I don't smoke). I'm really sorry to hear this and my heart goes out to this woman. It was a simple mistake that will cost her a lot. I'll keep her in my prayers.

I have heard some horror stories about the relaxer and the process but this is a first.

I remember when people use to smoke in beauty salons (a loooooong time ago) you would see these women in there smoking and getting their hair done.

I prayed for her and her family. My ex was burned 2nd and 3rd degree it is something I will never forget in my lifetime. The recovery was absolutely BRUTAL!

I sure hope the procedure in how they remove the scabbing has been updated, back then in order to stop the scabbing they would place him in a whirpool tub and then proceed to take the scabs off with tweezers.

He did not want to take the pain medication because the doctor said he could become addicted (Morphine). Then for two years there was 2 surgeries and another surgery a few years after that. The memories of that are with me forever.

What an awful thing to happen to someone. My heart goes out to her. I know she is hurting so much, both physically and mentally. She definitely needs to go and talk to someone to help deal with this. (But I assume she already is, since you did mention that she is a mental health patient).

ITA. That's so sad. I know I thought my small patch of chemical burn was so painful (this was a long time ago but i still remember,) so I can only imagine how she's hurting. I hope she can find relief from the burn with her medicines... and she probably can use some cocoa butter and aloe vera--at least when i get burned, I alternate using cocoa butter and aloe vera and strongly believe in their powers.

I can never understand why people don't READ the instructions on these products. I guess it's because relaxers are so common people take them lightly (?) but the instructions clearly say it's highly flammable. They also say it many cause hair loss, burns and bunch of other things that make you think 5 or 6 times befor putting it on your head. I remember I was scared as hell when i did my first self-relaxer, I was literally praying to God while washing it out that all my hair wouldn't all fall out.

I hope she heals well and I hope people start being more cautious
