My LHCF Letter to the Tyra Show... I NEED EDITS!

PrettyF&B, I believe you're coming from a GREAT place, wanting to make a difference here. But, let's honestly take a look at where Tyra is coming from, shall we?

With her focus on pleasing her audience, do you honestly think she didn't know beforehand the impression that particular show would leave people with? (I keep a lot of garbage out of my life by watching NO TV, BTW)

I just think that if she had so little class as to produce such a show, she probably isn't classy enough to use your information in a positive manner. So, think seriously about what her spin would be on our forum. We've opened our hearts to each other here with everything from relationship issues to someone using listerine on a scalp before a relaxer. Do you really want to see someone without your pure motives take our stuff and trash it? I could just see her finding volunteers who have her same level of "class" go on her show and say what LHCF has done to them!

What do you think about that possibility? No one knows who I am, my face is unseen.....do you want YOUR face, even though it's pretty, on TV with your concerns and questions highlighted? What about all the other members here? Perhaps you should PM Allandra or another one of the forum moderators, and consider it more deeply, hmm? I personally think it's not a good idea to share in this manner.

I will respect the wishes of the members but I guess I am not a feardul person. I dont understand why you girls are so afraid of enlightening the world. Thats just my opinion.

Well someone has to do something, because I am sick and tired of hearing her talk about her weave. I mean every single show she mentions it.

Personally I do not see anything wrong with the letter itself. Maybe just leave out the LHCF part.

I just think it has to be really credible to get everyone on board. IMO if you just present a site, that gives people room to critize and make a mockery, and it could become expolited.

What about Oprah also?

I think we shoud write a letter to Oprah about black hair books, she seems likely to take it more serious.

I'll say this, then I'm getting off my soap box: I think you're mistake is thinking that the world wants to be enlightened. The majority of the people in the "world" want to be entertained, not enlightened. Remember "broad is the way, and many are found therein"? We have to be careful not to "cast our pearls before swine" lest they trample on them then turn on us thereafter.

*jumps down from soap box*

i don't watch her anymore because ignorance is bliss. i hope people don't believe she's reppin' for sisters because it's just a dog and pony show for clear folks :ohwell:

My thought exactly! Shows like tyra are all about ratings and shock factor! She has not reached Oprah's level. Tyra's executive producers pay the bills and call the shots; not Tyra. She is just a celebrity face they use to lure viewers.
Her producers would have a field day mocking some of the "hair growing secrets" some of the member's use for the sake of growing long hair.
Tv talk shows are an ugly business; their goal is to shed just a tiny bit of light on a subject matter, and a whole lot of degrading bullsh** nonsense all in the name of tv RATINGS!

I agree, I am not to keen on having LHCF out there. I want to help others, really I do but I don't tell everyone about this site. I think I say to much about myself as it is. I dont' mind that either but I think I would feel another way say if someone I knew, knew what I really thought about this or that.

It's not that we are fearful, but all you have to do is read post where members stated that the told so and so about taking care of hair and so and so wouldn't listen. The you read post about would we and why wouldn't we tell people about this site. Now if we don't want our closest friends and associates to know about this site why would we want the nation to know. Also as stated, Tyra's people would make this site the laughing stock of the nation. Just think we found a site where black ladies uses " MN" on their hair. Do we really want. People should be enlighten if and only if they want to.

While I do like Tyra, I agree. Her show just like any other show is about RATINGS. It is what it is. Especially with her being a new talk show host. Her show is in its 3rd season which is good for a young black woman host. Oprah is the only one who's ever really stuck around. For all we know, Tyra may have thought about doing a show on black hair but thought it would be too controversial. We also have to remember that the majority of her audience probably isn't black. And it would be inviting them into our world a bit too much, IMO. They might not even be interested and change the channel. So that's probably why it hasn't been done. Yes, Tyra does talk about race but if you notice, she tries to stay neutral. She always has a variety of people on her panel and tries to balance things as much as possible. Like she's trying to cater to multicultural needs or a broader audience. Which in my opinion can dilute what you're trying to say. I noticed Vibe Vixen did that a lot in their magazine.

Oprah on the other hand has earned the right to say and talk about whatever she chooses. So I do think that it would be more likely for her to pull this discussion off.

I am sorry but you guys are very discouraging. I was looking for support and suggestions. Not all the criticism. I can keep LHCF out of the light but what can I do to make the letter appealing. That was the point of the this thread. You guys have changed it to why you think the world will not except this. :ohwell: :perplexed

I'm sorry. And that wasn't my intent. You asked for our opinions, and that is in turn what you got. Everybody else's opinions certainly are as valid as yours are. We all paid our $5 too. I think that this is a good idea and that a show needs to be done about black hair. Many people have stated that the letter is fine, as is. Just take the part about LHCF out. That's all. But I also think that you need to take all of these things into account because you are not the only person that makes up LHCF. If you send this site into the Tyra Show you are implicating all 200,000 of us on this site. Did you think about the fact that there could be negative repurcussions for the site as a result of your letter? I think that's what we're trying to bring to your attention.

Im sorry :ohwell: Becasue this is/was a great idea. I was hoping you didnt feel downed.

You can make the letter appealing by having before and after pictures---as many as possible and pictures & descriptions of black hair books.

And its your idea, but i think we should do it in the best way possible:yep:

Maybe you can mention that you "know" several women with lengthy, healthy tresses. I'm sure there are women on the board that wouldn't mind representing for healthy-haired black women. I would be willing to share a photo or two or perhaps even make an appearance. :) I'm sure others would as well.

I'd love to represent on the show! I mean, I know my hair isn't long or anything now, but by the time Tyra's producers receive the letter, take time to debate on whether to do the show, finally decide to do it, gather resources (experts, representers, etc.), plan a date, and air it...my hair would be a nice length by then

Got it. I am not LHCF only a part of it. I thought to ask my ladies about the letter. You all are ONLY offering criticism on the LHCF and getting long explanations about why. What about the other parts of the letter? I mean I do not need 100 people to tell me the same thing over and over again. I do not need 100 people telling me that they dont like the Tyra Show (I am a business women and I use everything for good whether it is accepted or not). I also do not need 100 people telling me that the world is not ready but the world will NEVER be ready for change. Lets focus on making the letter appealing.

I love your energy. Thank you for support.

Well, a couple of things:

First, I have found that women of many ethnicities struggle to achieve healthy, long hair. This is not just a challenge relegated to black women. That's a point that needs to be made.

Second, it is important to reiterate that poor diet and overall lifestyle contributes to hair problems. Again, this is not an issue that only black women confront. However, the fact that there is an obesity epidemic among black women is quite telling.

Still, I think that if one were to visit any major city in the U.S. with majority-minority populations, I think one could easily find that more black women are growing long, healthy hair and adopting healthier habits. That point can be drilled home without mentioning LHCF.

Perhaps you can mention that there are helpful resources out there on health and hair care that more black women could take advantage of. Being armed with information on how to care for afro-textured hair might work and help to dispel the myths about black hair and growth.

To be honest it did get my down. Black women deserve more we wont get more recognition until we collectively decide that we are not afraid of what the world thinks. But everyone has their feelings. But its ok. I probably should not have shared this with everyone.

This works.

I think the other points are good too.

I agree totally with both of you... :yep:Yep, I tried to put it into words but you seem to have covered it:yawn:

I'm so sorry you are discourged but I learned a long time ago, that if I didn't want an opionion that may be different than mine don't post it here on LHCF.

As stated you have a very good idea but it sounds to me that you just wanted gammer, spelling correction and that will never happen here, NEVER. The ladies here will tell you what they think and then some.

It's a good letter and I do see a few typos, but I'll highlight those later.
I'm glad you are willing to compromise by leaving LHCF out of it. It's just that people are very mean and ugly and for many of us, this is a personal hobby.

I think you should definitely go to Macherieamor b/c she's a young, business owner with gorgeous hair. She can do some cross-promoting while she's at it. Sistaslick ofcourse is extremely knowledgeable. I think having people who are also natural w/ various textures show how they went from nothing to great lengths (Ekomba comes to mind). Get to PMing some folks after you send off the letter.

Good luck.

This is how I feel as well. I would by no mean try to discourage you. It is a wonderful idea but just consider certain repercussions.

I agree. I think you should contact some of those ladies. I'm sure they could help.

Re: OH YEA!

Not a grammatical error but "black women" should be kept the same way capitalizationwise.... so if you capitalize Black Women in one section, you should keep it the same in the other section and not make it "black women" (not capitalized)

Also, Tyra is a Black Woman (singular).

ETA: OK that is not part of the letter to send! :)

Well we don't have to say LHCF, we can say women from all around the US have techniques to grow hair or something like that. Maybe a few women could step up and say "Yeah, my name is FoxxyMama and this is my friend Hairluvr and we go way back and we love to grow long hair, these are some tips we've picked up"

  .........

I'm sorry. Please try not to feel that way. I am sure no one was downing you or your idea specifically. You know we are very protective of our LHCF. That's all.

prettyfaceANB, these ladies are only offering Constructive Criticism, no need to get down about it. It should be looked at like, "Hmmm...I didn't think of it that way." Personally, I agree with Bmore and the rest, LHCF doesn't need to be mentioned. We share waaay too much with each other, good times and bad. Great idea, but as previously mentioned, Tyra's show has turned into a dog and pony show and the last thing we want is for black women to be further ridiculed. :luv2:

.

I agree with this.

Dont get discouraged....you have a wonderful idea!!!!! Just think of this all as the "brainstorming process". So, lets keep the momentum going with this idea and push full steam ahead Pretty :yep:

I'm sorry prettyfaceAnB, didn't mean to rain on your parade. But the entertainment biz is a big part my husband's career. I'm privy to the inside uglyness. And I'm sorry,... but TV behind the scenes is: Foul, Ruthless,Treacherous, and SUPER RACIST, especially when black people are the subject matter. They love to take someone like you, who has good intentions and turn your initial idea it into a "Black Women's Hair Buffonery Parade" ratings winner. Just keep that in mind when you are writing your letter and submitting your idea. Good luck!
