Tuesday on Tyra....

i wanna see it. it made me so mad when that lady relaxed that 3 year old baby's hair. and also when one lady admitted to having her daughter mixed race so she would look better. smdh. thats so sad.

Okay ladies, I just sent Tyra a comment. And for all of you ladies that said you won't be watching because you'll be embarrassed...PLEASE watch. And if you don't like what you see....write her @ss and tell her about it. We can't let her get away with this stuff. I found the letter that I wrote to her last year. Here it is:

Hello. First of all, let me say that I LOVE the Tyra Show and the topics that are covered. I ESPECIALLY like the topics that hit the Black community. I watched the 2007 show that talked about beauty across all cultures. I also watched the 2008 show, 1st Annual State of the Black Women Union (or something like that).

I believe in the 2007 show, there was a part in the show when hair was being addressed. Tyra, girl you said something that REALLY disturbed me. You said something along the lines of women with Afro textured hair don't or can't grow long hair. And girl I'm here to tell you to do some research on that because you are SOOO WRONG!!

Okay, on to my show idea now. LOL!! Tyra, you should do a show on Black Hair or Black Hair and Self Image. It drives me absolutely insane to hear blacks say their hair can't grow long. It drives me absolutely insane to see little black girls with SEVERELY DAMAGED hair. It drives me absolutely insane to hear black people say, "you got good hair." WHAT DOES THAT MEAN???

There is a forum dedicated to helping Black women achieve long, healthy hair. That forum is www.longhaircareforum.com. Please go there and do research on growing your hair long. Not only can RELAXED sistas grow their hair long, but NATURAL sistas (like myself) can grow their hair long as well. We just all need to educate ourselves on proper hair care for our particular hair type. I am BEGGING you to be one of the FIRST to attempt to educate our sisters. We have to stop thinking that we have to be half white to have long or beautiful hair.

There are several ladies on this forum that a lot of us consider to be EXPERTS on growing hair long. Most of these women have waist length hair and beyond. I know that some of them would LOVE to be guest on your show and share what they know. I’ll be waiting for this topic to air.

TYRA...HELP US OUT!!!!!

After reading what I wrote, I guess she may have listened to PARTS of what I wrote but not all of it. She totally left off the HAIRCARE part. And here is what I just sent to her today:

Hello Tyra and/or producers. I have not seen the episode on "good hair" yet, because it doesn't air until Tuesday. I do hope that I'm not disappointed by it.

I wrote in about a year or two ago and suggested that Tyra do an episode educating black women how to care for their hair, be it relaxed, natural, etc. Unfortunately, I don't believe that has taken place yet. I wrote in after seeing an episode where Tyra suggested that the hair of black women don't grow as long as white women. BOY DO I DISAGREE.

I am writing again to ask Tyra to educate herself, and other black women on how to care for our hair and we WILL have hair down our backs just like other ethnicities. Our hair needs to be nurtured because it is extremely fragile. Misuse of it will cause it to not retain length. Not simply because we are black. Please check out some hair boards, such as www.longhaircareforum.com. There you will see tons of black women, relaxed and natural, with waist and tailbone length hair. Something that is the unthinkable to many people.

As I said, I haven't seen the "good hair" show, so I don't know if it is an attempt to show people that your hair doesn't have to be straight or losely curled in order to be "good hair." All healthy hair is “good hair.” I hope that it doesn't add to the many stereotypical views that go along with African American hair.

Tyra, you believe that it is your mission to help young girls. You had shows on body image and showing your girls how to take care of themselves. Please show our young African American girls how to care for their hair and that black hair DOES grow.

I look forward to hearing from you.

BRAVO!!! :clapping::clapping::clapping: It would be nice if she did check out the site and maybe even have a LHCF guest on the show or just mention the site! :yep:

There's a lady from Nappturality that is a guest on the show.

If you go to NP's main hair forum you can check out what she says.

Thanks for sharing the link.....It made me cringe when the mother was giving her 3 year-old a relaxer....I might be a little dramatic, but it almost made me cry, you should never put that harsh of a chemical on a baby, shame on her.

oh, tyra...i think i have to watch it now that everyone on every hairboard known to man is blowing it up.

i wasn't going to watch it cuz tyra sucks at "serious" topics. but i'll want to be able to talk **** about it later...so...

I think Tyra is good purely for entertainment purposes ONLY, and that's if you can take her. She isn't a Mensa candidate. If you want some REAL knowledge...get a book! Go to a hair forum because hell if a weaved up, no hairline having, raggedy cornrow wearing woman is going to try to school me???

Yeah RIGHT!!!

no, it's not too dramatic. i just saw it and when they were washing it out she was crying saying "ow, my eye". can you imagine relaxer run-off going into a 3 year old's eye? why?

i am also going to tune in to watch the show.
I wasn't surprised that a woman is putting a relaxer at age 3 to a girl..
please, i grew up seeing that so i actually thought it was natural to do that

While the topic seems interesting and I would love to hear how other black people feel about our hair, I really don't want it to be covered on tyra's show. I feel like all she does is make a mockery of things to get responses from the audience and all it does is end up embarrassing our race.

I just saw that clip, I cannot believe the 3 year old girl getting her hair relaxed, what a shame. I, personally, am surprised - 3 is too d**n young!

Notice she has cornrows for this episode, whereas on almost every other episode, she has a long, straight lacefront? lol I wonder how she'll address THAT.

I normally don't watch tyra bc of the ignorance and buffonery...it always seems as if she exposes an issue, but offers no solution (teenage pregnancies; skin blaching etc.). I would love for her to address an issue and offer some COA. I will definitely watch this show so I can write in with my concerns. I don't understand how someone with damaged hair (IMO; don't know if it's true, i'm just going off what it looks) can give me any advice or moderate a discussion on healthy vs. unhealthy (the good vs. bad debate because it's really a matter of healthy vs. damaged and nothing more) hair care practices.... smh...what people won't do for audience...something strange for some change i guess...

I may need to be very far from my tv if it is true there will be someone on there admitting to giving a 3 year old a relaxer. :perplexed:wallbash:

Ooh I want to watch it now...If anyone has a link please send it to me after the show has aired. I bet it's going to be a good one.

To the cornrows thing - She just took her wig off that's all. She probably just wears it braided under the wig. Whenever she's not wearing her wig or weave she usually wears her hair in cornrows. She has taken the wig off for other things on the show - segments/experiments, etc. She has also shown pictures but IDK why she just doesn't wear it down. You can never tell how long it is. She does have edges and a nape though unlike Naomi Campbell and some of the rest of them. I don't think her hair is damaged even though most people believe everybody who wears a wig or weave MUST be bald headed.

I read over at NP that her hair is natural though (Which actually makes sense. I mean why relax your hair if you're going to have a wig on top of it all the time anyway). I usually wear weaves when I'm at my busiest. If I can't find time or energy to do my own hair natural hair once a week, it doesn't seem that farfetched that she can't either. She probably doesn't even know what to do with it but braid it straight back. A lot of people think that having natural hair means either lock it or wear a fro or braids. Some people don't realize that there are a lot of other styles/options out there too.

I'm curious to see what she's going to say about it too. She'll probably say something about she has to keep up a certain image in the industry. Just like the rest of the celebs I'm sure she wears wigs/weaves to cut down on damage to her hair from styling mainly because the industry is all about image. I think people fail to realize that even though it is the Tyra Banks show she still has to answer to somebody. She doesn't have the final say in everything.

And while I like Tyra I do agree that she just kind of addresses issues and then the show goes off. She never really goes into solutions or resolutions. She just offers the guests help for whatever issue and she doesn't even do that all the time. Some days I can't bother to watch her. Some of those topics make me go :perplexed I understand what she's trying to do but she just seems to fall short a lot of the time. But I guess it's a start. She does bring up issues that nobody else on tv is talking about right now. Rome wasn't built in a day.

Thanks for telling us that she just took her wig off. I was about to light her up because I noticed that, too. :lachen:

Loved your post. You made some very good points.

Tyra is so infantile and self centered. She tries to do everything that her guests do. She's always like, "I can do that!" or "Yeah, I used to do that." and I'm like: "Tyra you are a beautiful and successful woman! You don't need to ingratiate or act like a clown to be noticed or liked."

Sheesh!

I'll be watching it...
I don't agree with a 3 yo getting a relaxer but if you are going to give her one, don't wash her hair over her eyes...

WORD i wanted to drop kick her. fine, perm her hair, but doesn't common sense tell you that it can RUN INTO HER EYES!!! clearly the mother doesn't know what the hell she is doing.

wow. i'm watching now, and i wanna slap the misled girl that says naturals only wash their hair every 3 weeks. someone lied to her.

and i'm so saddened to hear the girls repeating what they have learned through their parents about 'good' and 'bad' hair. i'm not understanding why a parent would teach a child that their natural self is not good enough.

I'm just posting this here in case someone subscribed to this thread and would want this info
