Hi everybody. My question for naturals or texturized heads is what do you do about single strand knots. i get them all the time and i trim/dust my ends every month because of this im not getting very much growth which is leaving me discouraged. TIA for and ideas or suggestion /images/graemlins/wink.gif

I've had this problem FOREVER! /images/graemlins/mad.gif

I've tried hot oil treatments and different conditioners but I think the problem can be remedied by mechanical means, not chemical. So, I'm testing out braiding or twisting my hair at night. I'm very lazy /images/graemlins/crazy.gif and prefer to just loosely wrap my hair and cover it with a silk scarf or plastic cap but I'm going to give this experiment a good try and see what the results are.

Pray for my abnormally lazy butt. /images/graemlins/look.gif

I just don't worry about them. I will trim them if and when I press my hair. But otherwise I've just stopped worrying about it.

I don't know how they can be avoided.

Hi Gotshuz /images/graemlins/wave.gif

My natural hair is very curly/coily. I wear my hair down, in shake n go's 50% of the time. Cuz of this, my hair will curl around itself & "knot up" in a split sec. /images/graemlins/mad.gif So my remedy is to keep my hair soaked in either conditioner (Pantene great for slip) &/or butters (homemade shea/mango/coconut). This truly keeps the "knots" from forming...& if they do form, my hair has enough "slip" for easy detangling /images/graemlins/cool.gif

I used to get them often but for the past year now i barely have any. I attribute this to keeping the last couple of inches of my hair protected with hair dressings containing shea butter and not wearing my hair loose all the time.

for a month or so...i wasnt getting them...what was i not doing...lettting my hair stay in one style...such as box braids or twists..i have box braids in for this week and i have knots at the ends....when im doing a new style everyday and brushing and combing daily i dont get them...i dont cut my knots off either and try not to yank them...

I have had knots all of my life, no matter what I did to my hair. I stopped worrying about them over a decade ago. I do agree that protective styles at night can help reduce them.

it seems to be the nature of my hair when i wore it out...therefore, i wore more protective styles.

now, i have decided to loc my hair and that will no longer be a worry to me. but i did read this bit of info last night on naani.com....

If you have ever had natural hair for an extensive period of time, did you ever on occassion peer very closely at your tresses? I guarantee you'd find tiny knots down a single hair shaft. But where do these little knots come from and how do you prevent them? You don't. Our hair is built to wave and curl onto itself. Simply changes in humidity can cause your hair to relax its curl pattern or tighten up at a moments notice. These subtle changes in natural hair can cause individual strands to curl on themselves and tiny knots to develop.

I've found that when I do co-washes it really cuts down on the knots for me, I have mega thick hair. Also when I wash my hair I do it in sections and with gobs of conditioner on each section I take a wide tooth comb and comb through. I have a shower attachment so I Let the water stream through my hair and gently comb thru from the ends up. Works for me! Gets rid of the tangles and my hair is mega soft and easy to style.

Check out my album and you'll see how thick my hair is! I am texturized with 2 1/2 months of new growth and I don't have problems with knots/tangling.

I'm a bad girl, if I find them close to the ends of my strand then I just pull them off. I'm trying to stop but it can be addictive... just watching tv and 'pluck', all gone. That is why I try to refrain from touching my hair after it has been styled.

I stopped worrying about them also. i only have a few so it is not a huge problem. When I come across one that is problemsome, I will snip it. Ususally my knots are at the tip so I don't lose much length.

I have the same problem, only mine knots on to other hairs making one bigger knot. I haven't figured out what to do with it yet tho
