Hello! I was wondering if anyone has experienced this and what is the best solution. As I was detangling my hair awhile ago I noticed that some strands of hair had knots along the strand. I was clipping some ends and I could see the little knots in the strands. Are these single strand knots or splits? I know if it's splits I have to cut them which is what I did . But what can I do to avoid this, because I am worried that leaving them might cause damage and no growth. I have noticed this for awhile now, but I ignored them. But I have an area of my head where my hair grows extremely slow and this is where I found most of the little knots. I want this area to grow out so it can catch up with the rest of my hair. I do cowash every other day and I always wear buns. My hair is getting super thick and it's growing so I'm thinking about cutting cowashing down to twice a week because the manipulation is just too much. I'm wondering if cowash is too much is causing the knots? Any solutions/advice? Thanks

I get single strand knots especially since I am natural. For me it's a common thing for me to see them especially since my coils are small. I will either snip them off or try to wear styles that stretch out my hair to help reduce the knots. Also too much manipulation I think can increase the knots occurring more.

Are you natural? Relaxed? Transitioning,etc.?

How often do you co-wash?

well imho, (at the bolded) as a natural I have gotten single strand knots. Sometimes, you can see a knot with a split. The difference? A knot is just that a knot, but a split, is where you see 1 single strand, that has split into 2.

This is where search and destroy's come in handy. You can take that strand of hair and try to remove the knot gently with a pin. OR clip it off. Now I have length goals, so I won't snip them, I just try to avoid them all together.

For me, this begins with gentle finger detangling, then pre pooing with coconut oil.
Then I detangle GENTLY and slowly with my modified denman. If I encounter knots or tangles while finger detangling, then I gently remove them or as much of hte hair from the knot as I can with my fingers then get out my trusty pin and get the rest. This has removed many knots without damage caused at all.

Also, I have noticed that when I upped my water intake, and hair moisture/sealing game, the knots also stopped.......HTH, maybe someone else can share what they do too.

Thank you for the response. I am natural, and I cowash 3 times a week.

aside from cowashing, do you deep condition and seal the moisture (aka water) AFTER the deep conditioning?

What has helped me combat ssk/splits is after washing, to use either the kimmaytube leave-in, or spritz with water or a water based moisturizer and seal it with some type of oil/butter based product, protective styling, and gentle detangling.

I usually deep condition prior to cowash, and after the cowash I apply giovanni direct leave-in and seal with a thick butter or unpetroleum jelly. I protective style most of the time due to job cuz my hair can't be below my collar so I am always in a bun until I get home and take it out. I think it could be my detangling methods also, because I try to be gentle most of the time but there are definitely times when I am in a rush.
