First, let me start by saying that I've been a lurker but I am now a member & I'm glad to have women who's hair I can look up to.
I've seen a lot of threads and posts where women get really upset or sensitive to the fact that people think their hair isn't real or they continuously get asked if they're mixed and I've seen "reports" that say it's genetically impossible for black women to grow long hair...and I just want to remind everyone that not everyone knows of this site.
I've been guilty of thinking that all long-haired black girls were mixed and if they said they weren't mixed then they were lying. And I've also been guilty of feeling the back of girls heads searching for tracks. The fact is that I haven't had any hair role models. I knew all of 6 black girls in my whole HS career to have long hair, and 4 of them were mixed. Anytime before then, the only girls I saw who had long hair WERE mixed which made me come to the conclusion that you must be mixed to have long hair.
Yes, it's ignorance, but that's all I knew. None of my family has extremely long hair. Long to me, believe it or not, WAS APL. If I ever mentioned wanting hair reaching the middle of my back, I was told it wasn't a possibilty. I saw so many "reports" that said that genetically black women couldn't grow their hair long. So, I'm really glad I've found this site to see women who have long hair (mixed or not, it doesn't matter). So, ladies, if women are questioning your hair, they're curious, and want to see themselves in your shoes. So try to encourage and tell them that they too can grow long hair instead of being mad. Take it as a compliment.
Ok, I'm done. whew.
