EDIT*

Ladies I just want to know which combination do you think of when it comes to the phrase "jungle fever".

I never use that term or think of it when describing interracial couples. I guess if I had to it would be black/white. But its really an outdated term, used it in 5th grade, im 5 years post college now:spinning:

I hate that term, it is so degrading, what about Moses when he married Zipproah, did they have jungle fever? You like what you like.

Just a quick tip...

You might want to search some of the topics here before jumping right on in... there are actually a LOT of ladies here who are involved with or married to non-black men... but I think because of that, we don't see a big deal about being attracted to someone white, Asian or Hispanic...

We like who we like, and don't need to put a name on it. :)
ITA w/this:yep:

I don't think the term is that bad. If it's used in a lighthearted sense, then it shouldn't really be an issue. If it's used negatively then I see the problem. But in my experience it's always been something funny, cute, and lighthearted. It's not like we're calling people "****** lovers." And like someone else said, it doesn't just apply to Africans or African americans. There are dark skinned individuals from jungles of South America, the Caribbean, India, the Philippines, etc.

Nowadays though, my friends and I call it "black plague." 'Black' isn't derrogatory but someone is bound to get touchy over the 'plague' part, I assume.

I think of Spike Lee and his lousy filmmaking! :spinning: And Stevie Wonder should be tarred and feathered for making that stupid song.

Oh No you didn't! Moses like Zipproah was BLACK! No interracial marriage there at all. :perplexed

I put any interracial couple. I think most people may just think white woman and black man because thats how the term was presented in the movie.

WoW! I've heard the term before, seen the movie, heard the song but never, ever let it bother me that much. Life is too short to waste time on labels... derogatory or otherwise. :ohwell:

I don't think of any of the choices provided. I find the term offensive and demeaning.

Though Spike Lee may have not created the term, I kind of wanted to kick his butt over it (as his movie made the term more mainstream).

According to the urban dictionary:

Jungle fever is-

1. A white person dating a person of color.
2. An inter-racial relationship, namely between a white person and a black person.
3. When a non-black person is atracted sexually to black people. Originally it was used for when a white woman dates black men, but now it could refer to a white man who thinks black women are hot and wants to date them.

A Stevie Wonder song about black man/white woman love.
"She's gon black guy crazy
He's gone white girl hazy
They got jungle fever"--Stevie Wonder

There's more, so here's the link:

And don't feel bad. I never thought it was a derogatory term either. It was meant to be funny in the movie. :look:

Just an interesting FYI (that I wasn't aware of at the time of the movie's release):

Spike Lee's father is (or was) remarried to a caucasian woman. Apparently Spike did NOT like this woman, and did NOT approve of their "relationship."

I've also heard Spike speak in interviews about "Jungle Fever"...he has a VERY negative view on "racial mixing." Given what I've read and seen, I feel that his use of term was intentional and meant in a derogatory sense. He seems to see individuals involved in interracial relationships as fetish victims, as opposed to sincerely being interested in the other person, attracted to them, in love, etc.

So that's part of what I base my opinion on. But again, just my opinion (that he intended the term to be derogatory, etc.) I understand everyone's opinion on this may vary.

I've never liked the term. The word "jungle" is associated with something wild or uncivilized, and "fever" is tied to illness. Saying someone has "jungle fever" implies that they are sick with some feral incomprehensible jungle disease. Like malaria or sleeping sickness or dengue or something. It implies that anyone in an interracial relationship is incapable of rational thought. It's insulting. It mocks and undermines relationships, so I never use it.

Hi Bene,
I just wanted to compliment the way you broke that down, and explained how and why it can be deemed as offensive. I completely agree--very well done!

Why just black and white?

Last time I checked, there were jungles in S. America and Asia.

Honestly I do not know what Op was thinking when they started this thread. Anyways I see they are not a member anymore...

She was probably new to interracial dating and was excited by the thought of it... I get the impression that her relationships were not serious, so she was trying to express how "cool" or "different" it was by using a term that most IR daters actually find offensive.

That's my attempt at mind reading!!!
