Is anyone against going to Dominican salons?

i've kinda decided against. im wondering why people are so anxious to try dominican salons, particularily this '' dominican blow out ''.. when regular AA salons do blow outs as well.. just dosen't sound as exotic lol.. and i think it's safe to assume they don't use as much heat.. but, god forbid you go to a regular salon. they'll jack your hair up!! but the dominican blow out is AWESOME.. LOL.

I have been going to Domonican Salons for over 17 years, and When I lived in NYC there was a DS salon on Merrick BLVD in Laurelton and a Hairstylist named Denise was the BOMB! I had came to the salon with APL hair, Pregnant we both were, I left with my hair at MBL with Several Hair cuts in between. NOw when I go to AA salons, I don't get the same effect as with the DS. One time (AA salon) the girl sat there for 20 minutes telling me oh, that isn't healthy so I won't do it. I said I don't care if it isn't healthy, I want it. Come to find out she didn't know how to do a blow out, (even though I asked when I scheduled the APPT) so That pee'd me off. I will continue to go to the DS when I want a good blow out. OTHERwise, I am a hairstylist and went to Cosmetology school also, and I am the best at my hair. SO, I VOTE ME! LOL, Plus my hair loves me and the tender love an care I give it.

I am sure most of us Vote for ourselves. We know what our hair needs and if we don't that is why LHCF is here, so that we can continue to learn. Personally yes I went to school But so much changes, products change like night and day. So this forum keeps me abreast of things. Plus LHCF members we try different taboo things that actually work. So hey!!! Enough babbling sorry!!!!:wallbash:

Im relatively new and i read some threads about it, i thought it was a really healthy thing to do for my hair, i was wishing that i lived in the US. Then i watched a video on youtube :nono::nono::nono: it was not good at all. The amount of heat that they use is unecessary. When i was younger the hot comb got my hair looking relaxed straight and then i would be back to a fro on wash day.

They can be Ok, Just so long as your just getting a Rollerset, no blowout, and bring your own products, and be very stern about how you want them to handle your hair, like any other stylist.

I used to go to one spot when I was relaxed, and only let this one hairdresser blow my hair out. I would tell her not too straight and she wouldn't put the blower straight on my hair.
Now that I'm natural, there's NO WAY I would let them do my hair. I'm a straight 4B, and they wouldn't take the time to detangle and blow out my hair properly. For this, I go to an AA salon. The stylist does a great job, my flatironed hair lasts for 2 weeks, and when I wash it reverts with no problem.

I agree with a lot of u ladies when u say it depends on the stylist. I used to go to this DS in the bronx, my chick Yaya would hook me up, she's the one the put me on to lye relaxers and she helped me begin transitioning to natural. Eventually she had to go back to DR so here I am thinking I can go to another one in the salon and the broad touched my hair like it was poo! So yea it's definitely the stylist, I go to a DS in Harlem now and one in brooklyn they don't give me any problems as long as im clear with what I want, I dont like when they blow ur hair out starting from when its wet cus thats a smooth 40 bucks right there and too much heat, so I make them rollerset everytime! I like AA salons but they put to much wax or whatever it is when they press ur hair and I like my hair bouncy if i'm wearing it out.

My last visit to a Dominican salon was a positive one. The stylist gently detangled my hair and the blow dryer was not too hot. This was the first time that I didn't experience a very hot blow dryer. My sister also got her hair rollerset and blown out and she also commented that her stylist used moderate heat with her blowdryer. This was our first visit at this particular salon, so yes it does depend on the techniques of the particular stylist.

Just came from one today. I dont let them relax my hair anymore because I think a lot of them overlap a lot. Today I saw one of the stylists apply the relax almost all the way down to the ends:nono:

I don't thinkI'll be going to them again. The heat is too much and they ALWAYS applied relaxer to my hair from the roots to the tips. So now some parts of my hair is overprocessed and breaking off. I also have spilt ends up the wazoo.

and I used to smell of burnt hair after I left the DS

Dominicans may try to push tons of heat on you, but boy do they know how to trim your ends/give you layers! To avoid any potential hubbub, I relax my own hair, neutralize, condition, etc. and I go to my stylist with a head full of conditioner so that all she has to do is rinse it out, apply leave in, and roller set. I only go for trims, or if I am trying to stretch and need my roots blown out.

I took my daughter to a Dominican shop the beginning of this year. The lady said she charges $25 for a wash and blowout. When she touched my daughters 2 inches of 4b new growth (the rest relaxed) she went up to $45 and $55 with a deep conditioner. She said she had to pull the hair more because of those 2 inches of new growth. My daughter said the heat on her scalp was painful. Her hair was swinging for two weeks but we have not returned because I felt she discriminated against us by charging more. I also wanted to purchase a product from her that was $11.00 everywhere else and she was charging me $19.00 Deep down I felt she was trying to discourage me from returning. If that was the case, she was succesful.

You definitely have to bring your own condish if you don't want to pay extra. I used to go to Dominican Salons and I loved it. I never let them do my relaxers. I just have them blow out my roots and I love it. My hair thrived. In between visits, I did my own rollersets. I haven't been in about two years, but when I get back on track financially, I plan to give them my money again. They are going to help me get to APL. My hair was growing in pretty nice between regular exercise and then going to DS.

It depends on the stylist and what's being done. I go for my touch-ups and bring my own relaxer. I've been going to the same woman since I was 16. I used to get blow outs but that broke off my hair. Finally, the sides of my hair are more than 3 inches long and I don't have the same level of scalp irritation, since I stopped getting the blow outs over a year ago. I am against getting blow outs very often, unless you care more about style than length. Even my own stylist doesn't blow out her own hair.

Also, you have to tell them what you want. Most assume you want stick straight hair. If you don't, tell them! Also, if you think they're overprocessing you, then start acting like your scalp is burning and ask to be rinsed, lol.

There are good and bad ones out there, just like with AA salons. The major pro to me about the Dominicans is that when I get a relaxer, I'm in and out in about 3 hours. At AA/West Indian salons, I was there for at last 5-6 hours.

Whaaaaa?? They actually can do it from when it's wet?? :perplexed
Now THAT sounds scary.

You are soooooooo right! My Dominican stylist is the only one I allow to trim my hair. He never takes off too much (ONLY what's necessary) and it looks so fly when it's done! When I get a little past BSL, he is the only I'm going to allow to trim it regularly.

:yep: :yep: :yep: They really respect your time more. And the only reason it's THAT long (3 hours) is b/c I spend at least an hour and some change under the dryer (DC and rollerset)

Basically. Y'all act like regular black hairdressers don't try to push naturals to relax or complain about hair being too thick, too nappy, etc. Many of them don't like or don't know how to deal with natural hair either. Most black hairdressers will not touch my hair with a 10 foot pole because I don't have a relaxer. Some of the African braid shops don't like to do natural hair either. That's fine with me though, I'll just keep my money in my pocket and my hair on my head. :look:

im relaxed and there were some that turned me away talking about its to thick and i need to put the relaxer all over.:/

Basically! I know there are AA salons who do that as well, but they're few and far between up here and the ones that can do it are out of my current price range at the moment, LOL.

My experience was pretty positive. The total time at the salon was fairly short (but I got there before they opened because all of the Dominican salons I know of don't do reservations). But I must admit that the heat for the blowout was INTENSE! The lady that was doing my hair couldn't speak English so I wasn't able to ask her to turn the heat down. My hair did come out great, but because of the high heat I wouldn't recommend going too often.
