Is anyone against going to Dominican salons?

I'm not against them. But I am against them coming anywhere near my head with a blow dryer or a relaxer.

Wash and set is fine.

Wow!! at the pelo malo comment. I've never had a DB.. don't think i'll be getting one either.. too much heat for my hair:nono:, plus I'm a 4a/b hair type.. and I know quite a bit of espanol..

I understand the pelo malo comments makes everybody mad. But don't front because we know some AA stylist will tell you your hair is nappy too and needs a touch up. Then they will burn you with the marcel irons.:lachen:

Basically. Y'all act like regular black hairdressers don't try to push naturals to relax or complain about hair being too thick, too nappy, etc. Many of them don't like or don't know how to deal with natural hair either. Most black hairdressers will not touch my hair with a 10 foot pole because I don't have a relaxer. Some of the African braid shops don't like to do natural hair either. That's fine with me though, I'll just keep my money in my pocket and my hair on my head. :look:

this is generally how i feel. i did experience a little heat damage the last time i went in for a blowout but the most damage i experienced was to my temper... i get pissed by the comments and the sulking and sucking of teeth i get as they detangle and blowout my hair... i would just take solace in the $15 price though instead of cussing them out...

do these stylists really think that americans know such little spanish that they can't translate "pelo malo?"

OMGoodness!!! It happened to you too:nono:.This woman acted as though she was about to get to thumpin' with my hair as she detangled it and sent entirely the WRONG message for my becoming a returning client. I won't lie, I walked out of there feeling discriminated against to the WORST degree with all of the snide comments, frowns, and pushes for a relaxer. She was even so rude as to say, "We don't press here!" I was like, "oh, that's fine because I just want a blowout. Is that a problem for you?" To this she shouted something in Spanish to her shampoo girl as they both began inspecting each strand of my hair in dismay.

I don't care what no one says, some (emphasis on the word "some") Dominicans really have a problem with 4a/b hair. Point being, you couldn't PAY me to spend .50 to return to any of their shops.

I am against it, but not just for heat reasons. I refuse to give my money to anyone who would stand over me saying "pelo malo" and try to pressure me into a relaxer. I know how they feel about 4b hair, so I wouldn't even waste my time.

All I can say is WOW!!!

As for me I always thought that teh Dominican hair salon was funny business. $17 for a hairdo...come on now, I'd rather pay $35/$40.

I've never been, but was contemplating it when I was stretching a relaxer. I was too afraid to go through with it because of all the comments that I have heard about the heat. :ohwell:
After reading all the comments, I can't say that I will be going to one any time soon. I am relaxed, but after a good stretch, I have a good amount of newgrowth and I am 4b. I understand a good bit of Spanish, but the attitude alone would be enough for me to take my 4b business elsewhere or better yet, to my own house and use the methods that I've learned here! :yep:

i wouldnt say im against it but my hair is already fine and thin so it doesnt take much for them to burn my hair out. i rather do my hair myself. but if i ever needed a fast rollerset then heck yea i would go to them. but they cant do anything more than a rollerset for me.

I actually went today and they had a woman who just did natural hair.. she was great... she used heat protectant, was gentle, and combed from the bottom with conditioner in it.. the pic is in my avatar

Thank You!!!And then press your hair and fry it and leave you without the bounce:lachen:

I have only gone to Dominican Salons 'cause am dominican and thats it buttttttt.....The heat is bad....If anyone had a bad experience is probably the stylist itself...I have gone to a lot of good ones....

I have never had a bad experience where i had a setback because i say what i want and i get it....

Dominicans have had a lifetime of good hair habits besides the heat which is equally damaging if not worse than pressing the hair at AA salons!
Also we don't relax as much...My stylist actually tells me i do it too many times and i go anywhere from 12-14 weeks.

They Deep condition every week
Roller sets ( is a sin any other way:lachen:)
and many others...

Same here! I'm Dominican and not all Dominican salons are created equal. I don't let the stylist blow fry my hair. I speak up when its way too hot. I've also been to AA salons and I have to agree, pressing your hair is no better. I do my own hair.

If you can find one that speaks English then maybe that will work better for you. I notice that many of the American women (any color) that go in are kinda paranoid and think that they're talking about them, but in reality they're not. I got lazy for a few years and let others take care of my hair for me. Damn it I'm my best Dominican stylist ever LOL

I went to them regularly but it depends on which one you go to. There was one in Brooklyn, NY that I went to that use heat with the dryer but did not blow out your roots but her rollersetting skills were excellent so the hair was straight. However, when I moved I went to one that dryer would be hot, blow out the hair(steam coming from it) and then, flatiron at 450---well my hair went from full SL to earlength. Not to mention that this person was scissor happy. So then it is a problem. But it depends on their techniques.

I won't write off all but it depends on the person.

Amen to that! By the way, they feel the same about 3b/3c hair too.

I'm not against them, my AA stylist leaves me with the same bounce and swang, but for 35-40 dollars. I don't like how fine my hair looks when I get blowouts though, so I'll probably stick with a rollerset.

Exactly. Went to Anabelle's in nyc on lower east side (really close to the village where I live and go to college) and she to me NOT to relax. I'm 4a mostly a little 3c thrown in for measure. Now I didn't want to but I was complaining and saying sometimes I want to and she was like "no mami!" and went on to say I was doing the right thing and that's why my hair was so healthy. So I think it depends on the person.

i've kinda decided against. im wondering why people are so anxious to try dominican salons, particularily this '' dominican blow out ''.. when regular AA salons do blow outs as well.. just dosen't sound as exotic lol.. and i think it's safe to assume they don't use as much heat.. but, god forbid you go to a regular salon. they'll jack your hair up!! but the dominican blow out is AWESOME.. LOL.

You have to find the right Dominican salon and it helps if you know how to speak Spanish. I have 4B natural hair and the Dominican Salon that I go to, I have gone to since 1999 and the same lady does my hair and does it beautifully. Don't make the mistake of making one person's bad experience the norm. I will suggest that if you go, only go for the rollerset and let them lightly blow your roots. The heat from the blow dryer is not for the faint of heart!

I think they're just cheaper. That's why I go. At least, in NY. Carla when I lived in l.a was in AA salon, was AA like me, and reasonably priced and I went to her FOREVER. Would still be there if I was in L.A. I go where people know what they're doing and listen to what I want or I do it myself.

my stepdaughter's hair is coming out...she's learning at a tender, young age to stop letting them butcher her hair. the heat is entirely too much and they are too rough, i don't let them do mine.

Sigh. I agree with you I really am itching to go in a week or so. This is something I have been debating about recently.

I would really love to go to Dominican salon but I have only had one good experience. I lost contact with that stylist and she is no longer working at that salon.

All my other experiences are like others have said before. Too much heat, not enough care, fine toothed combs, and complaining about my natural hair. The thing is I feel like it's almost as if I am taking a MAJOR risk walking into any dominican salon (recommended or not) and letting them do my hair.

But......................... I love the body and bounce that I just cannot seem to get straightening my own hair at home. :(

I dont let them relax my hair. And I hardly get blowouts. I just let them wash and set and then wrap. No heat and no chemicals.

I wouldn't go to a black stylist who felt that way either. I've been to a great black stylist who is familiar with natural hair (she pressed my hair for a friend's wedding), and she didn't say one negative word about my hair. She never mentioned a relaxer, either. If I ever decide to get my hair done again, she will be getting my money.:yep:

^^I also have a problem with patronizing people (Dominican or non-Dominican) that make rude/unprofessional comments about my hair.

The last stylist (an African American stylist) that made comments about my hair practices as being "stupid" lost me as a client forever.

^^This is what I was considering doing. I wonder how long it would take for my hair to dry in their shop from a rollerset? When I tried it at home it took an hour and 45 minutes :ohwell:

We don't have Dominican shops in Chicago but Egyptian hair salons but they follow the same concept of the extreme heat application. I went there in 1998 to get my hair straighten, I did that three weeks straight and my hair broke off. I had to wear braids for 6 months to get my hair healthy again. I haven't straighten my hair since then, too scared. However, I'm having a beautican friend help me do your ponytail rollerset in March. I hope it works on my natural hair if not I refuse to straighten with a flat iron, blow drier or hot comb, I was to traumatized by that event 10 years ago.

I would agree. That's why I love my stylists. Before I let them even touch my head I talked to them, asked them questions, and expressed my concerns. If they didn't seem like they knew what they were talking about, or answered my questions to my liking they would not be touching my hair.

And I don't want anybody coming near my head with a pressing comb. :nono: I didn't have any bad experiences at the Dominican Salons when I went relaxed or natural (with the exception of the one time the black shampoo girl tangled up my weave so bad I had to remove it) so just like with AA stylists there are some good ones and some bad ones. You can easily tell them, not so much heat, it's too hot, I only want my roots blown, etc. The only thing I ever had them tell me when I was relaxed (and anywhere from 3-6 months post) was you need perm mami or you need trim. And at the time, I did and got my hair blown out because I couldn't deal with the roots myself anymore. The blowout would buy me some time. They didn't act nasty about it or complain. They didn't have a hard time doing my hair either and it always turned out nice.

I think it will take approximately 30-40 minutes, they have more powerful dryers. Quite personally I think that after your are done under the dyer, bounce. The more and more I think about it, the blowdrying after the rollerset is hell. I can't reiterate it enough that it is not for the faint of heart.

Nope. Just don't go all the time. I try to stretch to 14 weeks, so I go once every 6 weeks and then (after the 2nd visit) go to my regular (Jamaican) stylist for my touch up/rollerwrap. I just loveeeeee Dominican Blowouts though. . .I don't think I'll ever give them up. As long as I wrap my hair, the style lasts a good week and a half.

Since I airdry other than those 3 salon visits, it's not a big deal. However, if I used heat every week or 2 regularly, I'd definitely think twice.

This was funny, I love Dominican Salons. I haven't had success with AA salons w/my rollersets or doobies. I am simple and like a wrapped type of look with a bump at the ends. I have been to a few AA salons and their BlowOUts are nothing compared to DS blowouts. I personally believe any disrespect is wrong to whom ever. You can suggest things in a tactful way, and if not you see what the person wants. Not insult them with you have bad hair. Alot of the ones I see have thick hair as well!
