Is anyone against going to Dominican salons?

If so, why?

I've been wanting to try one out but I'm afraid of the heat from the blow dryer. Has anyone had a bad experience at the Domincan salon before or lost progress as a result of going?

yep they burned my hair....i didnt know until i wanted to do a wash and go, and of course the last 2 inches of my hair was stick straight  Never again :nono:

No problems here. Just be very specific about what you want. I only let them blow my roots, never the entire length of my hair.

Yes, I am against it. I feel they use way too much heat for me. I recently went to a salon had DS type of blowout. My hair had a lot of bounce and swing. I know Kathy May recently went to a new dominican salon around our way and had a good experience.

I am against it, but not just for heat reasons. I refuse to give my money to anyone who would stand over me saying "pelo malo" and try to pressure me into a relaxer. I know how they feel about 4b hair, so I wouldn't even waste my time.

I don't want to say that I'm against it because people have to make their own choice...but I would never go to them again .

In the past when I had relaxed hair I went to them a few times. The heat on the hair was ridiculous and tortorous. I could actually feel my scalp burning.

The last time I went to them my hair came out so bone straight that I couldn't stand it. Even when I had relaxed hair I never liked that bone straight look but I know many of us do .

One of my friends did bi-weekly visits to them and her hair grew to BSL but she eventually had to cut it off because her scalp started rebelling from the heat . She now has a chin-length bob.

Even my friends that are not into hair care and know nothing about LHCF say that it's way too much heat. If they are concerned about the heat, then that tells me something.

I went to a Dominican salon a few times. I have no need to return. They do use a lot of HOT (opps, I mean SUPER HOT heat).

I use to go to a Domi. salon; these were my gripes:
  • mega heat from the blowfryer :nono:
  • I'd come in with 3 months of NG and they come at it with a ratail comb
  • They'd relax the heck outta my hair, after a touch-up I'd be left with a lifeless black puddle on my head
  • The language barrier; none of the stylists spoke English. If I wanted someone to translate I'd have to speak to a barber or one of the stylists children. :perplexed

I have only gone to Dominican Salons 'cause am dominican and thats it buttttttt.....The heat is bad....If anyone had a bad experience is probably the stylist itself...I have gone to a lot of good ones....

I have never had a bad experience where i had a setback because i say what i want and i get it....

Dominicans have had a lifetime of good hair habits besides the heat which is equally damaging if not worse than pressing the hair at AA salons!
Also we don't relax as much...My stylist actually tells me i do it too many times and i go anywhere from 12-14 weeks.

They Deep condition every week
Roller sets ( is a sin any other way:lachen:)
and many others...

this is generally how i feel. i did experience a little heat damage the last time i went in for a blowout but the most damage i experienced was to my temper... i get pissed by the comments and the sulking and sucking of teeth i get as they detangle and blowout my hair... i would just take solace in the $15 price though instead of cussing them out...

do these stylists really think that americans know such little spanish that they can't translate "pelo malo?"

That is absolutely rude calling people "pelo malo" unfortunately is a part of culture that we all would like to change where kinky hair is looked down upon.

Also, Most dominican stylist i know cannot handle hair 4type hair in its natural state....I believe to get this hair straight it needs to be pressed (and they don't use these tools)....the blow dryer is not enough thats why they may suggest relaxing.

I'm not against dominican salons, but I only get my roots blown and I am very specific regarding heat. I also had to go to a few of them before I found the "one". Speaking enough Spanish to let them know I can understand them is also a plus. I have never had any of them come at me about bad hair either, now that would cause a serious problem.

ironically the best hair straightening i've gotten has been with a blow dryer at the dominican spot near my house... my hair is a natural 4B but comes out as straight as a relaxer! i did notice a few strands that didn't revert after my last visit in june '08 and that freaked me out enough that i haven't been back...

but they do a great job and as long as i ignore the comments they treat my hair the same way that i do! they detangle when wet under streaming water in the sink, deep condition and use ok products... but darn that "pelo malo" biz

I've never been to a Dom. Salon, so I can't contribute anything about experiences. I did however, used to frequent AA salons and I had 2 different stylists from 2 different salons burn my relaxed hair with those God forbiden marcel curling irons! IMO the heat from those things puts any blow dryer to shame. My hair is very thick but the strands are fine and stylists think that it takes a lot of heat to straighten my hair but it doesn't.

With that being said, I honestly think that it depends on the stylists' ability to asses each clients hair properly and adjust heat as needed, be it Dom., A.A., white or whoever. But I will say that learning enough Spanish to make it clear exactly what you want and don't want should help and it might keep some of those disrespectful comments at bay if they know that you can understand them. :yep:

I have only had one experience and the heat from the blowdryer was just too much. However, once I went, I learned the technique and just incorporated what would work for me at home.

It does make one wonder how a country with a Black-mixed majority think they have bad hair when relaxers only change the texture they naturally have. They are not a permanent cure-all for all their social ills. They are truly oppressed people and I hope for the day they stand up for justice. It's not easy to change society at all.

With that said, we don't go anymore. It was too damaging to my kids' hair. I prefer to rollerset myself and hood-dry at home. One can achieve longer-lasting results with just as much body doing it at home.

I am not totally against them but I think moderation is important. I would never go every two weeks or even once a month. I haven't been to one in over a year. Finding a good stylist that listens to your needs is a must. I have only gone to one stylist and she is very good about not using alot of heat on me because I request it. I observe how the other sytlists do hair and they will never lay a finger on me.

Too much heat. I wrote a post about trying to find lacio lacio. They showed me a similar product bottle. I didn't buy it but when I got back in the car my hand smelled like burned hair. I didn't get my hair done I just touched the bottle after the lady. Also when I walked in there was so much smoke, I could hardly see. I don't go anymore.

You could do a rollerset with doobie wrap and get a similar result.

I don't mind going to them once in a while. I prefer the blowdryer to a pressing comb. The Pic in my siggy was 2 days after I got my hair straightened at a Dominica Salon.

I feel the same way. Plus Ive seen some other get scalp burns from the concentrated heat.:nono:

Well you can go for special occasions but the outcome is a really nice style. Everyone has to atleast admit it looks nice but make your hair is good health and youve been using protein. To visit them on the regular isnt recommended...some of them don't even put heat protectant in your hair before they blow it out. Well you can go and make the decision for youself...like when my boyfriend comes back from Afganhistan for two weeks...I'm gettin a blow out

I've been to them once sine I've been natural. I did go periodically when I was relaxed but not often. I went maybe a year and a half ago and I probably won't go back unless I'm in a pinch and need my hair done ASAP. My hair looked fine when it was straight but when I washed it, my curls were noticeably looser from the heat. It didn't even feel right when I washed it. They didn't look that much looser when I looked at it but I didn't like it at all. I did revert back to it's normal curl after a few washes though. I have never had that happen any other time I had my hair straightened even when I did it myself and passed over each piece more than once with the flat iron.

My overall experience wasn't bad though. They didn't act nasty about my hair or act like they didn't want to do it. The women were nice and did what I asked. I got a deep condition, and a trim. She tried to rollerset it for me when I asked but my hair wouldn't stick to the roller so I just let them blowdry it and then flat iron it. They did charg me double the price because I was natural. My hair wasn't that long and it blows straight pretty easy. I didn't like the fact that she just said that off the bat without even seeing my hair.

I am not against it but it depends on the stylist. Make sure you tell them exactly what you want. Don't let them use the blowdryer on the entire length of your hair or you can end up with damaged ends.

I want to 2nd, 3rd, and 4th these comments! I'm not even natural, but this pisses me off! :wallbash: 2 of my best friends are natural and on three different occasions at three different Dominican salons (2 in D.C. and 1 in NY), the stylists have given my friends a hard time and tried to convince them to relax! The audacity! I mean, what person with APL length, obviously grown out natural hair just comes in for a roller-set and gets convinced to perm their hair!?!

It's silly...I was offended at the ignorance surrounding PURPOSELY non-relaxed hair at the Dom Salons. Other than this, I'll go every now and then, but like others have said, I think moderation is key and I never get relaxers done there.
