"Is all that your hair?"

This also happened to me recently. I went to get my hair flat ironed at Bubbles and the only stylist available was white. When she started to do my hair, she ran her comb through my hair and said "oh i thought u had a weave" :perplexed

This only happened to me one time. A few years ago an aunt of mine who was angry with me at the time says in front of several other relatives, "Is that your real hair?" in a real hateful manner. My hair was not long at all, still is not very long, but it's just very thick and this aunt has really thin hair so I guess she was just pissed. I cannot even imagine the day that people will think my hair is a weave. I could never stand people touching me or my hair. If my hair ever reaches unbeweaveable lengths and someone reaches in looking for tracks they are going to be very sorry. Goodness gracious, the nerve of some people.

This used to happen to me allot before I big chopped. It did not really bother me though because I rarely wore it down. I kind of liked the attention. ;)

People ask me this question all the time and I'm flattered. But I'm also self conscious because I'm transitioning and my roots are kinky and my ends are straight. Plus, I've got super thick hair. So when its in a braidout, it really does look fake.

this happens to me all the time, and not only is it rude ( people sticking there germ filled hands in your hair,) its offensive. its like if you are a black woman with long thick hair or just healthy hair for that matter, you either had to a)buy it or b)be mixed with "something." and i know if i was a white woman that there wouldn't even be the question of if my hair was real or not.

I don't get insulted at all when someone asks me if my hair is really "my hair". I just tell them- "yes it is". And then I'm off on my merry way. :) Actually the other day, a co-worker of mine asked me the question (i'm fairly new on the job and don't wear my hair out much). That day it was flat-twisted in the back and a loose wet-set in the back. She asked: "there's like, nothing added in there"? I wanted to laugh.

This past May I went to my cousin's graduation cookout. All of my mom's relatives were there. I just happened to be wearing my hair out and curly. It was the subject of some funny discussion. :look: An uncle of mine pulled my head down and looked for tracks, then siad: "you must get your hair from your dad's side of family." I laughed, yes, very much because that's the kind of guy he is, always joking like that. :look: I didn't take it personally at all. In fact, I kind of expected it.

But that's just me.

i can relate as well. there is a woman at work who has been there over six months. she always wears weaves or wigs which is fine. She always has some kind of comment she makes towards me about hair, weight, etc which sound like compliments but her tone is a little spiteful. about a month ago i had just done a touch up on my hair and wore it out. she had come up behind me at a meeting and ran her very long acrylic nails through my hair. it felt horrible but it was so surprising i didn't know what to say. she just smiled in a very phoney manner and said nothing. i guess she had her answer as she has not done this since. mind you, my hair was very weak and fine and at that time could break very easily. i was so mad all day :( . it is a violating feeling!

How about a shirt that says..."Don't bother searching for tracks...I grew it myd@mnself!"

When I get to the point where people are asking me, I might just make a shirt.

That is reall rude and gross...wouldn't people be disgusted at the idea of touching someone's scalp (potential oils and skin cells that are there)? Some people need a good smack.

luv that idea

Unh hunh. That would've been girlfriend's first and last time putting her hands in my hair. You don't go around feeling up somebody's head like you're crazy. I've been ready to knock a couple of people out at work when they pulled my hair back after I'd just gotten braids. "Oh, I didn't know that it would hurt". One male coworker thought that I was wearing a wig since my hair is thick and I'd hardly ever wear it down so he decided to pull it. Really hard. He pulled my damn hair out. I gripped his head and pulled his hair out. I don't play that mess.

She must not be a hair board member. She broke the cardinal rule of no touching a woman's hair unless invited.

I think U better jump on that thought before someone else starts selling them on the board. It could mean big buck$

Dont know how I would react now since this has never happen to me for awhile now but I cant wait for the day though. But I dont know too many people who would touch me without asking first anyway especially if they know me.

I had a very close friend of mines say "how many inches is that?" huh... "how long are your tracks?" what? girl you know I aint got no track in my head! "for real?!?" yep you can touch it... She touched it and pulled it apart and went back to the other tabl eand made a dang announcemnt! I swear that was the funniest thing! I dont care if pepole think my hair is fake or not. If it looks good enought to look fake the I say Im doing sumthin right!

OMG!!!!  You don't know how mad I just got when I read this! What the hell was that fool trying to do when he pulled your hair hard like that? Rip the 'wig' off in front of everybody at work? After you gave him a taste of his own medicine what did that stupid a$$ do?

Good going on that, by the way!

I have gotten that all my life. The first time was in 3rd grade, the teacher i had everyday all of a sudden out the blue asked "is that all your hair". Now mind you my hair has always been long, but my cousin braided my hair and apparently she assumed that couldn't be all of my hair. Next instance, my mom's friend (a next door neighbor) I let my hair air dry one day, so it was curly. She asked "what did you put in your hair to make it curly" (she has naturally curly hair), so I said nothing, she said "that's impossible, you had to put something in it to make it curly". Then one day recently some girls were standing behind me...this girl says to her friend "I want a Yakky (i think was the term) weave like that...now i have never had a weave in all my life, and obviously that is no offense to anyone that does. So nowadays I just laugh....but only when I was younger would people tug and pull my hair. Luckily for them no one ever does that anymore.

Imstush, I'm not sure how old you are and I know some of the little girls now wear added hair for braids and stuff. But seriously, what the heck was that teacher talking about? I was in 3rd grade in the 80's and a little girl wearing fake hair wasn't even thought about! When was this?

No this was back in the 80's. I am 27...not to mention, I came to class everyday with pony tails, so i have no idea

That was very funny. I wonder if it could work for me? So far, they've kinda snuck up on me from behind...I didn't even see them coming. The first girl, as she was passing me, stuck her hand in my hair and said "Is all that you?". By the time I stood up and turned around, she was a a few feet from me.

Don't get me wrong. These are nice ladies and I don't want to alienate anyone. I may be here for another 35 years. Who knows.

That's probably part of my problem.

I have a coworker who grew her hair from a chin-length bob, shaved up the back to waist-length in 3 years or less. They wouldn't dare do that to her because they know she'd cuss them out.

Too nice for my own good.

I'm a nice person too. Sometimes a girl has to throw on the "mean face" every now and again lol. I keep my hair up usually. Lately when I wear it down I get lots of looks but no one touches. hehehe I think I have "mean muggin" down to a science! :p

lol wow! I remember those days. I remember these two sisters that had beautiful hair down below their shoulders. They wore pony tails that were two strand twisted and I always thought the style was sooo pretty. Girl you took me waaaaaaaaaay back lol :D

I hate when someone sticks their hands in my hair. If I am aware, I catch their hands before they make it to my hair. If I am not aware, when I become aware, you better believe they will know next time not to put their hands in my hair! That is rude. Don't touch me unless I tell you to!

This happened to me last week! LOL

After I taught my step class, 2 ladies, 1 gentlemen and myself went to Fridays for a snack. My hair was a hot *** mess. I literally looked like Gossamer in Nay's avatar. I am almost 7 months post touch up and it was bushy, thick and was hanging close to my waist. Still a mess though!

One of the girls reaches over and feels my hair and jokes "oh lawd, your hair is gonna be to your knees". I then laughed and said something like I was gonna cut it off and wear a twa. So she looks over at the guy and says look at her hair. He said...."I know it's a weave right?" She scrunches up her face and said..."No, why you don't think Black woman can have long hair?" His mouth just dropped and he stuttered some kinda answer. He thought all this time that my hair was a weave. I wasn't mad or anything. Just surprised that he could be so dang dumb! LOL

Beautiful lady beutiful hair, what nerve--I'm glad you left him speechless. before people start saying that's a weave they should get sharper eyes and just look, you can ususally tell the diff. esp if you've got thick hair it's even more obvious

You need to start beatin' their ASS!

It's going to be one dark day when somebody puts their hands in my hair without asking!

They wouldn't do that to no WHITE WOMAN!
