I tried to upload a pic but it wouldn't upload. I have pics on hairlista for those interested but I lose much more than 22 mm. I'm mbl, transitioning and have been a heavy shedder since childhood.
I don't usually manipulate my entire head of hair at one time or regularly enough to know how much I shed in any given time, but just wanted to mention to OP that length will affect the size of the ball someone gets.
For someone with hair like FlowerHair, I imagine she'd have a much bigger ball than even Size 13 after a week. Heck, ten hairs alone, at her length, might make a ball the size of #13.
Another thing that will just make the answers you get just vague/confusing is dry hair and wet hair might form balls of different sizes. Some people might flatten out their balls or have very compact ones, while others might fluff them up or have air spaces.
i think this is a good idea for a post. problem is, there are just too many factors to consider when shedding. i have A LOT of fine hairs, so it always seems like i shed a lot, but i still have bajillions of hairs left on my head. i've also noticed that as my hair gets longer, i am better about discerning shed hairs from broken hairs (thanks LHCF ladies!), but i wrap them all in the same ball before tossing them in the trash. hair density, strand diameter, length, transitioning, all that stuff i've learned here seems to come into play her.
sorry OP, not trying to sway the polls, but i just think this is a toughy.
i agree with other things being a factor...when myhair was shoulder length i always shed alot. (i was relaxed) but the ball was smaller. as my hair got longer the ball got bigger, but i feel the actual number of strands is probably about the same. the strands are just so much longer now that i am almost bsl......
i also agree that wet vs dry hair makes a difference, but for the sake of knowing all the facts, here are my stats :
--- i roll all the shed hair up to make a tight ball
---- i "measure" dry hair, not wet
---- i am texlaxed
---- my hair length is just below apl
---- my weekly shed hair is larger than 13 on a normal week. i have a surge of shedding every 8 weeks or so and then the shedding is maybe 1 1/2 times it's normal weekly rate
natural, APLish. I detangle on dry, stretched hair every two weeks. My ball is about the size a small lime when rolled tightly. I think that's 2- 3 size 13s
I'm so glad you posted this topic. I was just wondering the same thing about everyone else last night. I have a very dense size 5 ball. My hair is full shoulder length with some areas touching APL.
This is all the hair from detangling and my shower drain catcher. It was 7 or 8 days since I last detangled/deshedded. I'm a finger comber only. My hair is a little longer than shoulder length curly, and grazing on waist length straight. This hefty sized hair ball is completely normal for me.
I'm natural and at shoulder/cbl length. On average I get a size 5 ball or smaller (usually much smaller.) I finger comb and only use a brush when smoothing my edges.
I'm natural. I was a very shedder before but my hair is so thick it never was a problem. But since I started using cassia and henna. The shedding is non-existent. I literally can count the number of hairs and theres days I don't lose one hair. I attribute it to henna but it could be the msm as well, maybe a combo of both.
In a WEEK some of you ladies only shed a 5 or smaller?? I'm so jealous. I definitely shed more than a 13. The overall thickness doesn't change, but my hair is always on the thin side.
I'm texlaxed and hair is about 5 1/2 inches long, stretched.
I'm natural and grazing APL. I typically keep my hair in protective styles...probably 95% of the time. But when I do wear my hair out, it's straightened, and I get very little shedding (size 5 or smaller). I'll usually wear it out for no longer than a week or week and a half.
