I'm afraid to style my hair

I want to give myself a blow out so I can photograph my progress, but I've gone without using heat for so long that I'm afraid of damaging my hair and negating all my progress. I don't have time to sit and marinate at a salon, so I'm on my own. Could ya'll give me some suggestions.

The last time I wore my hair out was almost a month ago. I went home to visit my family in the MD/DC area. They are always complaining that I never wear my hair out so I decided to blow dry and flat iron my hair.

I used a heat protectant and allowed my hair to dry 80% then I used the blow dryer (had to borrow one from my friend) on the low and cool settings. I used the flat iron the next day and wrapped my hair when I knew I was in the house for good. I was so concerned about the state of my hair that I forgot to take pics!

It had been almost a year since I last used a blow dryer or flat iron. It made me so nervous. I have been on a braids, bun and baggie challenge so I worried about my ends drying out. No damage was done. I went right back to the bun as soon as we were on the road to go back to MA.

The point of my story is as long as you use some sort of heat protectant there shouldn't be any damage.

Thank you Simplycee, it's good to hear from my BSB’05 sista. Anyone else?

I don't think the health of your hair is going to go into the crapper because of one day's use of a little bit of heat. Deep condition well and then use a trusted leave-in and heat protectant. You can even use heat-activated products that protect your hair.

Using a blow-dryer on the lowest and coolest setting is hardly damaging at all. You could also get a rollerset and then brush it out. Steam rollers are a great alternative. Air-dry as you normally would, comb your hair out and then put the rollers in.

There are, of course, other ways of documenting your length progress than using heat. You could do it on wet hair, too.

Don’t worry girl, your hair can for sure take it.
While my visit to my family in Santo Domingo, I went to the salon 4 times for blowout in 3 weeks period. and my hair is just fine.

heat protectant is important !!!

God luck!

I feel the same way. I am so tempted to blow out this mess but I am waiting till june. I am too afraid of damage and since I color, it's even more frightening. It takes me 5 hours to dry and straighten my hair so its a day's work.

You guys really know your stuff. I got up my courage and carefully blew out my hair and flatironed it. My hair is as long and thick as it was in high school! I still have a way to go but I've come so far. I am indebted. :notworthy

I'll be updating my album with the blow out pictures. Yay!!!!!!
