I am also wondering what you guys consider to be a newbie.

I am newly subscribed to LHCF (low # of posts) but I have visited in the past and was a member at another site for over a year. I do a lot of research on hair because I love hair and hair science. So I am kinda a newbie to the site, but don't really consider myself a newbie to healthy hair care.

I think this is why it's important to listen (or be open) to everyone that is on the site if they have experience on a topic.

So many of us are not new to healthy hair care, even if we are new to LHCF.

I'm really not concerned about taking advice from newbies. People also have to remember to use common sense when listening to others' advice as well. The evidence is also in the pictures. With that being said, I'm MOST leery of taking advice from people who refuse to post pictures...

Some vets here, I wouldn’t listen to just as I wouldn’t some newbies. All that matters is if what someone is saying is grounded in factual basis that I can verify and their hair isn’t busted, to me.

Some people here act like becoming an 'expert' is something that takes years like getting a Ph.D., yeah right. Hair is not THAT deep people, lets face it. If you do your due diligence you can become an expert in this in very little time.

I really don't pay attention to who's new and who isn't. Even though the membership date at the top right hand corner of your post may say you are new, you could have had healthy hair habits your whole like and only just recently found out that there was a community of women with interests just like your own. Good advice is just good advice, whether it comes froma newbie or an old head, .

I'm leery of people joining the site just to promote a product. So if I see a thread where someone (usually without pics) and a low post count is in a thread telling folks about the new miracle product of the week that can be conveniently purchased at their website then I just bow out.

For the most part, if a newbies hair type and state of hair is what I look at when considering their advice.

Honestly, this is the only time I really look at join date; when I see people promoting a site/product/etc. Any other time, I really don't pay attention to it.

I still consider myself to be 'relatively' new to the site (based on my join date) but I've lurked for a while. A lot of "newbies" lurk for a while before joining also so I think discrediting their advice because of a join date is pretty ridiculous.

It sort of depends on what her hair looks like to me. But never pass up advice that may do you some good. Just because someone is new doesn't mean they know nothing. Afterall, they are researchers and may have stumbled upon something you missed.

i was discriminatory when taking advice at the start (... i'm ashamed ) coz back then i thought only people with long flowing hair know what they are doing (but actually didnt look at join dates or number of posts)......how wrong i was...very ignorant of me.

Lurking to me means "studying"... absorbing info....filtering it to make it fit individual needs and knowing whats best for YOUR hair.

so...i now know just coz someone may be new or doesnt have long flowing hair (which not everyone wants btw) doesnt mean they know nothing....joining alone means (at least for me) we r ready to take the next step and share everything we've learnt over our "lurking days"

but as i said i filter the info coz i know every bit of info is not going to work for me.

we all have something to give and we all deserve to be listened to.....hey we are all in this together after all...we all have a common goal....HEALTHY HAIR!

I think it has more to do with the appearance/health of the hair versus the join date. I offer my two cents as I see fit, but since I have very short hair then I guess I can understand why one might over look my comments/suggestions.

No, I don't listen to ANYONE blindly, but I give everyone the benefit of the doubt. I research things people say. I take what is helpful for me and ignore what is not.

I think it's a shame to just write anyone off automatically. None of us know everything.

It makes me sad to think that people who want to be helpful (like myself) would be ignored because their hais isn't long. My hair isn't long - I like to put up pics anyway so that u can see that its healthy - but it will be one day!

ITA. I pay attention to people who's textures are close to mine, have similar goals as me, and like/use products that I know work 4 me. I think this is more important to me then whether or not they are new.

And I definitely prefer posters who have pics but only because I am a hair whore and it helps me remember who has said what

ITA. I try to understand for my self what does or doesn't work for my hair. It makes finding the right tips, info, and techniques easier.

i couldn't check any of the boxes in the poll

just because some one is "new" or their "join date" is younger than a year does NOT mean that they are a newbie. they could have lurked. they could have 5 years on a different hair board, have had their own blog for years, may not have had a need for a hair board until they transitioned or maybe their 1st weave or what have you. new on paper does not mean new to good, healthy hair care. I take everyone's comments/suggestions/help with a grain of salt and i check facts before i run off and buy products or try some technique with my hair no matter who it works for or how many fotkis or youtubes they have posted.

After over 3 years, there are still some things and techniques I will NEVER use - but to each her own!

I'm a newbie and if someone has a question about a subject that I actually know something about, I'll respectfully offer an opinion if I feel it is valid and helpful. (For example, I was Ayurvedic before coming here and have a little knowledge on that, but I don't bother answering questions that are relaxer-specific 'cuz I haven't had one in 15 years!) I think a lot of us newbies are folks who have been researching and experimenting by ourselves for years. That journey is what made us seek out LHCF. It's great to have a community in which to give AND receive.

Exactly! I'm a newbie as well and I listen to everyone's advise, sure you'll "trust" the pros, but a lot of times they are MIA when you need advise..........

I think this is a good discussion. I know I'm often reluctant to offer ANY advice and when I do, it doesn't seem to be received too well. Or at all. It's okay though because I've learned so much and my hair is thanking me for it!

I think I am pretty open on this. It is "content" for me. You can pretty much tell if somebody is just full of stuff. I listen to what anyone has to say but that doesn't mean that I will follow suit.
My aunt cannot grow her hair for anything and quite frankly, at times, "her" hair resembles a small birds nest; but her daughter's hair are down their backs and beautiful...go figure. SoI cannot be that subjective about looks; but by the "quality" of what they are saying works.

good question. I would hope people would listen to any advice they feel could help them. Every newbie here didn't come in to the forum with three strands of hair on their head. Some actually had pretty healthy hair and wanted a place where they could meet like minded people(don't let the short cut fool you... it was a choice). Being a newbie myself, I am soaking up all the info like a sponge, however I do feel like I am able to give pretty good advice as well for what has worked for me.
