Man, I hope this doens't offend anyone, but I think this whole natural hair thing is a fad for the "real world". Everyone is doing it, and HALF of them don't know diddly swat about hair care! They just thought it would look cool!

It's the new hottest do, and I feel the need to catch up. Either you ahve beautiful natural hair, or beautiful long relaxed hair! Natural hair is a beauty once it is cared for, and I feel like since I'm not rushing off to get a BC I need to AT LEAST get to my goal of APL soon and VERY VERY SOON lool! Soon the naturals are going to be SL and I'ma be STUCK with them! I'm not havin it! :wallbash:

Anyone else feel like this

:look: i'm not sure how to respond...

*ETA: alright i got my thoughts together now OP. let's put your post in reverse...

i think this whole relaxed thing is an outdated hairstyle for the "real world." everyone is doing it, and HALF of them don't know diddly swat about hair care! they just thought it would look cool!

it's the most popular do, and i feel the need to catch up. either you have beautiful long natural hair, or beautiful relaxed hair! relaxed hair is a beauty once it is cared for, and i feel like since i'm not rushing off to get a perm i need to AT LEAST get to my goal of BSL soon and VERY VERY SOON lol! soon the relaxed-heads are going to be APL and i'mma be STUCK with them! i'm not havin it!

it works both ways. do you see how condescending that can sound though? why begrudge others for having progress?

you don't have to defend your choice to relax to ANYONE or prove ANYTHING to them. you know at first i wanted to PROVE to everyone that natural hair can grow long but i started noticing that if you're natural and have long hair people attribute it to you having "good hurr." yes, i've even heard people say that about long-haired C-napps... "oh well they got that good grade a' hurr, it ain't nappy like mine." okay, whatever then! people are gonna think what they wanna think, it's not my job to try and convince them otherwise! girl please i got bills to pay and a son to raise... the only person you have to convince is yourself. *** what everybody else thinks, let them do them and you do you.

Are you saying the people who big chop will soon be longer than you? So you need to step up your growth/retention??

Hey, we are all in this thing together. Whether relaxed or natural, we are aspiring for healthy, long hair. I did not think we were in competition with each other. We should be encouraging each other.

Since I have been on this board, I have seen some beautiful, long, short, relaxed, and natural hair.

Being patient and treating your hair with TLC is the key :yep:.

Blessings!!!

I'm lost too.

Most hair styles are fads...why natural gotta get called out, even though I don't really think its a hair style

Natural in and of itself is not a style. Cornrows, twists, locs, layers,- these are styles. I don't think allowing what comes out of the scalp naturally to grow can be considered a fad, the person is merely allowing the hair to do what it was made to do. Some people may decide to stop relaxing in order to get a certain style but their allowing their natural hair to grow. I think we are all here working together to better our hair so let's not make it a competition.

I think I'm as confused as everyone else...are you saying that for some women, natural hair is becoming a fashion accessory as opposed to a personal decision like it is for most of the women on this site? And you feel the need to have healthy relaxed hair because there's pressure to go natural if you have unhealthy relaxed hair?

Ditto on all the above...
and I beg to differ with you that going natural is a trend...
I think it's very progressive...
I think more and more people are going green
in all areas of their lives and going natural is just
one of the many steps millions of women have decided
to take to be less dependent on chemical cosmetics.
Anyway... I find that having a positive attitude helps
me reach my goals... so just emit positive energy...
if you see someone's hair you admire, don't think
of it as competition... be inspired by it...
that's my two cents.

I'm not sure how to respond either, but I look at the reasons I went natural and it wasn't a fad. I simply wanted healthy hair and wanted to give my hair a break from the perms, which proved to be too much for my hair. Now on the flip side, I have been looking a a style, a mo-hawk, to rock my natural strands in and I know that after a week that fad will be over.

ok im gonna attempt to understand this and say that maybe shes referring to the "real world" as people who are not members of this forum?? :ohwell: and that she is seeing a lot more ppl going natural who don't know how to care for it they just think it looks good?:perplexed um, and that....ok well thats all i could come up with lol :lachen: we need more clairification please but i think i could be part right? :spinning:

That's it loool!! Sorry for my rambling it's the coffee I swear! You know how you always want that "fresh new look" Last year it was the Rihanna cut. EVERYONE had it. This year it's the kute defined curled twa. Just makin a joke that soon they're gonna be catching up to me! I gotta get on it!

This is what I'm sayin. I don't care who opposes, this natural thing for most is a fad. Maybe not on this site, because many do it for health reasons, but in teh real world it's the new thing. Susie and Kim just made the BIG chop so I will too. It's kute. .Just like it was in the 70s with our BAA and 80s with our Jheri Curls, everything makes a turn around. I feel like the going completely natural thing is a fad for 2009.

No pressure with being relaxed or unrelaxed. It's a preference just like natural heads. But I think after natural fad leaves, we will be on to another chic style.

I think you are just saying that everyone IRL has either long hair or a BC and the naturals here on the board are growing to SL and are stuck? But all and all you don't want to be stuck at SL?

Is that it? :perplexed

I've noticed a lot of naturals IRL too but I've also noticed that they are sharing tips and advice with each other much like we do here. (Mostly military women)

Just remember that its not really a race...and keep ya head up. You know what works, just stick to it and you'll get there.

HHG!

Oh I took to long to post and didn't see your post. I could see why you'd think that.

No what is exactly NOT what I am saying. What I am saying is that I have seen a lot of new naturals on the scene lately. To me, going natural is the new "fad" of 2008-09. Just because it is in this form when it comes out of your scalp does NOT constitute it not being a fad.

The Definition of a fad is: A fashion that is taken up with great enthusiasm for a brief period of time; a craze.

I think going natural is the new "it" thing this year. Just like Rihanna's cut was the new thing last year, and before that it was kinky twists, and before that it was micros, it is the new style of this year. Period. 2 years ago you didn't see many natural heads walking around as you do today. Why vaires in reasons, but MY OPINION is that becoming au naturale is our new fad of the late 2000s

In most part, I think we are becoming cognizant of the state of our hair. Everyone wants healthy hair, and this is a great thing. Either you are gettin a BC to start from stractch or learning to take better care of your relaxed tresses to make it srong, healthy, and long. That is all.

actually it sounds like you are saying everyone wants STYLISH hair cuz they're just going along with a fad.

interesting what's going on in your neck of the woods though. where i live, the "natural fad" is my hair - big curly fro. and nobody's chopping one inch of their hair to get it, they're weaving it up just like they did with the Rihanna bob, the kinky twists, the micros... all done with fake hair cuz it's a fad and they want their real hair to still be in tact when the fad is forgotten tomorrow.

Okay I gotcha now girl.

I can't tell you how many people I heard saying "Oh I'm going this weekend to get the Rihanna bob." I remember the short fading to long Bobs from not to far back in the day. AND she got a new style right now lol.

I never really thought about it like this until you posted this though.

Exactamundo :yep: This is not a fad for me - it's permanent. I am not on a wait and see basis. I did not do the bc for anybody but me. Not to sound cliche, but I am not one of those people who jumps off the bridge because others do it.

Okay...

*backs away*
LMAO!
And you feel the need to have healthy relaxed hair because there's pressure to go natural if you have unhealthy relaxed hair?
don't agree...at all. i feel there is pressure to go to a stylist who knows what s/he is doing if you have unhealthy relaxed hair. LOL

there you go.

still dont agree. i can count on one hand the number (well maybe not literally) but i can go to wal-mart and out of all the women in there only 5-10% of the black women will be natural. and as long as luster's pink oil moisturizer is still being sold we are the only ones becoming cognizant of anything. we forget that we are in a bubble...one that cost to enter, mind you, so it will probably stay this way. we can pass on the info but i dont feel like there is a general trend for people IRL to have healthier hair. style > health for them IMO.

Ok, i understand what OP is saying and why she's saying it. She's not talking about women who make a soul searching decision to go natural because of the health of their hair or personal choice about chemicals. She's talking about the ones who do see natural hair as just another "ahir style." It's true, there are some women out there who think a twa and a fro is the new in do. But not like the '60's fros, the "new" fros with the 4b curls standing out. Some of them buy wigs to get it, some wear weaves to get it, and there are some that cut their hair to get it too if it's not too much of a sacrifice to get it (i.e. their hair wasn't that long to being with). Apparently the looks goes well with cowboy boots.
