You guys are killing me LOL

I remember when I used to spray Paul Mitchell hair spray on my hair (pretty much drenched in hair spray), then use a curling iron to make it stay put. I could hear my hair sizzle. All the Dominican salons in my area were doing it. It freakin FRIED my hair like crazy. Mind you this was done almost every day. This was when I was relaxed. Then I would wonder why my hair fell out LOL

Re: I can't believe I use to ___________ and thought it was cute. (Hair related story

I can't believe I used drench my head in brown gel to pull my lifeless hair into a back ponytail and THEN :nono:

add about 5 scrunchies on top of that:look: ya know... for thickness :lachen:

Holy crap my daughter used to do that...AND she'd put those awful butterfly clips (the ones that had the wings that moved) all over her hair. All these damn butterflies in her hair. I should remind her of that tomorrow LOL It was so tacky.

Oh yes... I did the donut bun...with brown gel... We used to use socks to get them real big, and I'd get mad when my mama would take my hair socks (because they were the only black ones I had and having a white tube sock peekin' out got you put on notice) and put it in the laundry.

We had a regional fad at my middle shool where (I can't believe I'm admitting this) if you were the stuff, you'd store a blowpop in your donut bun, and it had to be a blowpop. Don't show up with a Tootsie pop like no fool. You'd bend the stick or cut it so it wouldn't stab you in the head...So girls would be walking around with these monstrous donut buns with blowpops stuck into the center of them. Don't forget to complete the look by applying too much lipgloss--your lips had to be at least as shiny as your hair.

Re: I can't believe I use to ___________ and thought it was cute. (Hair related story

I used to curl my hair into the mushroom ( I used the curling iron and spritz religiously)
or I would do the fan with a banana clip.
Unfortunately I was also a member of the black girl mullet club (unwillingly )

Re: I can't believe I use to ___________ and thought it was cute. (Hair related story

:lachen:OMG! I am sooo weak at this thread!!!!! Yes, I still give my little cousins some baby hair.. They got the real deal, but I gotta make it more "pronounced" you see? LMAO ROFL

From 5th grade to 6th grade and 7th even.. Lawd.. was it really that bad.. ??? Okay, yes.... So I used to take my bangs which started from the middle of my head, and part it into an upper and lower section. Spray them with some paul mitchell spray or some Fantasia IC spray, curl one section going straight up, and one section going straight down. EVERY MORNING!!! No wonder why my poor little head ain't make it. And then I'd put a banana clip in every day on the back, curl that too. My hair was curly but never moist so it was like this dry, crispy, nappy curly bunch of hair, molded into a curl going under. It never was free, moved always with whatever direction my head was goin... I looked like a dang ram! Then I had to slick the sides down with some Dippity Do! Do you guys remember Dippity Do? I just told my mom, she real weak! I love saying it, "dippity do". Dippity done did me wrong! Dippity do not okay! So wrong! On top of it, I was one of those people who everybody said "you have good hair" but there was NO way you could tell.. It looked like a combo platter of Banchee and sheep's a**... Thank you Father for grace and education, where would any of us be without it? Well.. hmm.. don't answer that.. *thinks* rhetorical...

Anyone remember getting a "french roll" that was gelled down HARD, with a pantyhose leg rolled up in it for fullness and a bunch of hairpins adorned with fake gold beads and rhinestones holding it all together? Why did we do that?

oh lord! u described my mom, aunts, and grandma :nono:

OMG I just saw a pic of me back in the day. I had my hair in synthetic cornrolls and had my natural bangs out? WTF? Did I mention my hair was natural? Dang I was ugly!

I remember the big buns using the sock! :lachen:I remember saying that the church socks was the best to use! :lachen:

On top of that I would have a rainbow of the thick scrunchies :wallbash:

chicago in the late 80s/early90s was all about this style :yep: along with the bang in the left front corner, the ponytail in the middle, and the back bang in the right back corner. front/back bangs had to hang on the opposite sides!

Re: I can't believe I use to ___________ and thought it was cute. (Hair related story

I didn't do this, because my hair wasn't long enough, but at my elementary school the THANG was to...say you're wearing yellow, blue, and black that day. Well your socks would be yellow, blue, black on one foot (three pairs of socks mind you all rolled down to different heights to SHOW the colors) and then black, blue, and yellow on the other side. And you'd ampro all your hair back and wear about 6 scrunchies on your pencil thin sized bun. Blue, black, yellow, white, green, purple whatever. But it had to be HUGE!

YUP SHOOOOO' NOUGH! I did that too, especially with the socks. But we only were allowed to rock two colors and my hair was always a normal bun at least, but yes two scrunchies to match the colors... lol.

Oh and the blowpops, um yeah! Mid '90s in high school for me, that was the THANG TO DO! We'd rock them in our buns.:look:

Re: I can't believe I use to ___________ and thought it was cute. (Hair related story

I am guilty of the FAN too! I forgot all about that! hahahaha

And, I am still a fan of baby hair, but I told myself last year when I turned 30 that it was time to let the baby hair go forever. Yes, it took turning 30 for me to let it go. When I was a teenager I used to brush it down hard, gel it, then take a rattail comb and do all my little designs in it all down my hairline, then the slick my ponytail back with handfuls of brown gel and then wrap some 10 inch yaki tracks around it. You couldn't have told me I wasn't FINE as all get out.

Anyone remember getting a "french roll" that was gelled down HARD, with a pantyhose leg rolled up in it for fullness and a bunch of hairpins adorned with fake gold beads and rhinestones holding it all together? Why did we do that?

Noodle_Mama, that "frech roll" was the WEDDING hair do of the year. i made sure to get my french roll for every single wedding I attended....lol. I felt grown with that hair do. :yep:

OK, what about the french rolls/buns with the fingerwaves on one side, twists in the back, a bang in the front??? 3 hairstyles in one!!!:grin: What about the french rolls with the 'pearled' bobby pins, glitter and a spray design.. My stylist took anything (a heart shape, star shape, even scissors 1 time) and spray painted (temp spray color) the stencil shape on by bun... Girl I had so many different decorations...

C. Nicole, your hair wasn't "fly" unless it was adorned with many festive decorations lol.:lachen: Ohhh you had stencils.....I always wanted to try that but my mom was having none of it.

Boston Maria, I actually loved the sound of that sizzle back in the day. It meant my hair style was going to last me the whole day!!!. We should all be bald from these experiences.:yep:

Thank God we are not though. I have to rumage up some pics for you ladies!!!!

OMG!!! I am seriously dyin at this thread!!! i remember all these hair fads in jr. hih and high school. I had some serious memories of the blow pops. it was times I rocked more than one in my ponytail...didn't really wear buns then. LMAO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Oh yes... I did the donut bun...with brown gel... We used to use socks to get them real big, and I'd get mad when my mama would take my hair socks (because they were the only black ones I had and having a white tube sock peekin' out got you put on notice) and put it in the laundry.

Re: I can't believe I use to ___________ and thought it was cute. (Hair related story

Awww, I remember the fan and the swoop bangs to go with it....All through high school I saw that. I didn't do it because my hair was too long, thick and curly (then). Also, the ponytails with blow pops!!! I do remember using the HELL out of the brown ampro gel-everyday to sleek my hair into a ponytail. I was so hair dumb. If I knew what I know now I would have never traded my pretty curls for a relaxer....:nono::wallbash:

Question: Do people still wear 'finger waves'? I see a lady that works in a local thrift store that still wears em like they are the newest thing. No offense to anyone but I thought this was a 90's style???:perplexed

Re: I can't believe I use to ___________ and thought it was cute. (Hair related story

^^^ *Gasp* GIRL!! I remember that d**n fan! HAAAAAAAAAAAAAA! I remember I use to want to do my hair like that...my momma looked at me real fool like and said I wasn't walking around looking like a rooster or peacock! Man you just brought back some memories for real!

I was cditty bout it too! My hair was like shoulder length and I was like dang, my hair lonegr than these chicks so my fan looks hotter than yours boo!! I used to have a low ponytail (to make my hair look even longer) Then you get a fine tooth comb and seperate your hair so it's a big big fan. Put sme spritz on it but one fo those ball barretes on....knowing my grown tale too old to have that ish in my head. I had on my fake claires studs with my metallic eye liner and the lil rhinetone jewels outlining my lil swoop. If I was extra kute I put a lil butterfly up top. I had them in every color. SAD.

Re: I can't believe I use to ___________ and thought it was cute. (Hair related story

YOU HAD to have a ball in the middle of your donut at my school. If you didn't yoru hair was too short to make a big donut and you were lame. period. And then back in the elem days YOU HAD to have the bows with the cartoon character in em. I had like neck length hair with 3 BIG durn mickey mouse bows on em. I was the ish.

OH YEAH what about those tommy hilfiger scrunches sold in the dollar store? I had like 5 pair. With the matching tommy shoes bookbag and socks!! I was trill!!

What about crochet braids. I had these all in 3rd grade. You could see all that durn thread and fake hair that you could easily tell ain't mine. How about my friend put these in here hair when micros came in style. She thought it was the same. She was like 5 years too late witht he crotchet. They put her on blast in the middle school fashion police newspaper. So wrong So wrong.

Re: I can't believe I use to ___________ and thought it was cute. (Hair related story

I was so dumb.....I literally cut my edges off with scissiors because they were really nappy......I got such a scolding from my hairdresser.

I did this when I was in elementary school.:nono:

Re: I can't believe I use to ___________ and thought it was cute. (Hair related story

Its nothing wrong with "natural" baby hair. I was talking about the slicked about the gel put around the hair line and it being slicked down...trying to make the roughness look like "good" hair... LOL

I feel the same. If your hair is naturally like that, then fine. But grown women using all kinds of gel and whatever else to try and slick some naps down?:nono:

Re: I can't believe I use to ___________ and thought it was cute. (Hair related story

In junior high the donut was all the rage, but they had to be BIG. Why was I walking around with a saucer sized donut? Then I was jealous because this girl's was the size of a charger plate.

OMG!!!!:lachen::lachen::lachen:

This thread is hilarious!

I'm SO glad we didn't have one of those at my school. I probably would have been on the front page!:lachen:

Re: I can't believe I use to ___________ and thought it was cute. (Hair related story

I cant believe I used to perm my hair just to put braids in it. Ive also used household bleach to dye my hair. ive wrapped socks in my hair to make a bun. In jr high everyone thought my weave was real until someone pulled it out giving me a hug. lol.didnt use grease or conditioner for over five years.

Girl you couldn't tell me nothing about my crochet braids...they were cute then and now. :look: You catch my grown butt in them these days though. They were cute 13 and younger. :yep: Now that I think about it I might have rocked it a little later than that too. :ohwell:

Re: I can't believe I use to ___________ and thought it was cute. (Hair related story

Ok.. Are you ready for this?? So when I was growing up I did my own hair, so in Junior High school we wore 'fans'. Girl, I had my brittle neck length hair pulled up in a high ponytail and spread my ends out like a 'fan'.Girl i'm surprised a good whiff of wind aint come by and snap them ends right off..lol . Hell, I used to spritz that bad boy so hard so it wouldnt blow.. I was highstepping down the hallway..CUZ I KNEW I WAS CUTE...:wallbash::lachen::lachen::lachen::lachen::nono::nono:

OMG!!!! I did this too

Re: I can't believe I use to ___________ and thought it was cute. (Hair related story

I'm still not picturing this "fan". Can someone post this?

I used to wear my bangs to the side covering my eyes (ala Aliayah). Looked cool on her. Um, there were days I couldn't see a thing out of the left side. And mine were curly bangs.

I also wore really high ponytails to the side (like Madonna). I need to scan some pictures.

Re: I can't believe I use to ___________ and thought it was cute. (Hair related story

In High School, I use to pile on gobs of Let's Jam from root to tip because I thought it made me look like I had " good hair". I Know, sad and the funny thing is because I had really course hair, putting that stuff on every morning made it look much worse. Thanks god I didn't live in a cold climate. My pony tail could have hurt someone.

I know!!! Even now the smell of "Let's JAm" brings back memories. ( I still use it.............):lachen:
