How Do You Ladies that Have No Breakage Do It?

I want to add from my previous reply that for me, stretching my relaxers seem to make my hair stronger.

Make sure your hair is not overprocessed. Very important. Also, drink plenty of water and make sure you're getting your protein, internally as well as externally. Keep your hair moisturized.

more moisture, more protein, less heat.

..5 months later I say:

1. more moisture
2. more protein
3. no heat
4. less products
5. relaxing less often

my hair is coarse, so the breakage thing is tough. i'd add to avoid using too much product, including moisturizer. it creates buildup and breakage. its really about finding balance.

Going natural stopped all my breakage. If I see a broken hair or 2 I know it is time to trim. After I do I see no more breakage. But one or two is all I ever see when I need a trim.

Here's what I do

- condition after every wash

- be gentle with my hair

- put it in one braid when I go to sleep

- wear a lot of protective styles

- use a heat protectant when I blowdry

- find products that work for YOU. Find out if you prefer a liquid or creamy leave in and apply it every day. Try to stay away from gels and mousses with alcohol.

@NAY007 ---> do you apply a leave-in everyday? how often do you wash your hair? how do you wear your hair during the day?

Now, this is interesting. I'm so concerned with stopping my rampant breakage that I definitely saturate my hair with whatever moisturizer I am using. Can over moisturizing actually cause breakage?

i think when hotshot said that, she's talking about putting all types of products in your hair everyday like oils, hair lotions, serums, gels, polishes, whatever else... all in your hair at once.

yup, that sounds like what I do :look:

I've been taking better care of my hair since I've come to this board. However, I still have some breakage, especially when I do a braid out? How do you achieve no breakage status?

Moisture & TLC.

well, r u having problems w/ breakage from using a lot of products on your hair or not? *after looking @ your album, your hair looks nice!* :yep:

I use Nexxus Keraphix Protein Creme Reconstructor once a week and after each retouch. I always oil my new growth with WGHO while its wet, and I barely lose 10 hairs even now at 7 weeks post. I NEVER go without Infusium 23 Leave-In for colored/permed/relaxed hair. I've used this for years. I use NTM Silk Touch Leave-In Cream...it makes my hair very easy to detangle even with lots of new growth. I put Nexxus Botanic Oil on the body/ends of my hair and wrap it in a silk/satin scarf no matter what...until about 6 weeks post relaxer...then its getting kinda hard to maintain a wrap for me. :) Plus, I haven't used heat but twice in the last year. Jan 2004 I said no more heat. No flatirons, curling irons, crimpers, blow dryers, etc. I've done like one roller set under the dryer, and my last stylist blew my hair out and curled it once in the past year. I ALWAYS AIR DRY...ABOUT 99% of the time.

I only sit under the dryer with conditioner after touch-ups. I do 15 mins with Keraphix (protein), 15 w/Humectress (moisture), and follow with Infusium leave in or Fermodyl after touch ups. Other than that, I always wash and condition in the shower...I put a plastic cap on and wrap a towel around that...I turn the water up pretty hot to get the heat going. I leave conditioners on for 3-6 mins...Nexxus usually works in that time very well for me. I only use lye relaxers...the best thus far for me have been Optimum Multimineral (which I let my mom apply at home) and Mizani Sensitive Scalp at JC Penney (both always in mild...I never use Reg...and my hair would fall out it it touched a Super). I'm going to buy a Phytorelaxer Kit Index 1 for my next touch up in 19 weeks...if I can make it! :)

Thanks. I love your new avatar! I'm not sure if using lots of products is causing my breakage. I do have breakage, but some comes from knots and the rest from who knows where. I do apply lots of moisturizing products ... for example, I typically do all of the following at one time:

1. Spray SCurl all over my hair
2. Rub Asha's Heavenly Pudding or QP Mango Butter all over my hair in sections concentrating on the ends
3. Seal with an oil based product like WGO, Hair Milk or Asha's Hair Lotion
4. Put in a pony puff using IC Fantasia Gel

So, that's a lot of products.:drunk2:

Thanks! The amount of products I use depends on the hair style I wear. When I tried airdried braidouts or ponytails no matter what products I put in my hair, I would see broken hairs on my shoulder. My ends would get dry and frizzy quickly. So I don't do those styles anymore.

So after I wash and condition...

1. If I wear a bun covered with a phony pony, I will apply S-Curl No Drip or ElastaQP Moisturizer and Citre Shine gel to my hair. If my hair gets dry during the week, I reapply those products as needed. I shampoo once a week. At night, I wear a scarf around my head.

2. If I do a rollerset, I apply leave-in, glossing polish, and oil. I find these products protect my hair from dryness and breakage. If my hair gets dry during the week, I'll just apply oil to my hair and ends. At night, I just wear a satin bonnet over my hair and fluff out my curls with my fingers in the morning.

Also, with these styles, I don't have to worry about combing my hair or manipulating my hair. I only detangle and comb my hair on my wash day. Hopefully, I can finally stick with this new regime I made for myself while I transition.

After a "disaster relaxer" last November, for the first time in my relaxed life I had breakage! That's when I ran into this board, and I began moisturizing like CRAZY!! I also decided to go on a year-long braid chalenge. I felt like a greaseball, but four months later, I have about two pieces break off of my "fried" ends when I wash and condition.

I have to agree with everyone else, moisture, not oil is the key. Moisture keeps the hair soft and pliable. Also, less manipulation and little to no heat. Regular touch ups every 8 to 10 weeks also works for me. Being healthy physically also helps to grow stronger hair.

What moisture are those of you who who have no breakage using? Could you please give specifics like names, etc?
One of the moisturizers for me is S-Curl (which I know didnt work for your hair). If I dont wear my hair in a bun, my hair can go without a moisturizer. When I wear a rollerset, I just use oil or glossing polish to protect my hair from breaking.

I know when I first came to this forum I was doing co-washes every other day or so, using Breakfree and Surge and I barely had breakage. Now, I am so neglectful with my hair that I have broken hairs all over my shirts like in the beginning. I am going to go back to that routine because it seemed to work. I also sleep in a satin scarf and on satin pillowcases.

I would love to be breakfree... my hair just won't do right... Even with moisture, moisture, moisture,.... I have 9 different bottles and jars and still I have dryness and breakage.... I drink plenty of water... exercise and eat right and take vit. and protien..... I have not given up .. But the moisture thing might not work for me:eek:  ... But I am fighting it and trying to find a way to get through it....

Hello Starz,

For me my breakage stopped a couple months ago when I started the plastic baggie method. I was once or more weekly and put vaseline on ends, braid and place a baggie over my ponytail. I have not had any breakage (I did she a little however), not even during detangling. Just handle your hair with care, eliminate, and moisturize. HTH :)

I began to everyday/night moisturize with Hot 6 or Wonder 8 Oil. I prefer Wonder 8 because it has jojoba oil in it. Also I make sure to cover my hair with first a satin scarf (to keep the oil in) and then a cotton scarf (keeps the satin one on, and keeps the oil from getting on my pillowcase. Also, I'm huge on using Redken Extreme Deep Fuel Treatments.

Recently I notice I have a lot of breakage when I comb out my hair and I hear you ladies talk about prorein treatments. My question is do I need a hardcore protein treatment to use monthly? I have Nexxus Keraphix which I know is a light protein but I use it ever month...would it be better to use a light protein treatment every other week or use something like Aphogee every once a month?

I use Keraphix every other week

I always moisturize my hair before I comb it

I use a wide tooth comb

I'm more gentle with my hair

I mostly use salon shampoos and conditioners (but I do use V-05 for my CWs)

I wear protective styles like braids, updos, and buns

When I wear protective styles I saturate my hair with spray moisturizers.

I stick with my staple daily moisturizing products--WGO, Biostrand Phorme', and Leisure Curl's Spray Moisturizer. ORS Carrot Oil is another one I use.

I'm transitioning. I thought I was going to have a big breakage problem once I came out of braids and got my hair relaxed, because that's what usually happens, and one day I saw what I thought was a lot of breakage. Once I got back on my usual routine, it stopped. I have very little breakage now. :)
