I've been taking better care of my hair since I've come to this board. However, I still have some breakage, especially when I do a braid out? How do you achieve no breakage status?

I think a little breakage is normal, just from daily manipulation. But I think overall Im just EXTRA gentle with it , also I never give my hair a chance to dry out..

I went natural...although I didnt really have breakage when I was relaxed, because I rarely heat styled it, combed it, or got frequent touch ups. Now that Im natural, I RARELY see a broken piece

Like pink_flower said, moisture will with keeping breakage away. And being gentle with your hair is very important.

Also, use proper combs. Not every comb is used for the same function. Also, not all combs are created equal. Seamless combs are best for the hair.

Protein treatments can also help.

I've learned moisture!!!!!!moisture!!!!!!!!!moisture!!!!!!!!!! is the key to less breakage and I also agree with being gentle.

If you comb your hair alot or most of the time, try combing in sections instead of combing the hair altogether. Use wide tooth combs. Also, just avoid combing/brushing excessively all toghether. When your hair is wet, comb slowly through sections of your hair. HTH!

I had a serious moisture problem. I had to give up the blow dryer and mimimize using the hair brush and when I say minimize I mean like 4 strokes to smooth a style into place. When wet I use a really big toothed seamless comb and start with the ends first. I don't rake the comb through my hair every time I see a hair out of place. Once I style it after my wash I try to do very little to it so I don't have to bug it. I just add a little mosturizer each day until wash day and comb like once in the A.M and once in the P.M very gently. No yanking if I feel a tangle I take my time getting it out. Patience is the key but a little breakage is going to happen even with all these pre-cautions the idea is to minimize it as much as possible.

Ive achived it by eliminating the use of hot tools such as flat irons, blowdryers completely and curling irons and roller setting hair.

1) No blowdryer or curling iron
2) Plenty of moisture
3) Using a wide tooth comb
4) Findg products that work really well with my hair

I agree. Moisture is the key for me (wow, all of that rhymed!

My breakage stopped when I got rid of my blowdryer and other heating utensils. Now there is rarely a hair in the sink or on the floor when it used to be everywhere!

Deep conditioning is working well for me.

When I find my hair feeling dry and cruddy, I make myself feel incredibly guilty

When I comb impatiently and hear a snap, I super guilt-trip myself!

I no longer blow dry my hair ( I would see breakage all over my floor

I stopped relaxing and wearing extensions.

I went from March to Nov 2003 with no broken hairs (just a few splits here and there).
I:
slept on/in satin every night
never used heat
washed hair about 3x a week (1x with shampoo, 2x with conditioner)
used a petrolatum-based product on my ends and wore protective styles almost constantly.
Didn't go to any stylist
In Nov. I saw a stylist and then my hair started breaking. (but I'm not bitter or anything....

Moisture is key for me.
Protein treatment once a month and started airdrying more.
No blowdrying or curling irons, flat iron occasionally.

I eliminated breakage by going natural! My hair just didn't like relaxers. Hopefully, I'll be able to maintain the same when I go texturized

I do not touch my hair with a comb without using a moisturizer first. Then I comb in sections, this prevents breakage for me.

I haven't used heat in 5 months, take my vitamins (regular multivitamins) daily, plenty of H2O and try to eat really healthy (85% of time). What I think really contributed though is no heat, H2o, handling my hair very gently, co-washes, deep treatments, using everything botanical. My hair grows fairly fast this way...I have type 4 hair and within 7 months I gained approx 4.5-5 inches (about 3/4 inch per month), so doing all this has helped me keep all my hair.

I barely comb my hair (once every two weeks) and always keep it plaited and pinned up .... and when i do comb it, i start combing the ends up toward the roots with a wide tooth comb... i also stay on top of my conditioning treatments...

I dont think anyone is completely free of breakage. I agree with everyone hair, moisture, the right tools and being gentle and also adequate protein treatments.

As far as being natural goes, I noticed I got a lot of breakage when my hair strands were stretched too far. I did this by using tools that weren't ment for my hair, and I used them too often (i.e. Denman used in the shower, trying to comb out my hair all the time in the shower). I basically let my hair be now.

Once I stopped stretching my poor strands out, the breakage and tangling has slowed down greatly and I'm slowly trimming the bad hair.

Exactly, I only comb my hair when it has conditoner or moisturizer in it, and combing in sections made a huge difference for me!

I had my last relaxer in July. Normally, I would have alot of breakage, and would require a relaxer every five weeks. But because, I Moisturize, Oil, Protect, and pamper my hair, I have no breakage. I wash it 2 - 3 times each week with deep conditioning which is important for me because my ends have color. Shea Butter on the ends and protective styles are lifesavers for me. /images/graemlins/band2.gif

I think that via trial and error, I am progressively discovering the products and methods which work and which do not work for my hair.

As a result, I am experiencing less breakage.
