Has length made it more difficult to moisturize your scalp?

I have been having this issue for a while now, for almost a year and I was hoping I am not alone and you guys have tips.

The last weave I had was removed last August and before that everything was fine, I even had a weave and had no issues with this. It was also when I finally hit BSL

I separate my hair in sections for wash and condition then while wet, I almost saturate my scalp in olive or coconut oil, then on my actual hair, I use olive oil and my shea butter mix and seal with castor oil.
Now, every 3-4 days, sometimes even 2-3 days after washing my scalp is itchy and dry. I checked, I don't have any illnesses/psoriasis, so I don't know what's up? I even switched up with clarifying shampoos and it's still the same. I use sulfate free products.

Are the oils not moisturizing enough? Has anyone else experienced this? I think this became an issue due to the increased length or perhaps thickness, because I haven't changed my regimen.

What should I try? My schedule really doesn't allow for as much washing as I do, and I want a much simpler regimen. I want to cut washing down to once a week. What else should I be putting on my scalp?

Thanks in advance

Have you tried not putting anything on your scalp? I used to think castor oil was great on my scalp. I stopped it about 5 weeks ago and I can go sooo much longer between washes now if I want.

With all those oils they tend to attract dirt too so that's likely what your problem is.

Have you ever tried not applying oils to your scalp at all? I was dared when I was about 10 by a teacher when greasing the scalp or oiling it was the norm. (My mom would sit me down and part my hair oil, part, oil...still every inch was covered. Not doing this made me have dandruff and itch like crazy. So that dare was the craziest thing I had ever been asked to do, and like a nut, I took the dare.)

First day, scalp was itching like mad. Second day, no itch. And it's more than 30 years later and I live with a product-free scalp. In fact, the only time my scalp will itch is if products get on it. The scalp has a lot of pores through which sebum is produced to moisturize. So as long as you're getting your good oils and drinking water, you really should not need anything on it.

One might argue that it's always been the opposite for them, but people change. Don't knock it till you try it. And don't quit after the first day. Try baggying a bare head after washing and conditioning and ACV rinsing and then airdrying, and see if your scalp doesn't feel absolutely wonderful in the AM, not to mention clean and fresh.

I agree with the previous posters. I try to convince my friends and family that there is no need to oil/grease your scalp and none of them can ever get past the initial stage of itchiness. I've been oily scalp free for probably 7-8 yrs now and the only time mine itches is if product gets on it (just like Nonie said) or if I didn't rinse my scalp good enough.

What made me stop using grease was that for some reason the grease would itch my scalp as if something was crawling on it. I tried probably every grease in the store and the same thing would happen. So I decided to go without and my scalp has been happy ever since. I've used growth aids like sulfur or castor oil before but that was just to try to speed growth. But I don't use anything now.

OMG! This used to happen to me as well! I would be freaking out thinking I had lice or something. I haven't experienced this since I stopped oiling my scalp.

Hairsnob, glad you mentioned not rinsing the scalp well being a culprit. :yep: Conditioner residue is a big cause of itches, which is why I rinse for a looooooooooong time after conditioner, then follow that with a dunk in ACV solution to massage my scalp and ensure it's squeaky clean. :lick:

i haven't greased my scalp in years and i don't have any issues. the scalp needs to breathe. but the more my hair grows, the more sections i have to create to make sure products coats all of my strands.

I've never greased my scalp. My mother never greased my scalp either lol. Actually like 2 days after washing my hair, my scalp produces it's own oil.

same here! i don't really put stuff on my scalp. it produces enough of it's oils. i oil my hair and at the same time massage my scalp but i dont really oil my scalp.

(UNLESS....it's qhemet amla and olive heavy cream, which i usually use in the winter. that stuff just feels DELISH on my scalp!:lick:)

Wooow, it may be the situation here, I'm putting too much on my scalp. I'm serious, I dang near douse my scalp with oils so my new growth wont be dry and brittle. I just always felt the oils help keep my moisture level up, it's like, the more the better.

As this situation continued and my hair grew longer, I begrudgingly parted in more sections, used more and more oils, I mixed them, used nozzle applicators, tea tree, DC'ed with oils, I just thought the main culprit was a dry scalp because there were flakes.

I am definitely going to try my next wash without products on my scalp. I may use a little on the hair itself and stop there.

Thanks to all you ladies, I totally appreciate all this insight.

I usually dont put anything on my scalp. I am currently using a little bit of razac finishing creme to keep my scalp smelling fresh. So far so good.
