"Hair" old wives tales...

I want to hear some hair wives tales. You know there is some truth to some of those tales and I want to get to the bottom and see what's truth and what's a tale! So tell me some you've heard, if you tried it and if anything was true, what part of the tale was truth.

I heard that if you trim or cut your hair while the moon is on the increase it would promote growth. In laymans terms, when the moon is going from new moon to full moon. It's increasing...you get it? Anyway...I looked at my calendar and did a trim. There was two weeks before the full moon, and you know what. I promise to you, my hair grew 1/2 an inch within three weeks. I kid you not. I trimmed the crown of my head in February and cut it down about 2 inches. It's now double that. I don't know if this is truth to the tale or my regimen is pretty darn good. Only my crown was trimmed and only my crown had exceptional growth. My hair grew everywhere else but more so where I trimmed. All I know is, my hair had a growth spurt...sooooo, anymore wives tales that seem true or NOT!

the 1st one that comes to mind is that you must burn any hair that you loss in a comb or brush or someone could put some voodoo on you...

If I had all of the hair of mine Ive watched my mom & nana burn thru the years, Id have pinky toe length hair

LOL!:lachen::lachen::lachen: I used to pick up my hair from the floor in my horrible shedding days and flush it. NEVER in the trash because someone would make a voo doo doll with it! I forgot all about that one!:lachen:

Brushing made the hair grow.
Grease. Grease, Grease and then more Grease to grow hair. (Blue Magic, Crown Royal and Sulfur8)
Black folks just can't grow long hair.
:lachen::lachen::lachen:

I've been told to brush your hair 100 times. (I remeber Marsha Brady doing this, but my hair aint silky like hers :lachen:)

This one is morbid:ohwell:

My grandma would never let me and my cousin work on her hair at the same time. As little kids we would love to play in her hair. She'd say it was bad luck, and that the youngest of the three would die. To this day you bet my simple self will not let 2 people work on my hair at the same time:nono:.

I had this woman put in comb coils for me, in her living room once. When we were done she brought me my hair in a little bowl and some matches so that I could supervise the burning. I was like OK, that was weird. This woman also only washed her hair 4 times a year. Not that that was an old wives tale or anything, just weird.

If a bird finds a piece of your hair and uses it for a nest, ALL of your hair will fall out.

My mom told me that when we would sit outside in the summer and "do" each other's hair. We were famous for cleaning the comb/brush and just dropping the hair outside but that scarred me. She had us believing that we'd wake up and ALL OUR HAIR would be on our pillow case.

I still don't brush my shoulders or drop a piece of hair outside.

ETA: When my momma would do our hair outside in the summer, she'd burn whatever came out of the comb/brush so that no bird (NOR MAN) should find our lost locks.

My abuelita to this day tells you never to let your loose hair blow in the wind, or let any shed hair fall to the ground while outside. Says birds will pick it up and add it to their nest and you'll have headaches for the rest of your life :perplexed. I'm still careful not to let any shed hair blow into the wind.

Ours are similar and I get nervous outside too!

I STILL cant let 2 people work on my hair at the same time.. I grew up being told the same as you,,, and to this day when I go to certain African Braid Salons, they get made cuz I wont allow it...

My favorite African braider knows me well enough to not try it

WOW - the similarities make you wonder - don't they??

My mom used to say something similar about hair... But that you have to burn it because mice and rats can find it in the trash and make their nests out of it and you'll go crazy.... lol

Hell that scared the crap out of me!

I been told your hair can tell you how many kids you will have.

If you pull out one strand of hair from your head
put your ring between the strand and hold it still above your right hand

If the ring swings in a circle that means you are gonna have a girl
If the ring swings in a straight line that means you are gonna have a boy

If it does both you will have both boy or girl.. I haven't done it yet but saw it done on one of my friends. And it swang in a circle once for her.

I got a real old one........

Never wash your hair on your period......:lachen::lachen:I still don't get that one

And similarly, don't relax your hair while on your cycle, the perm won't take. It happened to me once :yep:. I will wash it during that time, though.

My Grandma (RIP) told me to always cut/trim hair during the growing moon, I trimmed today. :yep:

well you certainly can't have a monkey so it must be a boy or girl :lachen:

I'm from the caribbean so I grew up on them tales

there was one....if you out and a strand of hair came out you're supposed to swallow that strand or else "soucouyant" (creole for witch) will get it and put a curse on you

I heard that one too but with a twist...if you threw it in the garbage a bird would make a nest out of it and you'd go crazy

This happened to me before too, and I had a bad scalp burn. I do find that my hair just doesn't act right around that time-ever!

Yay I'm not the only one!

I heard that when going to get a hair cut, if the woman cutting your hair has her period, then your hair won't grow.

If you want your hair to grow long, you should get a trim on St. Andrew's Day (Nov. 30th).

And along the lines of hair and bad luck, both my Indian and Serbian friends told me that you should always throw away hair that has fallen out of your head and should NEVER keep it inside your house overnight or it will bring you bad luck. They used to come and clean out my hair brushes and flush the hair down the toilet all the time!:spinning:

The 2 I've always heard ...for fast hair growth let a pregnant woman or a man cut your hair....:ohwell: , I dunno cos' I've neva tried it---too scurred :nono:!!!

I was told... never flush your hair in the toilet. This will cause breakage:perplexed. you should place your hair inside the pot of a plant. Your hair and the plant should grow faster. (A woman from the VI- not sure which Island, told me this). She says that's what she does and she had MBL hair.

It's a gamble when it comes to pregnant women. Some will grow your hair and some will cause it to fall out.
