Yay- a steaming challenge!!!! Thank you OP!

I'm Moodyma'am
I'm texlaxed
I have a floor steamer
I'll be steaming once a week with 'cone free/polyquat free conditioners.
My current length is SL unstretched - I'm hoping for full CBL unstretched by the end of this challenge.

(I will update my siggy with a pikistrip - the first pic will be my starting length)

I'm in. In the process of acquiring a steamer. I am really curious......Can anyone advice on the pros/cons of tabletop vs. stand alone steamer? TIA

If you can afford the difference in cost I would opt for the standing steamer. The steam is more intense than the table top ones.

^^^ ITA with CT Ajoke.

I had a table top one but for me it was no bueno :nono:

I think bc I had already exp the standup ones it just wasnt cutting it for me.

Btw Ajoke which country you based in?

Count me in.

I'm a natural and have a floor steamer that I use about once every 10 days or so.
I will steam my hair twice a week unless I have a weave installed. I usually steam with coconut-avocado oil mix, but do use a hair masque as well if needed. Not yet sure how I will go about this with a weave installed. I will read up on some other threads to find out.

I'm in as well. I love to steam my hair. There is such a big difference from going from a hard table top hooded dryer to a steamer. Plus by steaming you feel that you are really using the products.

For those interested I purchased mine from ebay with LCN, I believe. It was $119 plus free shipping.

It works great!

This will be easy as I've been steaming every week for the last 19 months!

I have relaxed hair and have a stand up steamer.

what type of steamer do you have and where did you get it from? im inlondon and i really want a steamer but im finding it hard topay £300 for an aphrodite when funds are tight. TIA

I will sign up :D

JJamiah
Relaxed
Will Steam weekly when out of Protective styling :)
I have a SalonsRUS steamer as well

I'm in! I've decided to straighten my hair every 3 - 6 months (depending on if there is a special event coming up), and while I'm transitioning, I'll try the homemade steam treatment before straightening my hair. I will do steam treatments more frequently as I grow more natural hair.

I steamed yesterday using a mixture of black strap molasses, grapeseed oil, black tea, suave shea and almond, reg Castor oil, and um some other stuff im sure. and I steamed for like 20mins my hair was sooo soft afterwards. I ended up doing a BTR, and then conditioning again. And the flat ironing and using 4 large flexirods, for a loose flexi rod set. My hair feel sooo soft and strong at the same time.

eta: back with pics. I really think has something to do with how soft my hair is even in its flat ironed state.

Yeah I've got an aphrodite steamer - you're right, that £300 isn't funny.:nono: Try ebay, there are much more cheaper models on there. When I bought there wasn't nearly as much affordable choice but it's much better now!

Just did a protein steam with UBH and followed up with L'Occitane Repairing shine mask. Just sitting under the dryer now with my rollerset.

I would really like to join this challenge.

Name - Sonia1965
Hair type - Tex-lax
Steamer - Aphrodite floor standing steamer
Frequency - Will aim for 1-2 times a week

At the moment I am using coconut oil mixed with Scala masques and protein treatments - the moisture I get is really good.

Your hair looks beautiful memyselfandi - really soft! :yep:

Yeah the steaming is the perfect pre flat ironing treat for the hair. I really does bring out that lovely flowy look when you straighten. I did the exact same thing yesterday I steam DC'd, did a rollerset and then just decided on the spur of the moment to flat iron then I put a few flexis in for loose curls.

Now all I need is YOUR length! :D

I'm in (I'm really becoming quite the challenge junkie!)

Britt
Newly Natural :) <- yes, I am still giddy about it!!!
Every 2 Weeks using a protein treatment I concoct

I have a floor steamer from Salons R Us, which was mandatory since I am small and adjusting tabletop stuff to the lowest settings still had me sitting on phone books like a child... no bueno.
I don't know my current length since I haven't straightened, but I am aiming for SL by December, and I know this will give me even more success.
I'm really excited! I love steaming!

^^ OMG. How do you get your presses to come out so smooth and sleek? Can you PM or VM me your regi please?!

Steamed yesterday! Woo hoo!! My hair came out soooo soft! :yay: I follow Biancaelyse reggie (sort of): I pre-pooed with hemp seed oil, then mixed neem, blackstrap molasses, rosemary hydrosol, and the rest of my SE conditioner and steamed for 25 minutes. I rinsed, clarified, used Roux PC, and Aussie Moist and was done. I used a homemade leave-in (courtesy of Kimmay's YT channel) with JBCO and my hair was soft was cotton. I braided it up and slept in it overnight (air dried) and yesterday had my hair twisted. I didn't realize how soft it really was until I touched it in the twists and could still feel the softness. I'm a steamer for life!!!

I steamed yesterday with Alter Ego Garlic Conditioner :) 30 minutes hot like a barn fire WHEW! My hair is ubber soft. before I steamed I did a Nexxus emergencee treatment So my hair did got the works ;D

Thanks ladies for your input. I have ordered a stand up steamer today. I got it on ebay for 188 Euros plus shipping. I am really excited. I opted for the stand up version because the tabletop version isn't that much cheaper, and this is more solid. I also opted to buy here as opposed to buy and get it posted from the US. Here is a link to the one I ordered if anyone is interested. http://cgi.ebay.de/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...ategory=131711&_trkparms=algo=LVI&its=I&otn=2

@Positively radiant, I am based in Germany.

So my stats for the challenge

Name: Ajoke
Hair type: Natural
Steamer: Stand-up
Frequency: 1x- 2x a week (I am trying to be low mani, so I'll start off with 1x a week and see how my hair reacts.

There is another thread that discusses this that I will try to find for you. Mainly it boils down to whether you have the space to store it or not. Since they are similar in price, I went with a floor steamer because I have the space to store it.

I will be back to edit this answer with a link...so check back.

I chose a stand up steamer because:
1. I had the space to store it. It really doesn't take up much room and rolls, so after I'm done with it, I tuck it into a corner of my closet and leave it there until next week.
2. It's more comfortable. There's no balancing the steamer on a table while scrunching down and tilting my head and contorting my spine just to get an even steam. With my stand up one, I sit up straight and comfortable in my chair, and my steamer fits right over my head. It makes the experience truly relaxing.
3. It was easier to acquire my stand up steamer. I only like to buy from reputable dealers, and the only tabletop steamers I could find at the time were from shady Chinese merchants.

But a con of my stand up one is that when the school year is over and I go back home, I have to disassemble it, put it in the box, tape it up and drag it home. With a tabletop one, I could just fold it up and be done. And storing the empty box is honestly more inconvenient than storing the steamer.

hth.

If you can afford the difference in cost I would opt for the standing steamer. The steam is more intense than the table top ones.
