After investing time learning about braidouts on this board yesterday, I wondered if I should try something a little different than what I have read so far. After washing and deep conditioning my hair last night, I dug in my box of unused synthetic hair for braiding and grabbed the color that I know I will never use again. That color was a loud gold. I also thought it will be easier to see were my hair ends. I wish I had a detailed list of all of the products I used, so I will have to update that info onto this thread this weekend. But what I did with the fake hair is I used it to braid in 11 cornrolls. One roll going from top to my side burns, on both sides. And the other 9 braided in the directions of the way my hair falls, meaning not all going straight back. I felt that the fake hair would eliminate the need for me to use rollers on my ends so the crimp would continue all the way down my hair shaft. Plus it seems to help my ends to not look as frizzy because each braid does not get all tiny and thin. After braiding I had to cheat a little and sit under my hooded dryer for about 15 minutes to ensure it would be fully dry the next morning. I then tucked the braids under my satin bonnet cap and called it a night. After I removed the braids, this morning, I just lightly sprayed my ends with my leave in reconstructor to calm down some of the frizz. It is mid-morning and it still looks great so far. It will be interesting to see how it holds up after sleeping on it loosely tucked inside my bonnet.
Are there any other suggestions from those experienced in braidouts as to how I prepare my hair for sleeping?
I can not compare it to the other techniques I have read about to this extensions method, yet I am still very happy with my results. It did take me longer by fooling with the fake hair but I had the learning curve to deal with, so it will go faster next time. I will eventually try using this technique with several large plats all over my head and post those results as well. A note of caution, make sure you pick all of the loose fake hair out of your own hair after you take the braids out, especially if the color dose not match yours.
