Growing Hair Long With Braidouts

I LOVE braidouts. I do them almost every day. I think its helps keep my hair stretched and in clumps so my tangles aren't too bad. Its easy for me to style my hair after I take my 6-7 overnight plaits out. I love the look and its perfect for my 4a 4b hair. I am going to continue to do them (exclusively) and check for growth/retention

Braidouts/Twistouts are 2 out of my 3 main transition styles (see siggy), I like that I don't have to worry about detangling while rocking these styles.

BUMP! This is what I am doing :) Braid/Twist/Bantu knot outs 24/7
with the occasional roller set here & there

Im not BSL yet, but im getting there....I can definately say that twist and braid outs have been a HUGE contribution to hair my journey, and I rarely do protective styling...

I have perfected my braidout/twistouts...I wore this style today and received so many compliments, I could barely make it from point A to B, lol.

I will try to keep this up, though I am tired of braiding my hair nightly (already) to get the defined look - i scarve my hair before sleeping. I like that you all have mentioned how well your has grown/thickened since sporting it, so I'm gonna stick with it. I did blowdry my hair first, though. I may or may not continue with that. I need a break from bunning, because my hairline is feeling it...

thanks for the thread and thanks for posting your progress/reggie, everyone.

i love braidouts i used to do them when my hair was wet from washing but now i let my hair airdry about 90% the spritz my hair with water add some moisturizer and seal with oil. I conrow my hair in 3 braids and i use a zig zag part so its easy to blend once i take them out. I love that i can control how curly or wavy my hair will be depending on how tight i braid my hair. I use a lil mousse on my hair to hold it so it last me a good 3-4 days before it starts to look ragged. instead of putting a satin cap on my hair i put my hair in a loose ponytail on the top of my head and then put my satin cap on this has helped with maintaining the curls, because when i just put on my satin cap and sleep on it like that my curls on the side i sleep on the most would fall by the 2nd day so that has helped in prolonging the hair style.

This is an oldie but goodie. Braidouts definitely help my hair. Especially the longer it gets the better they look and the easier they are to maintain. I also dont worry about my ends too much either in braidouts even though my ends of out the whole time.

I just moisturize with scurl and oil, braid in 3 plaits at night, loose in morning, rub oil on it and go.

I've jumped on the twist out bandwagon.

I think it's easier/faster.

However, more than one day, and my hair is not looking 'right.' I'm respraying my hair with my own leave-in concoction and twisting it up, then pincurling the ends.

It looks nice and wavy/curly and fluffy in the am. I haven't picked it out, yet - but if I did, I think it'd look goooood and xxxxxlarge, just the way I like it. I'd like to keep this up for a few months and see how much I retain.

thanks for the tips, ladies, keep 'em coming.

Is anyone using any type of serum before or after the twistsets to keep them from frizzing up? I read somewhere that certain serums help with this.

I used braid outs for a year before my hair got damaged by a hair stylist, this was before I found LHF. It grew my hair because I wore my braid out for at least 6 days. I just shake it every morning and I'm ready to go. To make it last all week I used gel and mouse and braid it while wet. The gel and mouse didn't dry out my hair since I apply heavy load of ORS Olive oil lotion before taking the braids out.

I don't use serums, I use conditioner and seal with vaseline. I may try to sleep on today's twistout and not redo - i have a bonnet that i can use. I pray my hair looks really 'fresh' in the morning. I'll update you guys.

i dont use any serums or gels
after im done washing my hair i wait until its about 50% dry, then i put S-curl moisturizer and seal with coconut oil. i usually make 6-8 plaits because i cannot cornrow to save my life&i put rollers @ the ends.
in the morning i just undo them, shake,&go.the picture in my siggy is what my braidouts usually look like

I don't use any serums. I moisturize with diluted vo5 and oil and then just take them down the next night. I think I will start taking them down with oil on my fingers for an extra shield from the cold weather

Thank you!! The 23 week stretch was easy til about week 19 or 20. Then I had ot start praying and putting on mood music to detangle! :lachen:

To answer your ?, I just part it and style it while it's wet (w/ leave-in) and then I just let it hang and dry. Sometimes I'll sit under the dryer so that the top will dry b/c right now I have lye relaxed hair in the top that is thicker & fuller than the no-lye relaxed hair towards the ends so it takes longer for the roots to dry (which is the case for most folks anyway, I think:look: ).

The bolded: a helpful tip. I hadn't thought of doing those things to "steady" myself when detangling.

Update.

Last night I did not re-twist.
Instead, I conditioned with LaBella Placenta Conditioner - I really like that stuff, by the way- on my ends, split my hair in two very loose ponies and pin curled my ends (with only two pins). I went to sleep with a satin skull cap.

This morning, my hair was fluffy, defined and my ends were tightly curled.

Luvluvluved it!

Ladies, I'm going in for day three!!! I'll be back with an update.

I initially twisted in about 25-30 individuals Saturday night and used "Good Hair" by Jones and Rose- a shea butter/cocoa butter and oil moisturizer. Sun. morning I styled with my hands- I got good definition and great moisture. Every night this week, I spritz with my mix of distilled water, 1/2 oz of SAA, and peppermint oil and seal with jojoba oil , twist in 10-15 individuals then curl the ends with perm rods. I have been loosing very few shed hairs.

I think this is the answer I have been praying for for 3 1/2 years. I am happy. I hope to retain length.

Anyone else have success with growing out their hair with braidouts?

I have. I don't know if I ever responded to this thread. Not just braidouts, but twist outs as well.

Sent from my iPhone 4s using LHCF

This is my current strategy with twistouts :yep: Doing zero tension on my hair rn so no buns clips pins etc .

I let the hair dry in twists over 1-2 days unravel and thats it. I will do a very loose scrunchie at night for a pineapple under a scarf. In the morning apply butters to the ends and go. After a week, wash and repeat.

Me! My hair is now HL thanks to braid outs and twists

I usually braid into 10-12 braids after washing, wear braids in buns for a couple of days until they dry. Then wear the braid-outs in cute buns Monday-Thursday. Worn out on Friday

Re-braided every night in 3-4 sections

I was so excited to see that my hair idol Isis had started a thread! I thought, she's back!! LOL

When I first texlaxed my natural hair, I wore braidouts almost daily for about 2 years. My hair suffered so much! I figured it was too much manipulation, the rebraiding every night and taking it down every morning, and that my hair was too exposed to the elements. So I went back into PS mode to baby my hair back to health.

I have been looking for a way to wear my hair out more as it's getting longer again. I loved braidouts but I'm scared to try them again. I'm sure my mistake was a technique error. Reading through this thread, I wonder if it was because I didn't use roller on the ends. I always sealed my ends but maybe they also needed to be tucked via the rollers.

Also, pineappling left me with flat hair even though I used a loose, silk scrunchie. So that meant braiding and unbraiding daily. Can you ladies please offer any advice or technique assistance?
